Annual Report of the HKUEAA Ltd. Session 2007-2008 I. President’s Message Dear HKUEAA Members, It is the AGM time again. This year, we have had a wonderful year with alumni and students. Let me just mention a few key things here: First of all, we have revamped our HKUEAA website. It is quite cool and we have incorporated a more energetic and "green" look to go with the times! If you have not had a chance to check this out, I do recommend it. You can see the latest events and photos of our activities. During the New Year Fantasy Ball, I mentioned a closer tie with the Engineering Faculty and University. I don't know if you are aware, our Association has donated HK$1 million to the University to set up a loan fund for needy engineering students. Over the last two years, this fund has benefited 30 plus students. Our two vice-presidents, Ir Carmen Au and Mr Clement Tse, have been nominated as representatives in the HKUEAA loan fund selection committee. We also decided to establish a scholarship to encourage our students to become future leaders in our community. With your support, I hope we can do more for the University, the students and our Association. Graduate Mentor Scheme is an important activity in HKUEAA. In addition to three career talks, we had a very successful GMS inauguration in March 2008 and had the pleasure of Vice Chancellor, Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, and Dean of Engineering, Prof W.C. Chew, attending. I really would encourage more alumni to become mentors. This is a great personal experience. On sustainability activities, we organized a trip to Mainland China in May 2008 and visited Conghua Pumped Storage Power Plant, Dayawan Petrochemical Industrial Park and Dapeng LNG Terminal. This was a great success in learning how different disciplines of engineering work together in major projects and execute them in a sustainable manner. Lastly, I look forward to seeing you all at the AGM and your continued support of HKUEAA Dr Francis Lung President H.K.U. Engineering Alumni Association Session 2007-2008. Page 1 II. The objective of these career talks was to share speakers’ views and ours with engineering students. These also helped students to look more on personal interest, Page 5 strengths and long-term inspirations, instead of just seeking the most hit and thought-to-be good jobs. In a harmonious atmosphere, students enthusiastically asked questions, especially on the future advancement of their interested careers. The speakers conveyed an important mindset to students that a basic issue of long-term career goal should be emphasized more, rather than what the organizations they could enter. All the three Career Talks were well received by the students who actively asked questions about the future development of the industries in which they were interested, and details of interview skills. It was appreciated that the speakers’ sharing was very useful to the students, especially they would soon face a very keen and tough competition as well as personal career determination. The theme and visions of the Career Talks were successfully brought out. f. During the trip, all participants understood more about the importance of SD in the engineering industry. g. Website Revamp Page 6 Description: HKUEAA redesigned the official website which was launched in January 2008. With a new look, it is better suited for bringing students, alumni and the university together. The new website has a comfortable greenish background to promote the HKUEAA’s study of “Sustainable Development”. We have introduced several new features.
