Web2.0 Mayhem - Link Building There are two strategies with the Web 2.0 Mayhem. 1. Link Building and Traffic Generation: The purpose is to get powerful backlinks to your site that will boost the search engine rankings and traffic of YOUR website or blog. The content that you use in this strategy should always encourage the human reader to visit your site but the links in the content "NEED" to use the keywords you want your website or blog to rank for in the search engines. 2. Affiliate & Product Promotion: The purpose of this is to pre sell the reader to purchase the product you are trying to make money from. You are not concerned about building the rankings of your website but rather you want the content on the web 2.0 sites to rank well and then send the traffic directly to the product or service you are trying to sell. If the product is on your website (you have the shopping cart) then you link to your site however if the product you are trying to sell is on someone elses site (such as an affiliate product) then you link directly to their site. Your content needs to be a presales of the product or service and the text used in the links is not the keywords but rather a call to action. You are not concerned about getting "keyword rankings" for the site you are linking to but rather for converting the reader to a buyer and telling them to "Click Here", "Buy Now", "Learn More" and so on. Phase I - Link Building and Traffic Generation with a Link Bait Page This system is not meant to be the end all be all of promotion, it is simply a strategy that helps bring a huge amount of traffic to your site. You will still want to ensure you do all the other promotion strategies recommended, such as submitting to article directories, free link directories, blog commenting and so on. The time up front is obviously a little longer for you as you learn the system but once you understand it will be much faster. Things like pinging and posting to Twitter.com are really fast but your challenge here will be to understand the interface of each of the services. For example, Clipmarks was a bit of a challenge for me, but once I understood the lingo and that the plug-in was needed, it became very fast and easy. Each site is very different and the terms they use are all their own slang and the navigation is not totally clear at first. Please be patient and learn each system. The best tip is to take notes at each site of the process to make a post. Initialization Phase: The initialization phase is where the majority of the time and effort will be spent. You will be focused on setting up new accounts at a lot of different sites and for each page from your site that you promote using this full system you will need 20 unique articles. For the best results and NO chance of having duplicate content, this as where it is best to use an article spinning software to spin the software into many different articles (20-25). With that being done, you will never have to use the same article on any of the following sites; they will all be spun to be the "same" but "different". It is extremely important that you create unique content for this process to be as effective as possible. The "profile" pages will show in Google and get ranked, so if you have duplicate content, you might be subjected to the Google Slap. For "Link Building" to YOUR site: if you are not sure what to write about, a great resource is to go to http://www.ezinearticles.com, type in your keyword and then click an article. Next scroll down and check out the "Most Viewed EzineArticles" in the "Enter Keyword" Category. These are already proven popular topics. Find an article that relates, read the article and then write your own. The pages that I recommend you promote are: "Link Bait" Pages - Phase I - This is a unique page that you have that is a great resource in your niche for people to link to. An example of this is a list of "Top Article Directories" that people would link to because it is a great resource. Every market has a need for a resource like this. Index Page - Phase II - Focused on a high traffic "Power Keyword" phrase Presales / Sales Page(s) - Phase III - Focused on lesser keywords that are "long tail" and focused on a specific product or service. You are by no means limited to just promoting these pages, however I would recommend, for this process, due to its involvement, that you only focus on these type pages. Note - Creating a linkbait page can feel overwhelming at first because you will bang your head against the wall trying to figure out what to write about. This is, in my opinion, better left to someone else who likes to write. Here are three methods you can use that work very well for creating link bait. 1. Create a resource that is not found other places or one that you can make better than what else is out there. This could be a list of sites, names, places and so on. 2. Create a video related to your topic. Alot of people are uncomfortable with this step as it seems big but if you are comfortable creating videos, then make one that will catch people's interest. 3. The third option (I like this one best) is to search CNN or Yahoo! news with your keyword. Look for something that you could see is potentially controversial and create an article that is based on that topic and references it. You will want to the content to be very well created, unique and controversial... those see to do the best. Phase I - Link Building To Affiliate Product You will want to create content that is useful but its main purpose is to directly sell the idea to the reader that they need the product you are preselling and that they really should follow your recommended call to action and "Buy It Now" or "Sign Up". The content is to target a specific "Keyword" however you are not using those keywords as links in the content. You want the content to rank well and send traffic to your affiliate product but the words used as links will be call to action words. You are going to want to use a redirect for the link in this content, do NOT directly link with an affiliate link provided by the affiliate program you are sending traffic to. Start of the Web 2.0 Mayhem Promotion Strategy Each of these sites have their own terminology for their postings, whether you are making a new "page" for people to link to, or making a new "blog post" for people to comment on. The whole purpose is to promote yourself in each of these "communities" and not look like you are spamming. You want to become part of their "community" and join their social networks. For each of these accounts, make sure to fill out your profile page, add a picture and bio about you. ALL of this information can be false, but you want it to be believable so you don't look spammy. When leaving comments at other sites, NEVER leave links on someone else's comments. It is the first sign of a "spammer" and you don't want to do it. If the site offers "tags" which most of them do, you are going to input all of the keywords you want the page ranking for or getting traffic from. IMPORTANT: When submitting presales material, be very careful not to be over hyped, make sure you are offering useful information. The members of these communities can be very protective and will flag anything they feel is blatant "Internet Marketing". Lets get started! Step 1: Create a spread sheet to organize the domains and all the URL's and passwords you are going to be using. Here is an example spreadsheet to use... http://www.traffickahuna.com/training/example.xls You want to make a separate spreadsheet for each project. I make a separate folder for each project and put the profile images, spreadsheet, content and any other items relating to that project in that folder. This way, when you go back for site maintance or need to reference anything, it is all in one folder. Ensure that you copy down the information from each site that you register a profile at into your excel spreadsheet after each step. This includes your user name, password, email address and the link to the "RSS Feed" from that site. For example, when you are done creating your "Hubpages" profile page and submit your article, it is going to look like this: Click on the RSS Feed button in the address bar to get the "RSS Feed Address" So you want the link for your "profile page" to promote (just the plain old URL in the screen shot there) and the RSS Feed from each of the sites that you are going to and posting your unique articles on. The address in the red box below is going to be the address you are going to save to your spreadsheet, along with the URL to your "profile" page. Step 2: If you are promoting your site (not an affiliate page) then select the one keyword phrase to use for promoting your "Link Bait" page. This is the top keyword you want to rank for with this page. It is important that it be a phrase that you can receive traffic from and you have included in the content on your Link Bait Page. The reason you are starting out with the "Link Bait" page is because it is a page that is a resource that will seem very authentic when bookmarked to such sites as Digg. If you use just your index page, it will not get votes and may even get voted down. I also recommend for the first 4 weeks that you are promoting any one page on YOUR site; you stick to using the main keyword phrase for that page when linking directly to it with no variations. This will give you the best focus on ranking for that keyword, then after 4 weeks you can start using variations. So if you are using "red cars" for your index page and "blue trucks" for an opt in page, then from the first day you start promoting those pages you only link to them with that exact term. Then after 4 weeks you start using variations. An example of variations for the phrase "red race car" could be: red racing cars shopping for red racing cars buy a red race car If you are promoting an affiliate product or service then I HIGHLY recommend you start with the actual product name or a close variation of it. If there is already lots of competition on the product name by its self then try adding these after the product name... compare comparisons complaint deal guide guides home home page homepage info information instructions manual online order review reviews scam scams secret secrets sign up signup site technique