A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

NOW IS THE TIME! If you have been thinking of becoming a member of the South County Unit 500 Board
of Directors, please contact Issi Stefani at 925-485-3285.

The Board is made up of a maximum of twelve members who serve a two-year period. Meetings are held
approximately once a month. The Board functions as a branch of ACBL, promoting bridge within its boundaries.
Members work together to plan events throughout the year and the Sectional Tournament in August. If you have a little
time to spare and a lot of enthusiasm, we need you! Current board members are listed on the back of Table Talk and
will be happy to answer your questions.

Oodles of special games this month – higher points and even a splash of gold (team games) – check out the calendar
and the individual club sections.

Mary Ramos
Unit 500 President

             ***********************************************
I would like to use this section to address our Unit 500 as the Table Talk editor.

From the editor: At my first meeting as a new board member, the subject of finding a new editor was presented. I
volunteered to be the “interim editor” which started with the March, 2004 publication. My background was in business
and assuming the position as editor was a new experience – I had no experience! The format was changed (not everyone
was happy) to make it easier to publish and submit to our website. I want to thank all those who patiently allowed me to
grow into the role. Over the years, I hope most of you have embraced the changes.

Working on Table Talk has been terrifying, exasperating and rewarding. These emotions were felt each month. No
matter what happened in my life, Table Talk was published. There was always a sense of relief when it went “to print.”

It is time for me to step aside and this edition will be my last one as the editor. Carla Francis, treasurer of Unit 500, has
graciously agreed to take over. Please give her your support and encouragement.

I wish to express gratitude to all those who faithfully submitted their articles and reports. Bye for now and I will see you
in the President’s Message.

Mary Ramos
Table Talk Editor

                  Members on the Move

Welcome to a big bunch of folks transferring in from other units: Steve & Colette
Castellino, Song Wang, and Alice Herceg, all of Fremont (we must be doing something
right there!), and Kenneth King of Castro Valley.

Moving up the Masterpoint Ladder

Congratulations to Ivor Weller: during the May STaC week he mined the silver he need to become a Life
Master, and now he’s Bronze (500+ masterpoints).

A Visit from an Old Partner (of several of us)

During its Saturday Swiss teams STaC game on August 26th, the Fremont Duplicate Bridge Center was
pleasantly surprised by a visit from Tom Fraas. Tom played in games at many of our clubs for years, until
2002, when he moved to Sacramento and then to his native New York. He remarried, and we were sad to
learn of the passing of his second wife earlier this year. Tom, a former United Airlines employee, was in the
area for a United golf tournament at the end of August, and he stretched his visit by a week to spend time
with his children, who live here.

Tom was a partner and friend of another frequent Fremont player (and co-director), Wendell (Wayne)
Smith. I tried to dig contact information about Wayne for Tom out of my ACBL database, but it was
woefully out of date (all I could remember was that Wayne had moved to Texas some four years ago). Then
Tom remembered that Wayne had been married in the past to someone whose father had been a bridge
player, and the nickel dropped: I suddenly remembered it was Fred Shehab, with whom several of us have
partnered at the Redwood Bridge Center now that he’s begun playing in the flesh and not just on line
(where—on line—one of his partners is…Wayne!). I was able to give Tom Fred’s phone number; they
connected, and I hope trust that Tom has now connected with Wayne, too.

Your faithful correspondent didn’t know Tom very well, but I do have a favorite story about him. It was not
long before Tom’s departure from the Bay Area, back in’02, that I began playing duplicate bridge, first at the
Piedmont Bridge Center but soon after that in Fremont. The then manager/director of the Fremont DBC,
Peter Cheung, sort of took me under his wing, and in return for his agreeing to play with me in games outside
of Fremont, in which he would give me stern Zen master-like instruction, I was to be the on-call fill-in
person for his Saturday Fremont game. Not long after we agreed on this arrangement, Tom, a regular player
at that club, arrived without a partner, and at the last minute I was assigned to play with him. With no time
before the beginning of the game to put together a card, Tom asked me what my general approach was,
including whether I played Two over One. I paused uncomfortably for too long a time and finally blurted out
something like, “Uh, sure; you bid one of something, and then I bid two of something, right?” (I don’t think
I’d even heard of 2/1.) He quickly responded that we’d probably better play Standard American, and he had
the wisdom to ask me whether I played that. “Sure,” I said, and we began the game. After not many boards
he put down his cards, frustrated with my rapidly accumulating errors in bidding and play, and with not too
well disguised disappointment, he leaned forward on the table and said, “You don’t play Standard
American.” That was the last time that we played, and I hope that that wasn’t a big reason why he departed
the area. I told this story to Tom last month; not surprisingly, he didn’t remember the incident, and (or but)
he got a kick out of it.

