A N N O U N C E M E N T
1. The Special Visual Sciences Research Awards Program, recently established by the National Eye Institute, i s designed t o encourage young investigators to remain active i n eye research d u r i n g the formative stage of t h e i r career. Under this program, awards will be made on a competitive basis t o new investigators not holding other research support. To be eligible, candidates must have received a doctoral degree or have completed research or residency training no more than four years prior t o the date NH receives a completed application. I

Awards will be made f o r a nonrenewable period of up t o three years, i n amounts n o t t o exceed $7,500 per year t o support research projects i n the clinical and basic sciences related t o eye diseases and disorders of the visual system.

3. The same NIH policies, rules, and regulations which apply to the regular research grants program w i 11 govern the Speci a1 V sua1 Sciences Research Awards. The standard i research grant application k i t should be used by those who wish t o be considered f o r this special g r a n t . The i n i t i a l merit review will be conducted by the appropriate NIH Division of Research Grants study section, and the second review will be conĀ ducted by the National Advisory Eye Council.

2. Grantees desiring t o appeal an adverse decision by the National Institutes of Health may do s o by requesting a review i n w r i t i n g . The request f o r review must be postmarked no l a t e r t h a n 30 days a f t e r the postmarked date of the adverse decision and be addressed t o the Executive Secretary, Grant Appeals Board, 330 Independence Avenue, SW, Washington, D.C. 20201. The request f o r review must clearly identify the question(s) in dispute and contain a full statement of the grantee's position w i t h respect t o such question(s) and the pertinent facts and reasons i n support of the appeal.
