Placements on organic farms and gardens (April 2009) This is a list of organic farms and holdings willing to offer work experience to students and those interested in learning organic production skills. Only members of IOFGA (Irish Organic Farmers and Growers Association Ltd) who have full organic status or are in conversion to organic production are included on the list. Arrangements should be made directly with the farmer or grower. Applicants should write stating their age, sex, qualifications, and prior experience (if any). They should state the areas in which they seek experience and the length of stay preferred. Please note that the amount of instruction a farmer or grower can give will be in proportion to their own experience of commercial organic production – which is listed in each case. What is offered is in the first instance work experience – that is to say varied experience of the normal work on the holding according to the season. Students seeking classroom instruction should obtain this elsewhere prior to seeking work experience. All holdings provide food and accommodation for the student. The degree to which a host will be offering an opportunity to live as part of the family may vary considerably. Some farmers or growers might require an interview or a trial period. Some holdings may offer 'pocket money’. LEO MARTIN and NUALA KEANE BALLYDAVID, BANSHA, CO TIPPERARY. TEL: 062 54029 48 acre in conversion farm. Lots of Dairy Goats and a few suckler cows. Keen interest in vegetables more important than prior knowledge. PETER BINDER GARRYDUFF, SOUTH LODGE, CARRICK-ON-SUIR, CO. TIPPERARY. TEL: 051 647207 I am living with my young son in this (obviously organic) place having grown vegetables, potatoes, and apples for the past 23 years. There is no stock at the moment apart from two donkeys - retired due to very local and late introduction of internal combustion engine. The cats left when the dog strayed in. Plenty of involuntary stock like rabbits and crows though. We are located 7 miles from Carrick at the foot of Slievenamon, “the mountain”. 13 miles from Clonmel and approx 20 miles to either Kilkenny or Waterford. Being the last house on a very rarely used road makes for undisturbed walking with close-by access to what is termed “woodlands” in Ireland. But besides strolls in the countryside the most common activities I really seek interested and focused help with like weeding, thinning, and harvesting in always new and exciting recurring order, and of course cooking and washing up are ideally shared between everyone. Alongside determined work input there is always time to relax which I can never quite manage to achieve working on my own. Sleeping accommodation is a caravan (except in winter) while living space in the house is shared and what food is prepared and eaten here is most of the time 100% organic. With food and board goes a negotiable weekly amount of pocket money. Minimum placement should be a month, ideally longer. With a longer stay in mind it might be helpful to meet beforehand but isn’t always practical due to distance. NOW – if all this sparks some interest I will be very glad to hear from you, BUT you will have to phone or write – I have only just heard of this utopian thing called the internet….. We grow salad crops, culinary herbs, flowers, fruit, and vegetables that are sold to restaurants in Cork and Limerick. We practise seed saving, food preservation, and jam making. The entire estate comprises two hundred acres with many old trees and new native woodlands that are fantastic for walking and exploring. There is also a wide array of wild and domestic animals including deer and poultry. The business operates from March to November but there can be work all year round if people have skills such as tree pruning, wood-cutting, and wall building/restoration. Accommodation is either in the eco-cabin on site in the garden or in my cottage depending on the time of year. Work can include seed propagation, bed preparation, weeding, watering, bed management, harvesting, pruning, wall renovation, poultry management, and soil management.
