as we share, we are changing the dynamics for relationships.

connected groups that also include people who share our interests.

As we share interesting content, we basically share a bit of ourselves, serving as an

Netflix now has more
subscribers than any U.S.
cable or satellite provider, and
it's the only one really
growing.

This isn't to say that the cable
companies should
immediately be freaking out
about Netflix -- it's still more of
a complementary service to
cable than a replacement.

But that could change,
especially as Netflix continues
to grow, and can start writing
bigger checks to content
companies -- the sorts of
checks that they could only
get from the Comcasts of the
world just a few years ago.

The era of analysis paralysis is officially over.

Instead of just listening, companies can now study

YouTube users are now uploading 48 hours of video a
minute. That’s up 37 percent in the last six months, and
100 percent in the last year. YouTube says the increase
comes in part because it’s easier than ever to upload
stuff, and in part because YouTube has started
embracing lengthy live streaming sessions.

YouTube users are now watching more than 3 billion
videos a day. That’s up 50 percent from the last year,
which is also a huge leap, though the growth rate has
declined a bit: Last year, views doubled from a billion a
day to two billion in six months.

Once upon a time, search engine optimization (SEO) was the The Five Rules of SMO:
number one tool for optimizing your visibility and business on
the Internet. 1. Create shareable content
Now it’s all about ―social media optimization‖ (SMO). 2. Make sharing easy
Brands know they have to be social in order to be ―loved,‖ and 3. Reward engagement

The irony is that a social media strategy is much simpler to
implement than you might think. 5. Encourage the mashup

I’ve learned that people will forget what
you said, people will forget what you Sharing is nothing new.
did, but people will never forget how
you made them feel. We imagined the Internet would change everything, even our

Consumers … participate because they want to connect with a brand or its information. Appointment TV viewing and
conversation, group advertising critique, and social dressing rooms all have one thing in common. They attract people
by connecting them to each other.

The smartest social media marketers recognize that it’s the gift of community – whether built around conversation, data
or utility – that serves them best in the social space. Doling out coupons still works. And disguising a sales pitch as
social engagement may be tolerated, but they won’t be enough over the long term.
