1. The National Heart and Lung I n s t i t u t e announces i t s intent t o establish a limited number of National Research and Demonstration Centers as authorized in the National Heart, Blood Vessel, Lung and Blood Act of 1972 (P.L. 92-423). 2. A National Research and Demonstration Center i s defined as a national resource attached t o a major medical complex and dedicated to working i n close collaboration w i t h the National Heart and Lung Institute t o further the goals of the National Heart, Blood Vessel, Lung and Blood Program through a multidisciplined, coordinated, yet flexible, approach t o research, education (public and professional) and demon stration of the applicability of the results o f research. I t is the inclusion of education and demonstrations and the coordination of these programs w i t h the research and training efforts that s e t s a National Research and Demonstration Center apart from other types of programs.

3. Centers will be funded by the grant mechanism, b u t under conditions that will require close coordination w i t h the National Heart and Lung Institute. Proposals should be submitted on Form NIH-398, the application form for traditional research project grants. The format for presentation of a proposal should be as outlined i n the Program Announcement and Guide1 ines: National Research and Demonstration Centers f o r Heart, Blood Vessel, Lung and Blood Diseases and Blood Resources dated August 20, 1973. Awards will be based on national competition. Only a limited number of awards will be made a t the s t a r t of the program; additional Centers may be established l a t e r . 4. To describe the program i n more detail and t o enable potential applicants t o ask questions, the National Heart and Lung I n s t i t u t e plans t o hold a meeting of representatives of interested institutions on o r about October 2 , 1973. The Institute asks f o r l e t t e r s of intent, which will n o t be b i n d i n g , by November 1 , 1973, i n order to s t a r t planning for review of proposals. The deadline for receipt of formal applications i s January 15, 1974. Additional information may be obtained from:
