A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

On Wednesday, November 8th at the Lakeside Bridge Club, we celebrated the 2500 masterpoint
“Gold Life Master” milestone achievement of both Terry Terzian and Chuck Wong. We all know
how difficult it is to surprise others but we were determined. Chuck was very helpful in planning the
surprise for Terry – trying to surprise both at the same time would have been impossible. Jim Kelsey
kindly agreed to be the director for the Wednesday game so that Terry and Chuck, playing as
partners, could have a relaxing game of bridge. Although Terry may have discovered that there was a
party, I am sure that he did not know that arrangements were made for him to play, rather than direct.
Many players brought finger food and the unit supplied a scrumptious chocolate cake with whipped
cream frosting. Jan brought our white table cloths and a vase of fresh flowers. Banners were made
announcing congratulations to both Terry and Chuck. Darlene Mayhew took pictures of the
festivities and put together a photo album capturing all those who attended. The only downside was
that Chuck was privy to all the plans. Little did he know that the surprise was going to progress to his
Ashland Bridge Club - so, Thursday was Chuck’s surprise. Lisa Evans graciously agreed to direct the
game and Gary Peck came to play with Chuck. Rose Skorup provided the wonderful munchies. Terry
also came to enjoy Chuck’s surprise and Darlene captured the event for another photo album. Of
course, the white table cloth, another delicious chocolate cake and the banners in the background
were the finishing touches.

Both of these surprise games were successful because lots of people gave of their time and talents.
Thank you to all those who provided snacks especially Rose, who took care of Thursday. We are
grateful to Jim and Lisa who agreed to direct so that Terry and Chuck could enjoy their parties while
having a relaxing game of bridge (thanks also to Gary for playing with Chuck). We appreciate
Darlene sharing her marvelous talent and I am sure we will all relive these celebrations through her
photo albums. Jan and I enjoyed taking care of the planning and execution of these “surprise” parties.
Again, Congratulations Terry and Chuck!

This month’s Table Talk is out just before our unit’s Holiday Party. Flyers and sign up sheets are
available at all the clubs. There will be two sessions of “Silver Point” pairs games: the First Game
will start at 10:30 AM and the Second Game at approximately 3:30 PM with a hot catered meal
being served around 2:30. You may play in either one, or both games… we hope you’ll join us for
both!). The game prices are reduced and the meal is free to Unit 500 members and reasonably priced
for all others. We will also have our Annual Membership meeting.

Profile of
   Terry Terzian

Many folks go thru their lives with ??? marks. Seems like Terry T.
has proceeded with many !!! points. Terry thoroughly enjoys his full
time career, in that it is “a fun line of work – a real people job!” He
considers it (though sometimes very time consuming) non-stressful,
and does not get tired of it. He adds, “I feel it is important to love
your line of work and it helps when you are doing something that also
provides enjoyment to others!” (Ed. Note: Maybe that’s why he is so
good at it.) Rumor has it that he is also an excellent teacher and is an
exceptional “warrior” in the promotion of bridge!

“Unfortunately bridge has several major strikes against it,” states Terry Terzian, when looking at
the long-range future of the game we all love. “There are few role models in bridge. There is no
tournament money circuit in bridge as there is in other major sports. Bridge has no presence on
television, and it’s not a good spectator sport. We’ve always had difficulty attracting young
people to this marvelous game. European countries seem to have better success in getting their
youth involved in bridge. Families are more nuclear than they were years ago, and don’t do as
many things together like card-playing. I sometimes wish Bill Gates, who is an avid duplicate
bridge player, would take out a TV ad promoting bridge. Something like that might just have a
significant impact.” Further, Terry has expressed his specific disappointment in the decline of
the game in the last twenty years.

Terry T. was born and raised in Castro Valley, attending Castro Valley High School. He then
graduated from UC Davis in Plant Science. He has two brothers, Tom (the oldest) and Tim (the
youngest.) As a youngster Terry had a somewhat inauspicious introduction to bridge.
“Watching my parents and their friends sit around a table for hours, speaking a language I didn’t
understand, smoking, drinking and sometime yelling at each other wasn’t exactly my idea of
fun!” When Tom learned the game it was pretty natural for Terry to be “drafted” into playing, as
now there were four. Tom is also a fine player and when Terry was a student at UC Davis the
two of them entered a nationwide bridge contest and walked away with first place and an
expense-paid cruise for two to the Mexican Riviera. Terry started his bridge teaching career
while going to college. He and Tom initially teamed together playing at the games of Lois and
Jim Bachelor. (His mother, Nell, was a close friend of Lois.) Games directed by Carl Highley
were also attended by Terry and Tom.

