The three-piece rectangle
This activity will help your child to recognise quadrilaterals such as parallelograms, trapezia and
kites.

You will need card, paper, a pencil, a ruler and scissors.
   • Cut a rectangle from card.
   • Make sure opposite sides are the same length.
   • Mark any point on one side.
   • Use a ruler to draw lines from this point to the two vertices on the
     opposite side.
   • Cut along the lines to make three pieces.

   • Investigate the different shapes you can make by joining any two pieces.
For example, can you make a triangle, a trapezium, or other
     quadrilaterals?
   • On your paper draw each shape you make and label it with its name.
   • Now investigate the shapes you can make by joining all three pieces. Can
you make a parallelogram and a trapezium? Can you make different
     pentagons?

If you have time, investigate the
shapes you can make with these
three pieces, based on two identical
squares.