Tom is now living part of the year in Buffalo and snowbirding in Clearwater, Florida. If you’d like to get in
touch with him, his e-mail address is tjfraassr@yahoo.com. His Florida address is 15777 Bolesta Road, No.
137, Clearwater 33760.

New Bridge Class for Beginners Starts This Month

Tell your non-bridge-playing friends—as well as those who who’ve been playing for decades—that another
chance to learn modern bridge has arrived. On Tuesday afternoon, October 3rd, I’ll begin teaching another
edition of Audrey Grant’s Bridge Basics 1: An Introduction, at the Fremont Senior Center (40086 Paseo
Padre Parkway). It’s an eight-week course that’ll set players on the Right Path for playing bridge (five-card
majors, Convenient Minors, and lots of tips on playing and defending hands). The classes are two hours in
length, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., and include playing set hands as well as lecture. Contact the Senior Center
(510-790-6600) for information about registration.

With any luck I’ll be able to offer the same course this fall in the evenings at the Castro Valley Adult School,
but that’s not a sure thing yet. People interested in learning bridge through the Audrey Grant approach, using
her latest materials, should enroll in the Fremont Senior Center to be sure.

Special Club Games This Month

• October is ACBL’s Club Appreciation month. It’s never been clear to me who’s supposed to be showing
the appreciation (ACBL, by reducing table fees? Club directors, by doing the same? Players, by turning
out for games?), but the month is celebrated by clubs’ holding special games (with increased fees), in
which, if you do well, you can earn gold masterpoints—maybe even 0.5 of ’em in a single game!—along
with red points, all in the comfort of your local club, without having to drive half an hour or more to a
regional tournament to win points of those colors. Check with the clubs (and the calendar of this issue of
    Table Talk) for their offerings.

Note: The information that appears in this column is gleaned from my reviewing the results for sectional and
regional tournaments in District 21, as well as the occasional national championship. To make sure that I
haven’t overlooked your name (and performance), or to let me know of tournaments that you played in
outside of our district, please get in touch with me, at LSJ63@ yahoo.com or 510-538-9889.

Great Western Swiss Teams STaC VII, August 21–27

South County players did well in silver point Swiss teams games during late August’s STaC (Sectional
Tournaments at Clubs) week, both in our unit and beyond. Note that this year’s results include victory points;
to understand their significance, keep in mind that most of these games consisted of four rounds of play, with
the possibility of winning as many as 20 victory points per round, for a total of 80. Thus, for instance, a
team’s amassing a total of 63 victory points over four rounds in a sense corresponds to a 78.75% game.

Here are the big winners. And biggest among them is Chuck Wong; he led all Unit 500 players in silver
points earned during Swiss STaC week, with 17.51. This placed him 17th among the 6,013 players who
earned masterpoints in all of the Western Conference Swiss team games that week. Tom Nugent was 85th,
with 10.77, and Jim Kelsey was a skosh behind Tom, in 86th.

District 21 All-Western Championships, Hyatt Regency Hotel, Santa Clara, August 28–
September 4

One of the first events to kick off this popular Bay Area regional tournament was the first bracketed
knockout teams, the Kit Carson. Teaming with a couple of players in my Friday afternoon Bayshore Bridge
Club game, your faithful correspondent and Margaret Halland survived into the finals and missed coming
in first by our opponents’ bidding and making a 6 Club contract that one of our teammates heroically bid to 7
NT and went down 1; ah well, 16.06 gold points wasn’t a bad way to start the week. While we were in our
third round, on Wednesday afternoon, Dan Wong was pulling down third place overall in the side game, and
Darlene Mayhew was sixth in that event. In that evening’s Swiss teams Bill Hodges & Civia Rudman were
tops in strat B and third OA; Steve Chen & Yi-Qun Jin tied for sixth.

