Approved List of Events and Activities
For holders of the QFA designation participating in CPD Programme

                                                 August 2006

Important Notes – Please Read Carefully

1. The Approved Activity List is intended as a guideline only – please do not rely on it as your only
source of finding CPD activities. Our hope is that it will firstly give an indication as to the type of activities
that can earn formal CPD credit, and also that it might prompt people to attend relevant events that they
may not previously have been aware of. It is absolutely up to the individual to choose which, if indeed any,
of the activities listed will be of assistance to them, and the QFA Board is in no way suggesting that QFAs
must participate in any of them.

2. Events and in-house training programmes being run by Life Offices and other institutions can be approved
for CPD credit, but they will never appear on this list for reasons of confidentiality. We are approving such
activities all the time, so if you are attending something of that nature and are unsure as to whether or not it
will count, please feel free to contact us by phone or e-mail, or fax us a completed Activity Enquiry Form
   (enclosed).

3. This booklet includes activities run by bodies and/or associations that have taken place since the beginning
of the year. We have left these events on our list to remind members of all events that have been approved
for formal CPD credit (as you may have attended without realising that CPD credit was available).

4. Please contact the association or body running the event rather than the QFA Board for more
information about individual activities. Contact details are given under each heading.

5. Where possible, we have been in touch with the bodies and associations listed and have requested updated
lists of events for 2006. Where this information is not yet available, it will be included on this list at a later
   date.

6. Some events and activities are only open to members of the body or association running the event. Where
applicable, this is indicated. Where not indicated, the events are open to all.

7. CPD hours can only be claimed for one attendance at an event. Where the same event is run in several
venues around the country, you can obviously only claim the formal CPD hours for attendance at one
   venue.

New CPD Cycle - Help Sheet
Please read thoroughly before phoning The QFA Board (the most frequently asked questions are answered below)

Main Requirements for New Cycle:
Overall (1st Jan 2004 – 31st Dec 2006): 60 hours to be completed of which at least 40 must be formal CPD

Minimum Annual Requirement: 15 hours of which at least 10 must be formal. However, most people should be working
towards completing an average of 20 hours per year of which about 14 should be formal. Note that if you only complete the
minimum annual requirement in each year you will not meet your overall three-year requirement of 60 hours CPD and will
therefore fail to comply with the programme requirements (and ultimately lose your QFA designation)

Pro-Rata Adjustments may be obtained if you are taking a career break / parental leave / extended leave of absence due
to prolonged illness. Please apply to The QFA Board in writing for such adjustments.

                                              Definitions: Formal vs Informal

 Very simply defined, Formal CPD is ‘active’ participation in something (e.g. attendance at seminar/workshop/in-house
    training programme etc).

 Formal CPD does not necessarily mean attendance at external seminars. If you participate in in-house training, or
in the case of intermediaries, if Life Office representatives call to you in order to train you on a new product or generic
product-type, this could earn credit (provided the training session is formal in nature and not simply an informal ‘flick
through the new brochure over a coffee’)

 Informal is general reading and research (e.g. relevant articles from Irish Broker, The Professional, business pages of
    daily/Sunday newspapers etc).

 In order to calculate informal hours: take an honest estimate of the amount of time you spend reading relevant
material on a weekly/monthly basis and multiply it out over the period in question. It may be a lot (in some cases
hundreds of hours per year) or not very much, depending on your routine and job requirements.

 There is no limit on the amount of informal hours you may claim each year, but you must meet at least your
minimum formal requirement and total annual requirement.

Main Criteria for Awarding Credit:

The QFA Board has deemed that activities that are directly relevant to giving financial advice to consumers can count for
CPD credit (i.e. those of a technical nature, regarding taxation, pensions, investments and so on, or concerning legislation
and/or regulation). In other words information or knowledge an adviser really should have before advising a client, or
information that is absolutely necessary in order to conduct business (e.g. Euro / Central Bank Compliance)

 The one exception to the formal/informal definitions is the QFA Annual Update document (last issue circulated in July
2006), as reading of this document actually earns four hours formal CPD.

 Whether Formal or Informal, for anything to count for CPD credit it must conform to the above main criteria.

 In terms of hours, we generally award one hour per hour of activity (excluding any breaks or social activity) up to a
maximum of four hours for any one event, activity or topic.

Some examples of approved activities (not exhaustive):

 Compliance training
 PRSA seminars
 Investment seminars
 Product training (formal training session, as opposed to a more social ‘product launch’ situation)
 Training in computerised fact-find systems
 Relevant examinations run by Professional bodies
 Modules successfully completed on the myCPD website

Some examples of what would not earn credit (not exhaustive):

 General software/application training (e.g. Microsoft Excel, Access etc)
 Internet training
 Sales (techniques) training
 ‘Motivational’ seminars
 Study or exam preparation. Credit is awarded on successful completion of relevant examinations.
                                     Seminars / Workshops