He began directing twenty years ago, sixteen years full time. His twelve (or so) bridge cruises
have taken him and some of his players to Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, Panama Canal, Europe and
the Caribbean.
His hobbies include watching competitive Figure Skating, (he was present when Nancy Kerrigan
had her unfortunate incident, as he was part of the media, writing for a figure skating
publication), tennis – occasionally at the community center; he also enjoys traveling and
dabbling in Horticulture.

The 2007 Fall North American Bridge Championships are being staged in San Francisco next
November, and early this year Terry was asked by our District if he would be willing to serve as
Intermediate and Novice Chairman for the huge tournament (some 15,000 tables are expected
over the eleven days.) He gladly accepted, “It’s an exciting challenge for me, and I’m happy to
be able to give back to the game which has given me so much. I want to make sure they have a
great time at our Nationals.” Over the years, Terry has represented District 21 a total of five
times in Grand National Teams and North American Pairs competitions, an accomplishment few
in our District have equaled. In 2000 he represented the USA in team competition at the World
Championships in Bermuda. This year he and his three teammates traveled to Chicago to
compete for the national honors in Flight A of the GNT’s, but unfortunately they were knocked
out early in the competition.

As we all know, Terry received the honor of Gold Life Master recently. It is “totally apropos”
that he achieved this distinction at the annual Sonora Sectional (October) in that his family has
had a cabin for many years in nearby Twain Harte and he supports this tourney every year! He
states, “It was fantastic to earn my Gold Life Master in Sonora, playing with a brand new
partner, Frank Lowenthal of Pleasanton.” They had first overalls in all three open events!!!

Terry is a Virgo, as exhibited by his fastidiousness and good organizational skills! Nearly a half
a century old, he still has plenty of years for many !!! points (and the other kind of points also.)
We wish him well. The final accolade is an -

                              ODE TO TERRY T.
                              He bakes us cakes.
                              He whips up dips.
He makes us lots of yummies
                              That find their way, I’d
                              Surely say, right in our
                              Hungry Tummies!
                              He’s rarely cross,
                              But he’s the boss
                              When things need be
                              Corrected; he’s always
                              There and always fair
                              In games that he’s directed!
                              Glad are we he didn’t
                              Be a Scotland Yard Inspector,
                              ‘Cause then, we’d never
Get to say, “HI FAVORITE DIRECTOR!”

Great Western Holiday STaC XV, December 4–10

The 15th edition of our Western Conference’s Holiday STaC week is upon us, with silver point
games galore! Pairs games will be held at all of our clubs except the Monday morning game at
the Fremont Duplicate Bridge Center and the Tuesday evening game at the Redwood Bridge
Club. Put another way, you’ll find silver point games at Redwood on Monday afternoon, the
Marina BC on Tuesday morning, the Fremont Lake Elizabeth Easybridge Club on Tuesday
evening (20-masterpoint limit), the Lakeside BC on Wednesday morning, the Ashland BC on
Thursday morning, the Weekes Park Easybridge Club (30-masterpoint limit) on Thursday
afternoon, and the Fremont DBC on Saturday afternoon. Remember to bring an extra $1.50 to
each game, to defray the ACBL silver point sanction fee.

Holiday Party Time!

STaC week will end in a big way, with a unit-sponsored, two single-session pairs game on
Sunday, December 10 at the Marina Community Center in San Leandro. We hope you’ll play in
both games, but, again, they’re single-session games, and you can, if you choose, play in only the
morning or afternoon game. The first game will begin at 10:30 and the second around 3:30. The
games will have the usual STaC stratification, and if attendance warrants, we’ll offer both open
and Non-Life Master sections at both games.

