SOC190.2 Feb 5, 2009 Excel Lab 2: More on Charts White Black Other Other 63 10 12 Mother&Father 29,225 3363 1170 Father & Stepmom 774 121 31 Mother & Stepdad 1711 393 52 Father 851 176 52 Mother 3865 1516 228 Male relative 103 40 10 Female relative 372 280 40 M&F relatives 713 304 46 Source: General Social Services, SDA archive: http://sda.berkeley.edu. First, put the above table into an excel spreadsheet (copy and paste). 1. 2. 3. 4. Create sums for all columns and rows. How many people total are in this survey? How many total lived with their mother only? What percentage of whites lived with a relative other than mom or dad? What percentage of blacks? Create a bar chart for question #3. To make charts: (see exercise #1) Enter the percentages into cells, with labels above them for race, and to the left for family household type Living arrangement Living with Mother & Father Living with other relatives White =29,225/(total whites) = ____/ total whites) Black 3,363/(total blacks) _____ / _____ answers (78% & 54%) 5. Now that you have a bar chart, what does it mean? What reasons do you know for this pattern? For Homework: I would like to see you familiar with the Survey Data Archive website on campus. a. go to sda.berkeley.edu b. Click on ‘Data Archive’ (left side) c. Click on the first of the data sets, GSS cumulative data set 1972-2006 d. On the left there is a window with a listing of variables. Explore these as you see fit. I’m going to suggest one, SPANKING, (under ‘Controversial social issues’ and then ‘Child discipline’) e. Clicking on the variable will automatically ‘populate’ the menu directly above. Click on VIEW to see the distribution Variable Selection: Help Selected: Copy to: Mode: Append Replace f. Now, choose a demographic variable, such as RACE, SEX, MARITAL, DEGREE or REGION. g. In the menu on the right side of the page enter SPANKING (or other variable that you want to understand) into the space for ROW h. Then enter the demographic variable in the space for COLUMN. i. I Percentaging should be checked for Column. Then click on RUN THE TABLE at the bottom of this menu. j. Present (make a bar graph) and interpret the results. SPANKING