On Thursday afternoon Helen Wood tied for third OA in the 299er pairs, and in the same room regular
Weekes Park players Mike & Mary Lubin claimed second OA in the 99er pairs; winning her first red
points, Jo Callahan placed fourth OA. In the Thursday evening Swiss, Dave & Joyce Denyven & Trudie
Sinclair were first in the B strat and tied for second OA.

The long Labor Day weekend began with the two-session Friday’s senior pairs, and Nai-hsien Mao & Jim
Harper placed sixth in strat C. That afternoon Virginia Herring and Vince De Pasquale ended their run in
bracket 2 of the Daniel Boone KOs with a third-place tie; the all-South County team of Joanne & Robert
Wegsten, Ivor Weller, & Judy Allrich accomplished the same in bracket 3. Meanwhile Bill Beeson was
pulling down sixth OA in the 299er pairs. In the Friday evening Swiss, the team of Terry Terzian, Jim
Kelsey, & Chuck Wong placed third overall.

On Saturday morning I continued my directing duties at the tournament and was assigned to the 299er pairs;
in that event I finally met Charlie Conrad & Tina Chen of Castro Valley, charming folks who came in third
OA. Bin Liang, our newest Life Master, and frequent partner Song Wang played in both sessions of
Saturday’s open pairs; they ended up second in strats B and C and fifth OA; Venkat Sivasankaran & Jey
Jeyakumar were third in C. In that afternoon’s side game, the Ivor & Judy paired and placed fifth in strat
C. Meanwhile Gary Peck was winding up a nice run in the Annie Oakley KOs with a tie for third in bracket
1, and that evening Trudie was on the team that won bracket 3. Saturday also was the day for the compact
KOs, and Nai-hsien & Jim Harper won bracket 2.

The tournament’s signature event, the All Western Championship open pairs, began on Saturday with two
qualifying sessions; the 50-odd fortunate (and skilled) pairs advanced to the two-session finals on Sunday
and included Steve Castellino, who placed 27th.
The final day of the tournament was Labor Day, and in that day’s premier Swiss teams event, the A/X flight,
Jey Jeyakumar & Jim Kelsey placed second in X and tied for tenth OA. In the B/C/D Swiss, Vince &
Virginia came in eighth in the B strat. Finally, in that day’s senior Swiss event, Jan Hollowell & Penny
Cobleigh were on the team that placed second in C and fourth in B.

Sacramento Fall Sectional, Orangevale Community Center, September 15–17

In the featured pairs event, the Saturday open pairs, Nancy Boyd had an impressive 60.20% game, earning
her fourth place overall among the 68 pairs competing—and 6.75 silver masterpoints. In Sunday’s premier
Swiss teams flight, the A/X, her team placed sixth overall.
                                                                     Profile of
                                                              Preston Mendell
Preston Mendell is one of those rare native Californians; he was born and raised in San Francisco, graduated from USF
with a degree in Business (1953). For twenty years he served as a Deputy Assessor for San Mateo County; next he
attended Lincoln University, receiving a law degree in 1976 (Criminal Juvenile Attorney), then served in Alameda
County for several years. After marrying (he is now a widower), he and his wife raised three children – Paul, a
contractor; Carol, a housewife; and Janet, a family counselor. He also has six grandchildren and three greats!

At age 25 Preston’s mother-in-law insisted he and his wife learn that “wonderful game called Bridge!” As the years
rolled along he eventually started playing some duplicate with his brother who lives in Reno. In 1998 he joined the
ACBL, receiving six red points with him. (Imagine – reds before blacks!) His brother is a professional poker player.
Since 2004 (when he joined Terry’s Monday games), he also started participating in Jim Broaddus’ Wednesday/Friday
games in Hayward and Castro Valley. He has lived in Hayward for several years. Preston also went on a couple of
Terry’s bridge cruises. He and Jim have played in the last couple Hayward Sectionals, placing 1st and 2nd (this last one
in a Swiss Event with Jim, Doris Matteson and JT). In the last couple of years he has now accumulated twelve red and
gold points with his professional poker playing brother! His favorite area players are Jim Broaddus and Doris Popky
(more on her later).