Come hungry! Between the two games a catered hot meal will be served, and it’ll be
complimentary (that’s free!) for all current (paid-up!) South County ACBL members. (Other
players will be asked to pay a mere $6 for the meal.) And the benefits of belonging to our unit
don’t end there: table fees for each of Sunday’s two games will be only $3 for Unit 500 members
(plus the required $1.50 ACBL sanction fee for each game). What a deal!

In order to help us know how many victuals our caterer should prepare, we ask that you sign up
for the meal (and the games!) by Monday, December 4. You’ll find sign-up sheets at all of our
club games. And if you need help finding a partner for this unit STaC extravaganza, please call
Issi Stefani (who’s our chairperson for this event) at 925-485-3285, or Terry Terzian (who’ll be
directing both games) at 510-581-4424.

South County Annual Membership Meeting

Yep, it’s that time of year again—time to elect new members to our unit board and to conduct
other unit business. All of this will be done—and briefly!— at our unit holiday STaC party.
Please come with your ideas and your vote.

Members on the Move
Welcome to new ACBL and Unit 500 members Valerie Byrne and Bob Hamilton, both of Castro
Valley, and LaVonne and Les Addison and Sally Silver of Fremont. Bob and Valerie have been playing
in our unit for several months (most recently in our Easybridge games and the Saturday Fremont DBC
game at Centerville) and have been doing so well (indeed: in mid-November they placed first N–S in the
Saturday afternoon game) that they decided to give their fast-accumulating masterpoints a home.
LaVonne and Les have been steady players (and successful: see the next section) in my Easybridge games
and may soon dip a toe or two into the waters of our open games.

Moving up the Masterpoint Ladder

Helen Wood has become a Regional Master (100+ masterpoints), and LaVonne and Les
Addison are now Junior Masters (5+ MPs). Congratulations to you all!

Fremont Monday Game in Danger of Closing

As many of you know, since September the Fremont Duplicate Bridge Center has been without a
regular director for its Monday game. The current manager of the center and I have been trying
to find a regular director for that game, so far without luck. If no qualified person is found (or
steps forward) within the next few weeks, the Monday morning game in Fremont will come to an
end, after many, many years of existence (it's one of the oldest continuous games in the Bay
Area). The Saturday afternoon game will continue as before, under my direction.

In the Money on the Tournament Trail by Jim Solomon

Note: The information that appears in this column is gleaned from my reviewing the results for sectional
and regional tournaments in District 21, as well as the occasional national championship. To make sure
that I haven’t overlooked your name (and performance), or to let me know of tournaments that you played
in outside of our district, please get in touch with me, at LSJ63@ yahoo.com or 510-538-9889.

East Bay Fall Sectional, Holy Redeemer Center, Oakland, October 20–22

In the Friday afternoon open pairs, Nancy Boyd placed second overall and added a nifty 5.25 silver
points to her masterpoint stash. Gary Peck and Kunio Okui were third in strat B overall. In the N–S
direction of section B, Zac Cohen was third in the A strat, and Virginia Herring and Vince De Pasquale
were third in strat B. In the Non-Life Masters pairs that afternoon, June Cost and Bill Beeson finish
second OA, and Amy Wu and J.T. were third. Gary and Zac paired up in the Friday evening open pairs
and tied for fifth OA; in the same event Charlie and Ann Conrad were first in the C strat, and Virginia
and Vince were first in B and fourth in A in section B N–S.

In Saturday morning’s open pairs, our new but already highly esteemed Table Talk editor, Carla Francis,
placed second OA in the C strat and sixth in B. Marty Holtz was second in B in section B E–W. In the
morning NLM pairs, Tina Chen and Ann Conrad tied for third in the E strat; Mary and Mike Lubin
placed third in F and fifth in E.

In the B/C/D flight of Sunday’s stratified Swiss team competition, Bin Liang’s team placed third in strat
C and tied for sixth in B.

Santa Clara Valley Fall Sectional, San Jose Masonic Temple, October 27–29

In the Friday evening flight B/C/D pairs, Bin Liang claimed second place OA. In the Saturday evening
side game, Nancy Boyd was third OA. In the A/X flight of the Sunday Swiss teams competition, Jim
Kelsey and Chuck Wong’s team finished second in the X strat and tied for fourth OA; Steve Chen’s
team tied for third in X and sixth in A.