techniques testimonial testimonials tip tips web site website Step 3: Create a new account at http://www.gather.com Submit one article that uses the same keyword as the page you are promoting. When you are making your Gather.com ID, TRY to make your username the "keyword" from the site you are promoting. For example, you are going to be promoting your "Red Race Car" site, try and make your Gather.com ID = "redracecar". The reason is your "Gather.com" address is going to be username.gather.com Also link the article directly to your web page using your "top keyword" from Step 1. Make sure that you do NOT put more then 2 links in your content or your content will be red flagged. There is a great tutorial about Gather at: Gather Tutorial Once you have successfully created your account, go to Google and do searches for general market related articles on gather.com that are ranking well in Google. To do this use this search phrase: "keyword" gather.com Obviously replace the word "keyword" with your market. Find 10 articles and post a comment on them, it can be a very brief comment and be sure to rate the article well too. You will need to be logged into your account at gather.com to do this. This is to provide some internal linking to your site. The reason you are looking in Google is because you want pages that you know are indexed in Google and have some traffic to pass to your page. If you are using the product name as the keyword then you may not find much, so use the main keyword of the product. For example is you were promoting, TrafficKahuna you would use "Website Promotion" as the keyword. NOTE: Do not spend too much time getting comments, if you spend more then 20 minutes then that is too much. If you can only find 5 pages to leave comments, then so be it, the optimum however is 10. Also, do NOT put links in the comments; just let the system automatically link to your gather account. Step 4: Create a new account at http://www.squidoo.com Squidoo creates what is called a "lens" and and you will post your article on your lens. Make sure to ;ink directly to the webpage using your "top keyword" from Step 1 and include on the Squidoo page the RSS feed from your gather.com page. Tutorial: Squidoo Tutorial Follow the same steps as gather.com to search for articles on Squidoo you can post comments too. TIP: Squidoo is a little different. They do not have an RSS Feed for your profile page, only the individual lenses. On the lens, when you click "subscribe", a new window will pop up, just right click the "view xml" and copy the link location or if your lens name is: http://www.squidoo.com/health-care/ ...then the RSS Feed is: http://www.squidoo.com/xml/syndicate_lens/health-care ...you just need to add /xml/syndicate_lens/ Also it is important to note that any comments you leave in the feedback/guestbook box on Squidoo are not always immediately approved. Some of them will show up right away and others will not. It is important to find pages that are ranked well with Squidoo, because you know they are updated frequently and so you have the best chance of getting your comments accepted. Step 5: Create a new account and Hub Page at http://www.hubpages.com Link directly to the webpage using your "top keyword" from Step 1 and include the RSS Feed from your website (if you have one), gather.com and Squidoo.com Follow the same steps as gather.com to search for articles on Hubpages you can post comments on other popular pages. TIP: For Hubpages, you create a page for each article and then you have a profile page such as: http://hubpages.com/profile/username Step 6: Post to the BlogFeeder Network with a link to your main webpage with your top keyword (do not use variations here) and also to Gather, Squidoo and Hubpages. Follow the instructions on the front page. You will not be able to link to all 4 of the above sites in each post but I recommend you do the following... Post Section 1 - "Link Bait" or "Product Your Promoting" and Gather Post Section 2 - "Link Bait" or "Product Your Promoting" and Squidoo Post Section 3 - "Link Bait" or "Product Your Promoting" and Hubpages TIP: Make sure to double check the links you use, a common mistake is to accidentally put a www in the URL for Gather such as: http://www.username.gather.com/ This instead should be: http://username.gather.com/ Step 7: Create a blog at http://www.blogger.com This site is one of the original blogging platforms that became extremely poweful with the 2004 "blog and ping". Blogger has a lot of limitations in regards to what you can implement with it, but it still works when used right. Make sure to create a good quality blogger blog and use unique content and this blog will do well for you. Make sure to add links in the side bar of your blogger blog that link your website, Gather, Squidoo and Hubpages. Step 8: Create an account and submit your blog blog to http://www.mybloglog.com If you are promoting a non blog website or an affiliate product, then submit your blogger blog. Learn how at... http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mybloglog/tutorials/blogger.html My BlogLog is more or less a "listing" of blogs that you