Dear Mr Ron Yuryevich, Mayor City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder We would like to request that Council consider supporting Samantha Fielder to attend the Bright Green Youth Conference to be held in Sonderborg, Denmark from 8th August-13th August 2009. Samantha is a Youth Councillor and is actively involved in local environmental issues. Samantha has continued her involvement in a youth group called Millennium Kids who work with students on a range of environmental issues through fun and ongoing assistance. Samantha has now been recognised for her commitment to this group by being chosen to be one of four representatives at the Bright Green Youth Conference in Sonderborg, Denmark in August this year. This conference is the youth equivalent to the Climate Change Conference to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark in December 2009. The exciting aspect for the youth conference is that a range of international scientists will be working with the youth to develop ideas for real and practical solutions for climate change that will then be presented at Copenhagen. Prior to the conference, Samantha will be facilitating a workshop for 50 local youth in years 510with Millennium Kids Program Diretor Catrina-Luz Aniere at the Goldfields Camp School. The workshop is titled The Big Switch Experiment and is aimed at getting local youth to run programs in their school and community to encourage people to switch off unused electrical items and become more energy aware. Samantha has been extremely lucky to be chosen and is the only regional youth chosen to attend this conference. Unfortunately, while the costs of the conference will be covered by Millennium Kids, Samantha needs to seek support from the community to raise approximately $2 000 to cover her travel costs from Perth to Sonderborg. If the Council would be able to assist in any portion of funding up to $2 000, we would greatly appreciate your assistance. Samantha has been committed to the local Kalgoorlie-Boulder community through her involvement in the Youth Council, Junior Landcare, KBULG and Millennium Kids over a range of years and is also involved in a range of sporting groups.

As you will read in the letter of invitation to Samantha, the City of South Perth have generously funded 3 airfares of $2 000 for two students and one adult escort to attend the conference. On return, Samantha is more than willing to share her knowledge and experience with the Council and community as requested. As Samantha departs Kalgoorlie on the 3rd August, the matter of funding is quite urgent and we look forward to a reply to this request at your earliest convenience.
