                 A childhood to remember
While the mission of Children’s Hospital is to provide the finest pediatric health
services available to all Alabama children who need our care, our vision is simply this:
A better childhood for all children.

                  A childhood to remember.

In this Report, you will meet children and families whose lives have been forever changed
because of their experiences with Children’s Hospital of Alabama. These children, we can
happily say, are now on their way to making their own happy memories of childhood.

You will also read about some people who have dedicated themselves to bettering the lives
of children --- including Mike Warren, a long-time trustee of the Children’s Hospital Board
and the Hospital’s new chief executive officer. We hope you will enjoy reading about the
childhood memories that shaped Mike and other of our featured children’s advocates.

           To Children’s Hospital Supporters
I am coming to Children's Hospital at a time of unprecedented growth and record success, thanks to the remarkable
20-year legacy of Dr. Jim Dearth, who retired at the end of 2007, and a dedicated team of outstanding professionals.
We are poised to move to the next level.

In 2007, we once again treated a record number of children from throughout Alabama thanks to the tireless efforts
of our amazing doctors, nurses and staff. We responded to community needs with new subspecialty clinics in
Rheumatology and Endocrinology and expanded our Emergency Department to accommodate the over 50,000 parents
who brought their children for our care at all hours of the day and night. Though we strive to be great, not just big,
our Hospital is now the 10th busiest children's hospital in the country.

We also enjoyed record philanthropic support from throughout the state. Your name in this Report says that you
also want the very best for all our children. The successes of Children's Hospital would not be possible without your
            generosity.

This year's Report theme is "a childhood to remember.” Jim Dearth has always said that our job is to give sick and
injured children a normal childhood, to get them back home and into the rhythms of simply growing up, and dreaming
of what they want to be when they grow up.

I remember that I was a second baseman at age 8 and dreamed of playing baseball like my father. The photo
(lower right, opposite page), taken in Auburn during that time, reminds me that I truly had a childhood to remember.
I wish that for all children in our care.

As we approach our 100th anniversary, our Board has challenged us to plan and execute a strategy to ensure that
Children's Hospital of Alabama is among the elite children's hospitals for the next century of caring. The plans will
require a substantial investment in facilities and programs. We will need your help.

On behalf of the children and families we serve, thank you for your support in 2007.

            Very truly yours,

            Wm. Michael Warren, Jr.

                        Lance Cook
                   was treated in 2007
                     for a combination
                       of diseases that
                    left him paralyzed.

                Lance and his Children’s Hospital
                team conquer paralyzing disease
June, 2007. School was out and summer fun had just begun when 15-year-old Lance Cook fell ill.
First diagnosed with a sinus infection, Lance grew sicker and sicker. Within days, the big, strong,
healthy Ashford High School student lost control of his lower body and the ability to walk.
His parents took him to the emergency room of the local hospital, where physicians immediately
prepared him for transport to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.

Children’s neurologist Dr. Jayne Ness diagnosed Lance with combined acute disseminated
encephalomyelitis and transverse myelitis, diseases that strip the nerves and spinal cord of their
protective covering. The result is paralysis.

Dr. Ness, Dr. Drew Davis and a team of other physicians, nurses and therapists began an aggressive
treatment regimen with Lance, but days, then weeks, went by and Lance still could not walk. Yet
Lance wouldn’t give up. ”God just really gave me the strength and the heart to carry on,” Lance
says, “because I knew I couldn’t give up and be in that chair forever. So I went to work.” Finally, a
pre-dawn phone call from the hospital woke Dr. Ness with the good news --- treatment was working.
Lance could move his legs again.

October, 2007. Classes at Ashford High School have resumed and Lance walks the halls. Not as fast
or effortlessly as before. But he’s walking. Thanks to the great doctors and innovative treatments
                he found at Children’s Hospital.

In 2007, Virginia Rembert and Raeford Liles invested in children through a charitable gift annuity in memory of Virginia’s

brother, Dr. Marshall Pitts, a longtime pediatric surgeon who passed away in 2007. The Liles’ planned gift makes them

the newest members of our Generations Society.

Kohl’s helps save lives with car seat program advocate
Throughout 2007, Kohl’s Department Stores and Children’s Hospital co-hosted events to educate the public about child
passenger safety, to assist parents with the proper installation and use of car safety seats and to update citizens about new
legislation to enhance highway safety, including stronger child passenger safety and a graduated driver’s license law.

The car seat educational events are part of the Kohl’s Cares for Kids ® program, which supports local services provided by
Children’s Hospital’s Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Program. Since 2002, Kohl’s has donated more than $263,995 to Children’s
Hospital to help fund CPS car seat check events around the state, including this year’s $67,378 donation from Kohl’s. During
2007, 188 children were treated in Children’s Hospital’s Trauma Center for life-threatening injuries they received in motor
vehicle crashes. Of these, six children died. Many of the injuries could have been prevented with the appropriate use of the
proper restraint for size and weight of the child.

“One Enchanted Evening – Sparkle, Glitter and Shine” was held on March 10, 2007, at the

home of Charles and Ava McPherson. Levy’s Fine Jewelry and McPherson Oil partnered to host

the Inaugural event to raise money for the UAB Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology
at Children’s Hospital. The event featured a cocktail buffet and a silent auction of fine jewelry,

wine and art. The inaugural event raised over $35,000, which directly benefits pediatric cancer

research at Children’s Hospital. Levy’s hopes to make this an annual event. Shown above at the

Parker’s is a story of hope
Parker McQueen is a child of Children’s. His father, Mike McQueen, MD, has spent countless hours at the
hospital with Parker, but his own experience with Children’s began back in 1986 with his pediatric rotation.
Dr. McQueen was on call at Children’s when his twins were born and again two years later when his wife
went into labor with their fourth son, Parker.

When he was a little less than a year old, Parker began missing some development milestones. After his
first birthday he had his first seizure – a rare type of seizure called infantile spasms. Parker was brought to
Children’s Hospital where he was diagnosed with primary developmental delay. Dr. McQueen estimates that
Parker has been in Children’s around 20 times in the past 12 years.

Dr. McQueen recalls: “In April, we heard the words we had anticipated for years – you need to put your son
on a ventilator.” The McQueens went through the home ventilator class, and Parker is now back at home.
After experiencing Children’s as both a resident and a parent, Dr. McQueen says the excellence of care
available is a comfort to him and his family.

“Parker is an encouragement to every single person that comes in contact with him and, for our family, he
is the center of our hearts. Children’s was able to lovingly and carefully guide us through this most recent
transition, and make us see there really is hope.”
