MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION
The medium of instruction at Potchefstroom Academy is Afrikaans and English. Study material, exams and
tests are available in English.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Potchefstroom Academy (PTY) Ltd has a policy and procedure for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

The basic objective underlying Recognition of Prior Learning is that it attempts, especially in adults, to ac-
knowledge all learning, irrespective of how it was achieved, through an open and transparent approach to
assessment.
Forms to apply for RPL can be obtained from the Academy.

ASSESSMENT, ACADEMIC CREDIT ACCUMULATION, PROGRESSION AND QUALIFICATION
The learner obtains a qualification after being assessed that he/she has met all the criteria and outcomes,
sufficient class attendance, all subjects passed and all experiential hours completed.

DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH THERAPY
• Diploma in Therapeutic Aromatherapy (NQF level 5) - 2 years full time
• Diploma in Therapeutic Massage (NQF level 5) - 2 years full time
• Diploma in Therapeutic Reflexology (NQF level 5) - 2 years full time
  All fully accredited – HEQC, Registered with the DHET.

These qualifications focus on improving the quality of life by creating wellness through the principles of na-
ture’s remedies and the body’s natural defenses.
A career in Health Therapy is monitored by legislation and the therapist treats patients in a practice setup.
Therapeutic treatments relax the body and activates the healing process.

THERAPEUTIC AROMATHERAPY
The secret of aromatherapy lies in the skill of the therapist to master both the art and science of creating a
synergistic blend of essential oils. It involves treatment of the face and body with essential oils.

Aromatherapy science is based on the chemical constituents of essential oils and its effects on all the senses
of the patient. Essential oils are volatile oils extracted from plant material such as leaves, flowers, seeds, tree
bark, etc. by using different methods of extraction. Each essential oil consists of its own unique combinations
of chemical constituents. These chemical constituents contribute to the therapeutic properties of essential oils
for e.g. Chamazulene found in German chamomile is responsible for the oil’s anti-inflammatory property. This
anti-inflammatory property is used to counteract the inflammatory response in tissue.

therapeutic properties necessary to treat the physiological or psychological condition and the related symp-
toms of the client.

An Aromatherapist loves the challenge in creating a unique blend for each individual patient. A therapist must
be friendly, hardworking and empathetic. Therapists are passionate about helping and treating sick people,
for their work environment includes private practices, hospitals and care institutions.

Subjects include: Anatomy, Nutrition, Patho-physiology and Pharmacology, Occupational Health and Safe-
ty, Therapeutic Aromatherapy, Business Practice and Entrepreneurship

OBJECTIVES OF THE SUBJECTS
Anatomy and Physiology: the student learns about the anatomical structure of the body and the physiologi-
cal functions of the various systems in the body.

Patho-physiology and Pharmacology: the study of diseases that manifest in the body, how they change and
influence our bodily functions and activities.

Nutrition and Dietary Supplements: this subject consists of daily nutritional requirements and how to supple-
ment these requirements with vitamins, minerals, herbs and spices.

Business Practice and Entrepreneurship, Computer Practice, Occupational Health and Safety and Leg-
islation: the student learns how to manage a business, the flow of protocol and ensure a safe working en-
vironment.

Aromatherapy (Practical and Theory): the student gains working knowledge of essential oils e.g. lavender,
tea tree, rose, rosemary and basil. They learn about the essential oils’ therapeutic uses and properties, meth-
ods of extraction, how the oils are absorbed by the body and how to apply them for maximum result.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
National Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification.
Recommended subjects include Life Sciences and Physical Sciences. Admission is determined by means of a
personal interview.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Own Business or Practice, Hospitals, Medical Clinics, Stress Clinics, Semi-medical services at Sport Clubs and
Retirement Villages.

After successful completion of the qualification, the therapists must register with the Allied Health Professions
Council of South Africa, to enable them to work as registered therapists in South Africa.

EXPERIENTIAL HOURS
Second Year
240 hours in total.
Case studies must consist of: 10 treatments per patient. 40 hours are community services; thus, the student
must treat 20 patients.
100 hours are compulsory at the Jolie Femme Holistic T    raining Facility.
100 hours at a health clinic, hospital or practice under supervision of a qualified therapist.
