Individual Research Fellowship Award Awards w i l l b e made t o i n d i v i d u a l a p p l i c a n t s f o r s p e c i f i e d t r a i n i n g p r o p o s a l s and s e l e c t e d as a r e s u l t of a n a t i o n a l c o m p e t i t i o n f o r r e s e a r c h t r a i n i n g i n s p e c i f i e d h e a l t h and h e a l t h - r e l a t e d areas. P r i o r t o f o r m a l a p p l i c a t i o n , an a p p l i c a n t must a r r a n g e f o r a c c e p t a n c e a t a s p o n s o r i n g i n s t i t u t i o n by a sponsor who w i l l s u p e r v i s e h i s t r a i n i n g . The major emphasis of t h e a p p l i ­ c a t i o n must b e t h e t r a i n i n g e x p e r i e n c e and t h e broadening of s c i e n t i f i c competence t o be gained. F e l l o w s h i p s , i n t h i s program, are n o t awarded f o r s t u d y l e a d i n g t o t h e M.D., o r o t h e r p r o f e s s i o n a l degrees. D.D.S., D.V.M., Under e x c e p t i o n a l circumstances , and a f t e r a d e q u a t e j u s t i f i c a t i o n t h a t such s t u d y i s n o t a v a i l a b l e a t a n y domestic i n s t i t u t i o n , an i n d i v i d u a l may r e q u e s t s u p p o r t f o r s t u d y abroad. I n s t i t u t i o n a l Research Fellowship Award The g r a n t w i l l be made t o an i n s t i t u t i o n w i t h an approved p r e c e p t o r f o r a number of r e s e a r c h t r a i n i n g f e l l o w s h i p s i n a l i m i t e d number of s p e c i f i e d s h o r t a g e a r e a s . Fellows w i l l b e s e l e c t e d by t h e p r e c e p t o r , based on s p e c i f i e d e l i g i b i l i t y and o t h e r c r i t e r i a (citizenship, etc.). The purpose of t h e I n s t i t u t i o n a l Research Fellowship Award i s t o e n a b l e n o n p r o f i t i n s t i t u t i o n s t o develop r e s e a r c h t r a i n i n g o p p o r t u n i t i e s f o r i n d i v i d u a l s i n t e r e s t e d i n c a r e e r s i n p a r t i c u l a r s p e c i f i e d areas of s h o r t a g e i n h e a l t h s c i e n c e s and r e l a t e d f i e l d s . A a p p l i c a t i o n may b e s u b m i t t e d by a domestic n p r i v a t e o r p u b l i c n o n p r o f i t i n s t i t u t i o n o r a Government i n s t i t u t i o n . The i n s t i t u t i o n w i l l b e p r o v i d e d , upon a p p l i c a t i o n , w i t h an allowance of up t o $3,000 t o h e l p d e f r a y t h e c o s t of t r a i n i n g f e l l o w s ( s u p p l i e s and equipment, and i n l i e u of a l l t u i t i o n , f e e s , and d e p o s i t s [ l a b o r a t o r y , h e a l t h , etc.] charged o t h e r s t u d e n t s o r similar academic s t a t u s , except f e e s and d e p o s i t s which are r e f u n d a b l e i n whole o r i n p a r t to the student ) I n s t i t u t i o n a l Research Fellowship Award Allowances and I n d i r e c t Costs The s t i p e n d s f o r f e l l o w s on i n s t i t u t i o n a l awards w i l l be t h e same as f o r i n d i v i d u d f e l l o w s ; however , i n s t i t u t i o n s r e c e i v i n g I n s t i t u t i o n a l Research Fellowship Awards w i l l be provided w i t h an i n s t i t u t i o n a l allowance of up t o $1,000 p e r y e a r f o r each f e l l o w . In a d d i t i o n , i n s t i t u t i o n s may r e q u e s t up t o 25 p e r c e n t of t h e t o t a l award f o r r e l a t e d c o s t s ( s a l a r i e s , equipment, e t c . ) , and an overhead c o s t allowance of a c t u a l c o s t s o r 8 p e r c e n t of t o t a l a l l o w a b l e d i r e c t c o s t s , whichever i s less.
