Origins of the Word Realia

         Latin Origin (Language of Science,
                    research and philosophy)
                            Some meanings

     – Objects of any origin used to illustrate
          vocabulary and structure in the L2
             – Objects from Real Life used in
                      classroom instructions.
           – Objects of The Material Culture.
Meaning of Realia in The field of
      translation studies

     “It means signs, words and, more
       precisely, those words signifying
         objects of the material culture,
          especially pertaining to a local
                                 culture.”
Definition of Realia by two Bulgarian
    Scholars (Vlahov and Florin)
                        “Words (and composed
                   expressions) of the popular
                         language representing
                     denominations of objects,
                 concepts, typical phenomena
               of a given geographic place, of
                     material life or of social –
                Historical peculiarities of some
                people, nation, country, tribe,
              that for local or historical color;
               these words do not have exact
                 matches in other languages”.
    Some Characteristics of Realia in The
       Field of Translation Studies.

   Realia is related to the
    Real World.

   It excites interest about
    the unknown enviroment
    realia represents and
    encourages exploration.
What is meant by Virtual Realia?
         In language teaching, they
            are digitized objects and
               items from the target
          culture which are brought
          into the classroom as aids
                and used to simulate
                   spoken or written
               language production.

   Realia demands from Translators:
       A peculiar attitude

       To be aware of when to transcribe,
        partially preserve or substitue
        words for lexical units.
       To realice that some words do not
        exist in other people, countries
        and places.
