Original Research Abstracts: This session will consist of short oral presentations (12 minutes) of original scientific studies (basic, applied, clinical) in animal or comparative dermatology / internal medicine and surgery. Presentations will be given in the Free communication Session of the meeting Clinical Abstracts: This session will consist of short oral presentations time (10-12 minutes) of interesting case reports or clinical studies. Presentations will be given in the Free communication Session. Posters: This session will consist of reports in poster format of investigative and clinical studies. The size of the poster boards will be 90cm x 120cm. The posters will be available for viewing from Friday evening (Dec. 11) until Sunday (Dec. 13) Afternoon. Studies submitted should NOT have been presented at a national or international meeting prior to the 2009 AMAMS. Abstracts submitted for all sessions should adhere strictly to the format guidelines for the AMAMS (see attached guidelines and example abstract). The abstracts must include the final results of the study. Incomplete abstracts or failure to follow the format will lead to rejections of the paper without review. Each abstract will be evaluated blindly by three members of the program committee and scored based on design, originality, and relevance to dermatology. The abstracts will be ranked according to score and selected for presentation in the session requested, based on available space. All presentations are required to be prepared utilizing Power Point and copied to a CD ROM or memory stick for LCD projection. Kodochrome projection will not be available. Presentation Competition: Two best presenters in each preliminary committee will be voted by the judgments after oral presentation and will be awarded as “BEST PRESENTATION” during closing ceremony. **** Programme Committee encourage every submitter apply for the competition. Please refer to the accompanying Author’s Instructions, Format for Abstracts, Abstract Submission form and sample abstract for additional information. Deadline: The deadline for reception of all abstracts is Oct. 20, 2009. Material must be received by email (attachment) in the proper format by 12:00 PM. There will be no extensions for this deadline. 2. Submissions: Abstracts may be submitted as an email attachment (MS Word preferred) with the abstract submission form. ALL the abstract including dermatology/internal medicine/surgery E-mail to: nagata@ra2.so-net.ne.jp 3. Conflicts of interest: In accordance with ethical guidelines pertaining to scientific meetings, a notation will be made in the Abstracts Section of the Proceedings if there are any abstracts to be presented by authors who may have a conflict of interest. A conflict of interest includes, but is not limited to, any significant financial interest in a company, product, or procedure that is mentioned in an abstract or presentation to be given at the meeting. If the author or presenter feels that such a conflict exists, the box provided on the Abstract Submission Form should be checked, so that the conflict of interest may be noted in the Supplement. Checking this box in no way affects whether an abstract is accepted for presentation. Format for Abstracts [ALL SESSIONS] (Research, Clinical, Resident, and Poster Abstracts) A. Page Format: margins: 1 inch (2.5 cm) top, bottom, left and right, single spaced; laser printer quality- 1 page maximum (including title, authors, affiliation, abstract body, sponsorship, table) B. Style: 1. Title: Bold, Times New Roman, 12 pts, centered, no capital letters except proper names or product names. (Leave a blank line between the title and authors) 2. Authors: - include all authors - format: initials followed by last name only, no degrees (ex: J. Skin, V. Derm ) - Times New Roman, 12 points, not bold, centered - Affiliation numbered in superscript following last name (leave a blank line between author and affiliation). 3. Affiliation: - List affiliation of all authors in order following superscript -Name of department, School/Institution, City, State, Country (do not include address) -Times New Roman, 12 points, not bold, centered (leave a blank line between affiliation and the abstract body). 4. Body: For original studies, the body of the abstract should contain the study objective, a brief statement of methods, statement of results, and conclusions. For Case Reports, the body should contain background, objectives, relative data, case summary, and conclusions. Results stated in the abstracts must be complete (though concise) and final. It is not acceptable to state “results will be discussed.” Results presented in oral or poster format must match those presented in the abstract. A. Times New Roman, 12 point, single spaced, right margin not justified, begin with the word “Abstract:” in bold, followed by the text. B. Spell out any abbreviation in full on the first mention, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. C. Statistics: Describe statistical method and computer program used and if space permits, discuss eligibility of experimental subjects, give details about randomization and blinding, identify numbers of observations, treatment complications, and losses to observation (e.g. dropouts). D. Products listed, include the manufacturer’s name and address. Example: modified cyclosporine (Atopica: Novartis Animal Health, Greensboro, NC) E. Breed names are adjectives not nouns (ie: Siamese cat, not “Siamese”), and should only be capitalized if proper name (ie: German shepherd dog, not German Shepherd Dog). F. Numbers up to and including 10 are spelled out unless associated with time (days, weeks, months). Use “h” for hours, “min” for minutes, and “sec” for seconds. G. Data may be summarized to conserve text such as “3/9 dogs”. H. Drug doses are reported as mg kg-1 not as mg/kg and lab data should be reported in IU units. 5. Sponsorship: Identify corporate sponsorship of the study or drugs supplied, separated from the body of the abstract by one line space. 6. Table: only one small table is permitted, provided that it does not contain more than 5 rows and columns. Tables will be removed (not be included) in the abstracts when published in Veterinary Dermatology. 7. When finished with your abstract, count the words to ensure you have not exceeded the prescribed limit. Free Communications abstracts (original research, clinical, resident, and posters) may not exceed 250 words (EXCLUDING title, author list, affiliations, and sponsorship statement). Abstracts exceeding these limits will be returned to the author unreviewed. 8. References are not to be included in the abstract **EXAMPLE ** FORMAT FOR 2007 ** EXAMPLE** Mode of action on SACCHACHITIN P10 (SAP10) for traumatic and burn wound of pets C. Chen1,2, C.H. Su2 2 Taipei Veterinary Dermatology & Allergy, Taipei, Taiwan Graduate Institute of Biomedical Materials, Taipei Medical University, Taipei, Taiwan 1 Abstract: The aim of the study was to develop a new type wound dressing derived from SACCHACHITIN (SA) to meet the demands of pets. SAP10 paste was composed of 10% SA and 5% Carboxymethyl cellulose sodium salt (CMC). Animal models were employed to confirm the effectiveness of wound healing enhancement of SAP10. Skin biopsy full thickness excision and full thickness thermal burn were created on the back of Wistar rats with punch hole of 6 mm in diameter and a hot plate in 20x20 mm2, respectively. The wounds were covered with SAP-10, 5%CMC, BESCHITIN-W (a commercial product of chitin membrane) and the uncovered control. The size of wound area, histological changes, growth factors and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) activity were measured in the 8 mm in diameter punched samples taken from the original wounds on day 0, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 14 after injury. SAP10 accelerated wound healing by decreasing approximate 40% wound area compared to CMC as well as the untreated controls. SAP10 induced a growth factor increase including PDGF, TGF-β1 and VEGF measured by ELISA at 2, 8 and 4 days post injury, respectively, when the untreated control stayed unchanged at low level. In the same time the activities of MMP-9 and the presumed MMP-2 activities measured by zymography were fond to be suppressed at 8 days after injury. The results indicated that SAP10 might inactivate MMPs with the activation of growth factors. These lead to an early termination of inflammation stage and consequently, accelerated wound healing. Similar patterns for SAP10 had found in the burned wounds of rats and dogs except a delay wound healing for approximate 7 days compared to that of the traumatic wounds.