read or are "interested" in. Again, you want to fill in the profile information to make it believable, and you want to link to the most popular blogs on the site. Make sure to click on the tags you created and find 10 other communities to join. This will create internal linking in MyBlogLog to your page. Step 9: Create an account and "claim" your blog (again use blogger if your site is not a blog) at http://www.technorati.com/ It is important that you take your time and create a proper profile and tags for your new account. Also upload an image or graphic. Once you claim your blog you will have a page such as: http://technorati.com/blogs/www.yourdomainname.com Step 10: Create "3" new accounts at OnlyWire.com and register with all the recommended bookmarking sites. You are going to need three throw away email accounts to do this. The reason is because OnlyWire limits the amount of submission per account and the initialization phase does more then allowed. You are going to sign up at each of the sites listed on the left hand side. With this "program" much like other bookmarking programs, it is going to "bookmark" the links that you provide onlywire.com. So when you are creating your 3 accounts, ensure that you are using "unrelated" user names at these accounts. This is going to be time consuming, but it is a powerful system. Also, OnlyWire is a powerful, free service that works very well however; it is not 100% and will not usually post to more then about 60% of the sites it submits to. If you own a "bookmarking" software or script, then you can use that as well, but OnlyWire is a great free alternative. Step 11: Create an account at http://www.wetpaint.com Much like squidoo, this site you are basically going to be making a "page" or "wiki" for people to link to and comment on. Ensure that when you pick your username, you choose your "keyword" as the user name. Your wet paint address is going to be your "username.wetpaint.com" so you want to ensure your keywords are there. Comment on 5-10 other popular "wiki's", bookmark and ping your Wiki Page and RSS Feed with http://www.ping.in Step 12: Create an account at http://www.multiply.com Post a unique article to your account blog at multiply. Comment on 5-10 other popular blogs and ping your blog and RSS Feed with http://www.ping.in Step 13: Create an account at http://www.ning.com Post a unique article to your page. Set up some of the other account functions. You can post pictures, music, start a group, lead a discussion etc... Comment on 5-10 other popular networks and ping your ning and RSS Feed with http://www.ping.in HERE is where the powerful promotion really begins. You really want to becareful with these upcoming sites. These sites are very well-established and hard on spammers. You want to ensure that you fill out your profile pages completely, comment on other people's stories and look like part of the community. Step 14: Create a new account at http://www.digg.com and then Digg your page. It is important that you also Digg some current stories that are popular so you create an authentic looking account. This site is very tough on spammers, so you only Digg your link-bait page. If you are promoting an affilaite product then digg yoru blogger blog. Bookmark your “Digg” page and ping it and RSS Feed with http://www.ping.in Step 15: Create a new account at http://www.reddit.com Add your linkbait page or the Blogger blog. It is important that you also vote for some current stories that are popular so you create an authentic looking account. Bookmark your "Reddit" page and ping it and RSS Feed with http://www.ping.in Step 16: Create a new account at http://www.plime.com Add your linkbait page or the blogger blog. It is important that you also vote for some current stories that are popular so you create an authentic looking account. DO NOT leave links in all of your comments. This is a very hard community to get into and be accepted. Bookmark your "Plime" page and ping it and RSS Feed with http://www.ping.in Step 17: Create a new account at http://www.clipmarks.com. You will need to install a Fire Fox add-on that they give you. Next, try to find 5 popular and high page rank profiles and "pop" a post and add a "comment" to get links internally to your page. Now Clipmark your main page at Gather, Squidoo, Hubpages, Blogger, Wetpaint, Multiply, Ning.com and a couple PortalBlogFeeder posts. It is handy to keep the links to those pages in your spreadsheet, instead of having to go and find them, you can cut and paste and go. This is a very powerful site that you will quickly see show up in the search engines. For your "Link Bait" post on Clipmark's, make sure to really create a quality post. A great thing to do is to clip a couple sections of your page and then add commentary. Book mark your "Clipmark" page and ping it and RSS Feed with http://www.ping.in Step 18: Create a new account at http://www.stumbleupon.com You will need to install a Fire Fox add-on that they give you. Next, "stumbleupon" your link-bait page and 20 other pages. Stumble Upon also has a "blog" feature. If you go to you profile page, you are also able to leave articles posts