Executive Summary
The results of the 2004 Alumni Survey are described in the following report1. The 2004 survey
involved graduates of the classes of 1994-95, 1997-98, 2000-01, and 2003-04. The following points
are highlights from the survey responses.

          Over one-fourth of the 2003-04 graduates responded to the survey. Over 20 percent of the
           1994-95, 1997-98, and 2000-01 graduates responded.

          All of the 1994-95, 1997-98, and 2000-01 responding graduates were employed. Ninety-nine
           percent of 2003-04 graduates were employed.

          Eighteen percent of the 2003-04 employed graduates learned about their current positions
           from Career Services.

          Seventy-one percent of 2003-04 graduates were employed in a field related to their UE
           education.

          Job fairs, internships, and resume/correspondence assistance were the most frequently
           used career services.

          Fifty-five percent of 2003-04 alumni reported studying abroad while at UE.

          Seventeen percent of the 2003-04 graduates were enrolled in graduate school.

          One-half of responding alumni reside in Indiana.

          Forty-seven percent of graduates participated in religious, social, or service organizations in
           the past three years.

          About 25 percent of the 1997-98, 2000-01, and 2003-04 graduates regularly attended
           artistic or cultural events, with 41 percent of the 1994-95 graduates having done so.

          The following statements were rated progressively higher by each of the four reporting
           classes, from 1994-95 to 2003-04: “I have become more aware of and responsive to issues of
           race, religion, gender, class and nationality,” “I have developed critical thinking and
           organization skills,” “I have increased my self-esteem and respect from others,” and “I am
           willing to consider work or study abroad.”

          Ninety-nine percent of graduates were proud to be alumni of the University of Evansville.

Overview
Every year the Office of Institutional Research, in cooperation with the Office of Assessment, the
Office of Alumni and Parent Relations, and the Office of Career Services and Cooperative Education,
conducts a survey of alumni from the prior academic year, three years prior, six years prior, and nine
years prior. Alumni are able to respond via a mailed paper survey or online. The following results
are from the 2004 Alumni Survey, in which alumni from 2003-04, 2000-01, 1997-98, and 1994-95
were surveyed.
Response Rates
The table below displays the number of respondents and the response rates for the four classes that
were surveyed in 2004. Over one-fourth of the 2003-04 graduating class responded, while between
20 and 24 percent of the 1994-95, 1997-98, and 2000-01 classes responded.

Employment
Graduates were asked to provide the University with information regarding their current employment
situation. Of the respondents who provided such information, 100 percent of the 1994-95, 1997-98,
and 2000-01 classes were employed full-time, part-time, or self-employed. Ninety-nine percent of
the 2003-04 class was employed. Seventy-one percent of 2003-04 graduates were employed in a
field related to their UE education, while 85 percent of 1997-98 graduates were employed in a related
field. Thirty-four percent of graduates’ employers were involved in international business operations.
Regarding annual salary, over one-half of 2003-04 graduates made over $30,000; over one-half of
2000-01 graduates made over $36,000; one-half of 1997-98 graduates made over $45,000; and over
one-half of 1994-95 graduates made over $50,000. Eighteen percent of 2003-04 employed graduates
learned about their positions from Career Services. The majority of graduates had previous work
experience in the fields of their current positions.

Career Services
Job fairs, internships, and resume/correspondence assistance were the most frequently used career
services by alumni when they were students at UE. Co-op experiences and the part-time job board
were among the least used career services.

Over 40 percent of 1994-95 and 1997-98 alumni reported that they had studied abroad while at UE.
One-half of the 2000-01 and 2003-04 alumni reported studying abroad.

Graduate School
Seventeen percent of the 2003-04 graduates reported that they were currently attending graduate
school. One-half of 1994-95 graduates reported having already earned a graduate degree, while
another eight percent were currently enrolled in graduate school. Indiana University, the University
of Evansville, and the University of Southern Indiana were the most frequently reported graduate
institutions as either their institutions of current enrollment or the institutions from which they earned
graduate degrees.

Activities
Alumni were asked to report how UE had influenced them to engage in a variety of activities in the
past three years. Highlights from the responses include:
     The percentage of alumni who had participated in political activities or interest groups
        increased from 15 percent of 1997-98 graduates to 17 percent of 2003-04 graduates.
     Only 24 percent of 2003-04 alumni had visited an archaeological excavation, site or art
        museum compared to 32 percent of 2000-01 alumni.
     Almost one-half of the 2000-01 graduates had participated in short courses, workshops or
        conferences, while only 36 percent of the 2003-04 graduates had done so.
     Eight percent of the 2003-04 graduates had participated in an art exhibition, the highest of all
        four reporting classes.
     The percentage of alumni who had participated in community programs or civic organizations
        declined over the four classes, from 38 percent of 1994-95 graduates to 28 percent of 2003-04
        graduates.
     Approximately two percent of the 2003-04 class reported that they had maintained an art
        studio.
     Forty-two percent of the 2003-04 graduating class had traveled internationally.
     The graduates reporting teaching a class or seminar declined from the 1994-95 class to the
        most recent graduating class, from 40 percent to 18 percent.
     About 25 percent of the 1997-98, 2000-01, and 2003-04 graduates regularly attended artistic
        or cultural events, while 41 percent of 1994-95 graduates had done so.

     The percentage of alumni who had participated in religious, social or service organizations
      declined over the four reporting classes, from 59 percent of 1994-95 graduates to 39 percent
      of 2003-04 graduates.
     While over 40 percent of the 1994-95, 1997-98, and 2000-01 graduates had taken a
      continuing education course, only 14 percent of the 2003-04 graduates had done so.
     The percentage of graduates who had participated in in-service training or continuing
      professional education declined over the four classes, from 53 percent of 1994-95 graduates to
      25 percent of 2003-04 graduates.
     The majority of all graduating classes had read a professional article.

Education Evaluation
Respondents were asked to rate the results of their UE educational experience on a five-point scale,
from strongly agree to strongly disagree. The ability to act as an effective team member was either
the highest or one of the highest rated items by all four classes. The lowest ranked item among the
four classes was job search preparation by the Office of Career Services and Cooperative Education.

The 2003-04 class rated most items higher than the other classes, except for the following:
    “I have been helped in my chosen career by my liberal arts and sciences education,”
    “I am as strongly prepared in graduate school as most individuals I have met with similar
      education and experience,”
    “I find my work rewarding,”
    “I am able to communicate effectively in the workplace,”
    “I have had career choices, options for career promotion or opportunities for graduate
      education,”
    “I have an awareness of European influences on American culture,”
    “I have an acceptance of people who are different than I,”
    “I have developed better health habits and physical fitness,” and
    “I have been adequately prepared by the Office of Career Services for the job search process.”

The following statements were rated progressively higher by each class, with the highest rating by the
most recent class of 2003-04:
    “I have become more aware of and responsive to issues of race, religion, gender, class and
       nationality,”
    “I have developed critical thinking and organization skills,”
    “I have increased my self-esteem and respect from others,” and
    “I am willing to consider work or study abroad.”

No single item was rated progressively worse over the four classes.
