News Release

Get on your bike in Swindon for Bike Week

Free cycling events taking place in Swindon for Bike Week (14th – 22nd June) will
provide opportunities for everyone from total novices to passionate cyclists to get
on their bikes.
Jane Leaman, Swindon's Joint Director of Public Health, said: "Cycling is not only
fun and inexpensive, it is also an excellent way of keeping healthy. Indeed, it has
been proven that regular cyclists enjoy a fitness level equal to that of a person
ten years younger".

Bike Week aims to get bums on saddles in Swindon in order to demonstrate the
social, health, and environmental benefits, not to mention the convenience of
cycling.

Tamina Oliver, CTC‟s Cycle Champions Officer in Swindon is coordinating
activities for everyone, whatever their cycling experience and ability. Events
range from a cycling skills session for complete beginners by a qualified
Bikeability instructor to a lengthy 75-mile ride by a group of employees from
Arval, a local company in Swindon.

There are also many opportunities for those who can ride confidently yet who do
not fancy such a long route. These include a leisurely 17 mile loop around
Swindon, a scenic 16 mile round trip to see the wind turbines at Westmill Farm
and a gentle shorter ride with local CTC members in Lydiard Park, one of the
Great Western Community Forest‟s most picturesque sites.

Another option is Cycling England‟s Midsummer Bike Night in Castle Combe. It is
a mini cycling festival with the aim of getting everyone to cycle a combined total
of 10,000 miles in just three hours.

All group rides will be relaxed and enjoyable and will go at the pace of the
slowest, so please don‟t worry about being left behind. Moreover, experienced
ride leaders and mechanics will also be available so anyone who joins in will be
in safe hands.
For more information, photos or an interview contact CTC’s Cycle
Champions Officer in Swindon Tamina Oliver on 07717696672 or CTC’s
Media Officer Victoria Hazael on 01483 238 315 or 07786320713.

Notes to editors

 CTC is the national cyclists' organisation, with 70,000 members and affiliates in
250 clubs across the UK. We are the oldest and largest cycling body in the UK,
established in 1878. We provide a comprehensive range of services, advice,
events, and protection for our members and work to promote cycling by raising
public and political awareness of its health, social and environmental benefits.
       For more information see www.ctc.org.uk.

 CTC‟s Cycle Champions programme will improve the health, transport and
environment prospects for individuals and communities across England who
have historically not benefited from cycling. In partnership with local
organisations, our officers will work with volunteers to bring CTC‟s knowledge
and expertise to inspire, train and support 34,000 new cyclists who are currently
inactive or at risk of inactivity.

 CTC‟s Cycle Champions is part of a portfolio of projects being delivered by a
consortium of leading walking, cycling and health organizations and is funded
through the Big Lottery Fund‟s Wellbeing Programme. The consortium is lead by
Sustrans and includes CTC, Cycling England, British Cycling, Living Streets,
London Cycling Campaign, the National Heart Forum, the National Obesity
Forum, the Ramblers‟ Association, Campaign for Better Transport and Walk 21.
It is delivering projects that will enable 2 million people to become more
physically active by walking or cycling as part of their daily lives by 2012.

 The Swindon Cycle Champions project is a partnership between CTC Charitable
Trust, the Great Western Community Forest (GWCF), the Strategic Transport
Group of Swindon Borough Council and Active Swindon. The Community Cycling
Development Officer is hosted by GWCF.

 With Swindon at its centre, the GWCF is an exciting partnership initiative
between a wide range of local and regional organisations from the public, private
and voluntary sectors. GWCF is creating high-quality environments for local
people by diversifying land-use, revitalising derelict landscapes, enhancing
biodiversity and providing new opportunities for leisure, recreation, cultural
activity, education, healthy living and social and economic development. GWCF
plays a crucial role in contributing to sustainable development in Swindon and
the beautiful surrounding countryside. The key roles cycling can play in
sustainable development are clearly recognised within the vision for the GWCF:
helping people to explore and enjoy their local environment, offering an attractive
alternative to motorised travel, improving health and well-being and
        strengthening the local economy.