At age 76, he is retired (plays bridge of course), has traveled and cruised to Alaska, Mexico, England, Italy, France,
Morocco, Spain, Belgium, Germany and Japan – all in one day (JUST KIDDING!)

Two other favorite hobbies have been Chess and Scrabble. Years back he played tournaments in both.

Now to the exciting present and future of Preston Mendell - he met Doris Popky ONLINE! After communicating for a
time, they met in person (I think it’s called dining and dating)! He eventually convinced her to learn duplicate bridge
and plays with her sometimes on Mondays. At the end of October, he and Doris are purchasing a mobile home
together and moving to Rohnert Park where both have family members nearby. Doris enjoys cooking, traveling,
reading bridge books and is planning a most unusual kitchen, dubbed “a Serious Kitchen” by Preston.

To both, we say “Bon Voyage” and wish them a happy life filled with good travels, good bridge and, of course, good
serious cooking by Doris.

Confucius say: Listen carefully to advice given by mother-in-law when age 25. Rewards later in life!

Want to learn bridge (or have friends who want to)? Learn it the Easybridge way—
♣ with other newcomers to the game (no one with more than 20 masterpoints*
      permitted)
♣ with the emphasis on learning by playing (rather than lengthy lectures)
♣ with a quiet playing environment (no distraction of another game going on in the
      same room)
♣ with supervised play in an ACBL-sanctioned, masterpoints-awarding game (have a
question about what to do, at any time? Just ask!)
♣ with friendly table fees (why should newcomers have to pay what the pros pay?)
♣ with truly free refreshments (no contributions asked)

Our new game is off the launching pad, but it’s not too late to catch a shuttle and catch
up with us before we go into orbit. To join in, come to the commodious Fremont Senior
Center on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m.—and tell your friends! Games are free (no table fees at
all) through October 3rd. And that’s the day we start awarding masterpoints.

*For the Weekes Park Easybridge Club, the masterpoint limit is now 30.

   Hi Folks,
Several years ago the ACBL instituted some special annual
games during the month of October as a “thank you” to its
sanctioned clubs. These games carry very high masterpoint
awards and I will be conducting a goodly number of them this
     month, as follows:
October 4 CLUB APPRECIATION PAIRS GAME 10:30 AM, Lakeside BC

Club Appreciation Pairs Games (shuffle-deal-and play) award black points
at 100% Sectional rating, while the Club Appreciation Team Games (Swiss
Teams) award 5% gold points to a maximum of 0.25 gold per player (the
remainder of the award is black at 100% Sectional rating). Table fees
will be the same as usual in the pair games, with an additional $1.50 per
player in the team events. These will be some of our biggest masterpoints
games for all of 2006, with a splash of gold in the Swiss Teams games.
     Make plans to attend!

Special ½-price Nights at the Redwood Bridge
                   Club!
In an effort to breathe new life into Tuesday night bridge at
Redwood BC, I am offering the following special promotion
 during the month of October:

$3.50 table fees with a minimum of 7 tables in
                      play
That’s right, table fees will be just $3.50 per player with a
 minimum of
7 full tables in play. With less than 7 tables, the usual
 table fees of $7
will apply. This promotion will be in effect each Tuesday
night in October including the 24th which will be a Unit Game
 (BIG masterpoint awards).
Please note the Redwood BC will be closed on Oct. 31
(Halloween).

**Important Note: Advance reservations are required on
Tuesday evenings. If you intend to play you must phone or e-
mail me in advance to indicate your intention to play. We
often don’t have enough players for a game and we wouldn’t
want you showing up only to find there is no game. So please
call (510 581-4424) or e-mail (terryterz@comcast.net) me
prior to 4 PM on game day (and preferably the day before). A
decision will be made by 5 PM as to the status of that
night’s game, and everyone will be notified. Thank you for
your cooperation.