B–E–R Fall Sectional, El Cerrito Community Center, November 4–6

As you’ve been reading, Zac Cohen has been frequenting the area tournaments lately, and he’s been
doing well. He continued in his winning ways with a first place overall in the Friday evening open pairs
of the B–E–R fall sectional. In the A/X flight of the Saturday afternoon open pairs, Nancy Boyd placed
fourth E–W, and in that evening’s open pairs she finished sixth OA (third N–S).

Chuck Wong was on the team that won the open Swiss on Sunday (worth 8.50 silver points), winning
seven of their eight matches and amassing 113 victory points (but only one more than the second-place
team; talk about a squeaker!). Dave and Joyce Denyven were on the team that placed fourth in strat B.
Jim Harper was on the team that won the Sunday afternoon 299er Swiss.

Diablo Valley Fall Sectional, Iron Horse Middle School, San Ramon, November 11–12

The premier pair event of this tournament was the two-session Joe Knox open pairs on Saturday. In the
morning session Terry Terzian was third in the E–W direction of section A, and Chuck Wong tied for
sixth E–W in section B. After the lunch break Terry and Chuck both had a 61.77% games (but they
weren’t partners!). This placed Terry first N–S in his section and seventh overall for the event; Chuck
ended up ninth OA.

In the Saturday morning side game, Darlene Mayhew placed fifth OA in the B strat. In the afternoon
Bob Hamilton and Valerie Byrne snagged second OA in strat F and third OA in strat E of the 199er
pairs, and Amy Wu was fourth in strat D N–S.

The Sunday Swiss teams competition in this tournament is bracketed rather than stratified, and the large
turnout of 64 teams was spread among seven brackets. Chuck Wong’s team came in first in bracket 2,
each member earning 10.27 silver points, and the all-South County team of Jim Kelsey, Jey Jeyakumar,
Venkat Sivasankaran, and Terry Terzian. Steve Chen’s team came in third in the highest bracket,
worth 10.16 silver. Bill Hodges was on a team that tied for second in bracket 4, and Kevin Schoenfeld
and Mary Ramos paired on the fourth-place team in that bracket.

The Fremont Lake Elizabeth Easybridge Club continues to offer instruction and games to
players who are new to bridge (or who know something about bridge but want to learn
modern bridge). And we continue to have fun doing it! Come share in all of that with us on
Tuesday nights.

We have a special game coming up on December 19: our holiday party. It’ll also be a Club
Championship game, with extra masterpoints. On December 26 and January 2 the club will be
closed. We’ll resume our games on January 9—and begin a new series of lessons.

December Special Games and Important Announcements:
Saturday’s game on December 9th will be part of the Western Conference STaC. There will
be an extra $1.50 per person charge for this event, but overall finishes bring big masterpoint
awards.

Monday, December 18th, is a very special game. First, it’s our Holiday Club Championship.
It’s also our last game of 2006, as the Centerville Community Center will be closing for
renovations later that week. Sadly, it’s also the Fremont Duplicate Bridge Center’s last Monday
session. Thanks are owed to Doug Burke and Jim Kelsey for their help as acting directors, and
thank you to all the loyal Monday players. The club will reopen on Saturday, January 13, 2007,
and will operate only one session per week, our Saturday afternoon game.

A Note about the RBC Tuesday night game (7:15PM):
Attendance has been poor for quite some time on Tuesday nights and the
game is in serious danger of closing. This month, I will run the
following special games, if a minimum of 3 tables indicates to me in
advance, they would like to play:

December 5: Western Conference STac- Silver points
        December 12: Club Championship
        December 19 Charity Club Championship

If you would like to play in any of these Special games, Please contact
me at least 24 hours in advance. With at least 3 tables of pre-
registration, I will direct the game; otherwise, I will not. A
decision will be made at the end of the month as to the future of
Tuesday night bridge at Redwood.

Thank you.

The Weekes Park Easybridge Club continues to offer instruction and games to players who are
new to bridge (or who know something about bridge but want to learn modern bridge). And
we continue to have fun doing it! Come share in all of that with us on Thursday afternoons.

We have a special game coming up on December 14: our holiday party. It’ll also be a Club
Championship game, with extra masterpoints. On December 28 and January 4 the club will be
closed. We’ll resume our games on January 11—and begin a new series of lessons.
