In 1776, many believed that the English King had heaped abuses on
the people of the new world. And they decided to do something about it.
Thus was born the Declaration of Independence, signed July 4, 1776,
and within it were listed a series of complaints the Founding Fathers
      had against the King.
While people in every country and in every time have had complaints
against their governments, the Founding Fathers of the United States
had the singular opportunity to remake their world exactly as they
      wanted it.
First they enumerated the abuses. Then they did something that was
simply unique. They declared their independence from the king and set
      about remaking their world.
The Declaration of Independence was the framework for the
Constitution of the United States, the first document of its kind, the
oldest such document still in use, and a document that has been used as
the basis for constitutions in dozens of countries throughout the world.
For each abuse the Founding Fathers accused the King of in the
Declaration, they remedied in the Constitution. Indeed, the Founding
Fathers so completely changed the way government operates, that
modern Americans are barely aware of the kind of problems the
      colonials had.

Seniors are especially at risk from heat related health problems such as heatstroke and heat exhaustion.
"Heat can be miserable for all ages, but potentially dangerous for older persons," according to Elinor
Ginzler, AARP Director for Livable Communities.
Here are 10 tips for dealing with any heat wave:
   1. Stay indoors during the hottest times of the day.
   2. Close your shades to keep out the sunshine.
   3. If you do not have air conditioning, stay on the lower-level in your home—heat rises.
   4. Check with your local agency for cool places you can go such as libraries and public buildings, or a
      mall with air conditioning.
   5. Wear light-weight, loose fitting clothing and protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat,
      sunglasses or use an umbrella.
   6. Drink plenty of water even if you are not thirsty. This helps keep your body cool.
   7. Avoid alcohol or caffeinated beverages.
   8. If you have a chronic medical condition, talk with your doctor about additional precautions you
should take to prevent heat related illness. Some conditions and medications may place you at
      higher risk.
   9. Always carry water with you when exercising or spending time outdoors.
   10. Know your limits. Sit down and rest in a cool place if you are feeling nausea's, fatigued or dizzy.

Can you guess who this month’s spotlight is?

She was born on December 6, 1926 to the parents of Carl & Martha Alred. She wasn’t born in
a hospital, she was born at home. She lived in Manteno, Illinois until she was two, when her
family moved to Chicago. Her mother worked as a housekeeper on the North Side. She
stated that was were “all the rich people lived.” She was one of five children. One of the
things she remembers was when the depression hit. The times were hard. She remembers
standing in the soup line with her dad. Her grandpa had a pig farm and sometimes would
send them a slab of bacon. They would make a soup called “Hard Time Supper”. She also
remembers making her own toys and Christmas ornaments. She would make them out of the
comic stripes. When she was 12 years old she got her first job babysitting on the North Side.
She had two more jobs by the time she was a senior in High School. This is were she met her
future husband. He was a third generation Californian. After a graduating, he took her to meet
his parents, They used to tease her and tell her she was a foreigner because she wasn’t from
California. The two married when she was eighteen. He went into the military and she went to
work for the Dodger Plant making B-29 engines. When the war was over they moved to San
Francisco,California. He started working for United Air Lines and she stayed at home with the
children. In 1952 they moved their family to San Jose. She became a very active member of
her community. She was on the PTA and a Brownie Leader. She and her husband worked on
the election board. They also formed a Democrat Club. This was a very fun time of her life.
They would have pot luck dinners and dance the bunny hop and the conga line. This wonder-
ful woman has 3 children, 6 grand children, and 12 great grand children.

If you can guess who she is?

This past year, the residents of Carlton Plaza of Sacramento had
the wonderful opportunity to give back to their community through
intergenerational activities. They joined forces with Mrs. Staab’s
Stars Kindergarten Class at Del Paso Manor, a local elementary
school, and oh, what fun they had! In December 2009, The Staab
Stars Class came to Carlton Plaza to make Ginger Bread Houses.
They supplied the excited builders and we supplied the houses and
the supervision! Even Channel 10 came and aired us on TV. In
April, 2010, we were visited by The Staab Stars again. The kids
sang songs and also performed the songs in sign language at the
same time. They entertained our residents and again delighted our
resident’s hearts! This past month, the Carlton Readers Club
visited The Staab Stars Class and read a few books to them. Cleo
brought props while Jack sang his way through his story and Jill
helped us gift her story book to each and every child in the class.

When I came across this paraphrased quote, I could not pass it up since anything having
to do with water attracts me. I’ve read it over several times and have wondered how each of you would
interpret the quote. Perhaps you’d like to take some time to ponder it before reading on, and/or discuss it at
                 the dinner table tonight.

What this quote means to me is that if we are to become or stay empowered people, we must not put off for
tomorrow what we would love to be doing today. The moments can never be relived. How often have we
been on a road trip, for instance, and think about stopping to see someone or something, but shove the
thought aside, telling ourselves that we will do it next time. (But never do.) Or perhaps when shopping we
see something we’d like to have, but convince ourselves that we can buy it later. Of course, it is likely that
we will never again see that exact item.

In our everyday lives, most of us self-talk. How often do we talk ourselves right out doing things we “ought”
to be doing or want to be doing. It is so easy to convince ourselves to take the easy road, the one everyone
else travels, instead of the ones less traveled. “Oh, it is too cold to take a walk today. I’ll do it in the
morning.” Or, “I just don’t feel up to exercising right now.” Or, “Go ahead, eat that piece of cake. You can
watch your diet tomorrow.” Or, perhaps we have put off forgiving someone for some offense that occurred
so long ago we can’t remember when or what. Or we’ve been meaning to tell those who are dear to us that
Flowing Waters

we love them, but just haven’t gotten around to it yet. And the river flows by taking with it the missed
                 opportunities of our lives.

As I was writing, the following email arrived; it is titled THE FOUR AGREEMENTS by Don M. Ruiz,
author of many spiritual growth books. Living by these agreements can help us to take advantage of the fresh
flowing water with the first step into the river.

                                                - Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak
against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love

                                                   - Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection
of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t
be the victim of needless suffering.

Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want.
Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just
this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

                                      - Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you
are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-
                 judgment, self-abuse and regret.

Trying our best to live up to these four agreements will empower us every day and we will have no need to
even try to step into the same water twice. We can watch the waters flow without regret or sour hearts.
                 Blessings to all.

“We cannot step twice into the same water” – we cannot recapture time – a moment can never be relived.

                                                                                            Printed 100% Recycled Paper
