Transmit calculated 5-minute temperature and precipitation.

Install new data logger subroutines that produce calculated 5-minute temperature and precipitation observations for the one hour period prior to
transmission, AKA “the rolling 12”, and add them to the normal transmission data stream.

10. STATEMENT OF REQUIREMENT, PROBLEM, OR DEFICIENCY

The current transmission strategy is hourly, and only raw data are transmitted. Real time users of USCRN data make ad hoc decisions regarding
interpretation of the raw data, and often receive the data well after the hour in question has ended.

11. KNOWN OR PROPOSED SOLUTION

The production of calculated temperature and precipitation values in the data logger will allow the National Weather Service and other groups
accessing the GOES transmitted data in raw form to have values calculated based on USCRN program algorithms. In addition, the values will be
calculated for the latest 12 five-minute observation periods, up to five minutes before transmission, instead of stopping at the end of the previous hour as
is current practice. The additional fields are added to the end of the normal three-hour data stream. This will improve the consistency and quality of the
observations being used in real time and reduce latency for real time data users compared to the current system.

The algorithms for these calculations are appended to this document, entitled “CRN-CCR-37 Site 5-minute T and P Calculations”.

Temperature
Copy the last 5-minute average temperature for each sensor, T1, T2, T3

If the average Fan speed for associated T sensor is less than 90, set T= -9999

Logic is designed to report the median T of T1, T2, T3

If T1>=T2 and T2 > T3 Then T=T2
If T1>=T3 and T3 > T2 Then T=T3
If T3>=T1 and T1 > T2 Then T=T1
If T3 >=T2 and T2 > T1 Then T=T2
If T2 >=T3 and T3 > T1 Then T=T3
If T2 >=T1 and T1 > T3 Then T=T1

If more than one fan is less than 90, the median will report as –9999

Precipitation
Calculate the average depth of the three sensors Depth = (mm1 + mm2 + mm3)/3

For the first pass in the program set LastLevel = Depth

At the end of each 5 minute period:

Rain = Depth – Lastlevel

If Rain < 0 Then Rain = 0 and Lastlevel = Depth

If Rain < .25 Then Precip = 0

If Rain > .25 Then Precip = Rain and Lastlevel = Depth

If mm1 < -50 Then Precip = -999
If mm2 < -50 Then Precip = -999
If mm3 < -50 Then Precip = -999

If Wetness Sensor 1 > 500 Then Precip = 0

If the Door is open in 5 minute period then Precip = 0

Multiply T and Precip by 100 to scale for binary transmission