on your profile. Bookmark your "Stumble Upon" profile page and ping it and the RSS feed with http://www.ping.in I suggest doing a mixture of both. I try and use the same stumbleupon account for all my projects, so I have lots of pages that I have "Stumbled Upon" and also have pages promoted with their "blog feature" Step 19: Create a new account at http://www.tumblr.com Post a new article. Submit the RSS Feed from your main site, Gather, Squidoo, Hubpages, Blogger, Wetpaint, Multiply, Ning.com, Stumbleupon, Digg and Clipmarks. Bookmark your “Tumblr” page and ping it and RSS Feed with http://www.ping.in Step 20 : Create a new account at http://www.jaiku.com Make a manual post about your new main page post and link directly to it. Bookmark your "Jaiku" page and ping it and RSS Feed with http://www.ping.in Submit the RSS Feed from your main site, Gather, Squidoo, Hubpages, Wetpaint, Blogger, Multiply, Ning.com, Stumbleupon, Digg and Clipmarks. You want to make sure that you don't post all of the links all at once. You want to make a post every 30 seconds or one minute. They bascially have a "time line" like a big chat room. Posting every 30 seconds or one minute will allow others to post inbetween yours, then you can use the pinging service to ping the link and RSS Feed. TIP: Jaiku will ask you to activate a mobile phone number; the reason is you can post through text messaging. Just enter any number in here, and activate later, you do not need to use this feature as you will not be adding to it with text messaging. Step 21: Create a new account at http://www.twitter.com Post about the exact things you did above and link to the pages. Do not link too long URL's or else a redirect will be used that does not help from a search engine perspective. Make a post that includes your keywords and your link to your site. Submit the RSS Feed from your main site, Gather, Squidoo, Hubpages, Blogger, Wetpaint, Multiply, Ning.com, Stumbleupon, Digg and Clipmarks. Bookmark your "Twitter" page and ping it with http://www.ping.in TIP: Twitter is extremely simple. You do not add your RSS Feed to it; instead you simply just make small one sentence statements of exactly the steps you are taking. Do not make one long post that includes a bunch of different steps, instead make a different post for each step that you did. For example, if you have added a new article to gather.com then I would simply put a post like... I added a new article to gather at http://www.username.gather.com ...That is all you do. Only do little one sentence posts. Another example is: I updated my page at http://username.jaiku.com/, check it out! Another important thing is that Twitter will create a redirect for long URLs so do not enter long URLs. You can play with it and see what the limit is. The redirect is useless from a SEO standpoint. If your URLs are too long, such as the MyBlogLog and Technorati pages, then do not post to them. Step 22: Create an account at http://www.bumpzee.com Post a unique article and includes links to Gather, Squidoo, Hubpages, Blogger, Wetpaint, Multiply, Ning.com, Stumbleupon, Digg, Reddit, Plime, Clipmark, Tumblr and Jaiku. Bookmark your "Bumpzee" page and ping it and RSS Feed with http://www.ping.in Step 23: Create an account at http://www.blogowogo.com Add an unique article and include links to Gather, Squidoo, Hubpages, Blogger, Wetpaint, Multiply, Ning.com, Stumbleupon, Digg, Reddit, Plime, Clipmark, Tumblr and Jaiku. Bookmark your "Blogowogo" page and ping it and RSS Feed with http://www.ping.in Step 24: Create an account at http://diy.netscape.com Add an unique article and include links to Gather, Squidoo, Hubpages, Blogger, Wetpaint, Multiply, Ning.com, Stumbleupon, Digg, Reddit, Plime, Clipmark, Tumblr and Jaiku. Bookmark your "Netscape" page and ping it and RSS Feed with http://www.ping.in Step 25: Create an account at http://www.feedbite.com Click on "create bundle" and create one for each of your RSS Feeds from your main site, Gather, Squidoo, Hubpages, Blogger, Wetpaint, Multiply, Ning.com, Clipmark, Tumblr and Twitter. Bookmark your feedbite.com profile page: Example - http://www.feedbite.com/viewprofile.php?user=### TIP: FeedBite creates a profile page, an individual page for each RSS Feed and an RSS Feed for each page it creates (confused yet). I recommend you bookmark only the profile page in the initialization phase and then you can bookmark the individual pages in the maintenance period. Step 26: Promote your feedbite.com profile page with BlogFeeder. The nice thing here is it does not matter what so ever for the content. The easiest thing to do here is to write three 200 word articles on your absolute favourite topic that you can talk hours about. And then at the bottom of the article put a link to your Feed Bite page. You will find it similar to Clipmark's, this site will quickly pop up in the rankings. When you are finished with Steps 10-25, take the links from all of your sites and bookmark them using your book marking software, or through onlywire.com. You have already done only wire with all of the sites from Steps 1-10, so you just have to finish from Step 10 to 25. End Result: You