T he Bligh Government’s plans to close
the Royal Children’s Hospital and move
services to the southside will leave Dickson
residents without children’s accident and emergency
services and specialist paediatric medical services
at the Herston site. It will even mean that babies
born with certain medical conditions at the
Royal Women’s Hospital, will be separated from
their mothers and transported to the new site
by ambulance. The hospital school and family
accommodation, already supporting patients at the
Royal Children’s Hospital, will not fit in the smaller
hospital site in South Brisbane.
The Royal Children’s Hospital is a world class medical
research facility and the Royal Brisbane Hospital
site is the biggest training hospital for doctors,
nurses and other child health professionals.
I have three young children and like many northside
families we have done the dash to the Royal Children’s
Hospital in the early hours. Fortunately in our
case, it has been nothing more serious than croup,
but nonetheless having a sick child is a stressful
time and as a parent you want to see a doctor as
quickly as possible.

put extra funds towards individual school projects.

QCWa Still going Strong in diCkSon
The Queensland Country Women Association (QCWA) is a voluntary organisation whose role is to improve
education, health and welfare to enrich the lives of women and children and hence the family. The Dickson
electorate alone has five QCWA branches. The QCWA hold trade tables at local shopping centres where
handicrafts made by members are sold to the public. Donations to various groups are made in many
forms, such as blankets and jumpers to indigenous communities, hospitals in Ethiopia, women’s refuges and
cancer wards just to name a few. If you are interested in becoming a member contact the state office on
