HEAD COACH FILE
■ First-year coach Jon Newlee led Idaho State to the postseason four times
in the past five seasons and has been to the postseason in 13 of his last
  16 seasons as a Division I coach.

■ In his 24 years as a basketball coach, Newlee has been involved in 20 teams
  with winning records.

■ Teams coached by Newlee have finished in the top three of their respective
conferences in 14 of 18 seasons. His 2007 Idaho State team won the Big
Sky Tournament and regular-season titles, his 2006 team won the Big Sky
regular-season title and his 1989 Southwestern (Calif.) College team tied
for first in the Pacific Coast Conference.

■ Improvement has followed Newlee at each of his head coaching spots. From
his first to his second season at Southwestern College, the Jaguars improved
by nine wins. His second season at Idaho State saw an improvement of 14
wins from 6-20 to 20-9 and a WNIT bid, the first in the school’s history.

■ While it’s his first time as a head coach in the Western Athletic Conference,
Newlee is no stranger to WAC play. He spent three seasons in the WAC
with Southern Methodist from 1997-99, then three more with Hawai‘i from
2000-02 as an assistant. During that time, neither team finished worse than
third in the conference. SMU made a pair of NCAA trips and Hawai‘i made
three WNIT trips during that time.

HEAD COACH FILE
■ Pam DeCosta is in her second season at the helm of the Spartan program.
She came to San Jose State from Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla., where
she spent four seasons as the head coach.

■ DeCosta recorded her first win at San Jose State with a 59-55 victory over
Cal State Northridge on Nov. 30, 2007.

■ At Lynn, DeCosta took a program that had only five wins her first year and
produced double-digit wins each of the last three seasons. Her teams had a
100 percent graduation rate, and one student-athlete, Sarah Mahan, became
just the third player in school history to be named to the ESPN the Magazine
Academic All-District team as selected by CoSIDA.

■ Prior to Lynn, DeCosta was an assistant at Kansas for a total of eight years.
A talented recruiter, her 2003 class ranked 10th in the country, while her
2002 and 2001 classes both ranked 13th nationally. During her time there,
the Jayhawks won a Big Eight Championship and made five NCAA Tourna-
ment appearances, including advancing to the Sweet 16 in 1996.

■ Before her position at Kansas, DeCosta was the head varsity coach at Denver
East High School for the 1992-93 season and led the team to a 5A District
Championship and a final 5A state ranking of ninth.

■ DeCosta is one of six 2007 inductees into the Rocky Mountain Athletic
Conference Hall of Fame. She played at Mesa State College and was the
first women’s basketball player at the school to earn All-America honors.

■ DeCosta led the RMAC in scoring (17.8) and rebounding (11.4) during the
1984-85 season. She also led the league in rebounding for the 1985-86
season with 16.8 boards per game. After her collegiate career, she played
  professionally in Germany.

■ Following her 1991 graduation from Metropolitan State College (Denver,
Colo.), DeCosta began her collegiate coaching career at her alma mater as
an assistant coach. After two years of recruiting the state’s top players, the
team achieved its best season in school history.