now have a network of links from authority sites. These sites do not have page rank yet but they are associated with authority sites that are greatly respected by Google and the other search engines. The system is tied together to provide the most amount of exposure possible and the next steps will be much easier for promotion maintenance since most everything is tied together through RSS feeds. Phase II - 2nd Page/Term Promotion Read Before You Start: You will find this step is much easier then the previous because you are posting less and also because you should have the hang of using the other sites. Once you have gone through this a few times, this should be done fairly quickly. If you are promoting your own site then you would have promoted a link bait page in the first phase and now you will want to promote your index page. If you are promoting an affiliate product then pick a second "high converting" term. Step 1: Decide on the best keyword phrase you want to use to promote. Step 2: Select the one keyword and submit an article to either a brand new page at: http://www.hubpages.com http://www.gather.com Or add a new piece of content to your page at... http://www.squidoo.com With the strictness of Google towards Squidoo, it is the most effective to add your new content all focused on the same topic to your same lens. The highest ranked lenses are the ones that have lots of content and are changed significantly when updated. Remember, you are not submitting to all three this time, instead you will rotate through them each time you promote your site. Step 3: Post another article to your blogger blog. Step 4: Post to the BlogFeeder network, with a link to your index page, to Squidoo, Gather or Hubpages and your blogger blog. Step 5: Bookmark your index page, the Gather or Hubpages that you posted to and the blogger blog. If you posted to Squidoo, do not bookmark it again. Also add a few of your posts from the PortalBlogFeeder network that you have not bookmarked before. Step 6: Find 2 more communities to join at http://www.mybloglog.com This is building the internal linking to your profile page. Step 7: Clipmark your index page and make sure to create a worthwhile commentary, the Gather or Hubpages if you posted to either one of them and your blogger blog. Ping this page with http://www.ping.in Step 8: Make a manual post at Jaiku about your index page, include the Gather or Hubpages if you posted to either one of them and your blogger blog. Ping the site with http://www.ping.in Step 9: You do not need to add anything to your Tumblr and FeedBite pages as they are feed 100% by RSS Feeds but you will want to check that it is updated and then Ping your Tumblr page with http://www.ping.in Step 10: Make a post at Twitter about your new page, Clipmark, Tumblr, Jaiku, the Gather, Squidoo or Hubpages and your blogger blog. Ping your Twitter page with http://www.ping.in Phase III - Maintenance This step should be repeated for each important page on your site or for the terms you want to win for in promoting your affilaite product. Step 1: Decide on the best keyword phrase you want to use to promote. Step 2: Select the one keyword and submit an article to either a brand new page at: http://www.hubpages.com http://www.gather.com Or add a new piece of content to your page at... http://www.squidoo.com IMPORTANT - If you are promoting YOUR site, then you will want to also link the article directly to BOTH your new page you are using the keyword associated with and also your index page using the keyword that you used when you promoted that page. Step 3: Post to your blogger blog. Step 4: Post to the PortalBlogFeeder network, with a link to your page and also to the Squidoo, Gather or Hubpages page you just added and your blogger blog. Step 5: Bookmark your web page if you are promoting your site and the Gather or Hubpages that you posted to plus the new blogger post. If you posted to Squidoo, do not bookmark it again. Also add a few of your posts from the PortalBlogFeeder network that you have not bookmarked before. Step 6: Find 2 more communities to join at http://www.mybloglog.com Step 7: Clipmark your web page and make sure to create a worthwhile commentary and also Clipmark the Gather or Hubpages if you posted to either one of them and your new blogger post. Ping this page with http://www.ping.in Step 8: Make a manual post at Jaiku about your web page (if promoting your site) and the Gather or Hubpages if you posted to either one of them and your blogger blog post. Ping the site with http://www.ping.in Step 9: You do not need to add anything to your Tumblr and FeedBite pages as they are feed 100% by RSS Feeds but you will want to check that it is updated and then Ping your Tumblr page with http://www.ping.in Step 10: Make a post at Twitter about your new page, Clipmark, Tumblr, Jaiku and the Gather, Squidoo or Hubpages plus blogger post. Ping your Twitter page with http://www.ping.in Rinse and Repeat: Continue of the maintenance phase for as many pages as you want to promote or terms you want to dominate for. You should always start from scratch for each new website or product you are promoting.
