ABOUT THESE LOANS
The University of Melbourne is offering a new form of student assistance designed for students
who have reached the FEE-HELP Loan limit and can demonstrate financial need.
Student Financial Aid is responsible for administering the new scheme. There are two types of
loans available – secured and unsecured.
These loans are solely for the payment of fees where the FEE-HELP Loan limit has
been reached.
The maximum loan available in 2011 is $6,000. This will increase to $8,000 in 2012
The scheme is a temporary measure to assist students in financial need; the scheme is
not planned to continue beyond 2012. The University is investigating facilities (including
commercial loans) that students may be able to access from other sources in the future.
ELIGIBILITY
These loans are only for students enrolled in a degree or diploma course at the University of
Melbourne, who are eligible for FEE-Help but have reached the maximum allowed.
Eligible students - who already have short or long term loans through Student Financial Aid, CAN
also apply for this loan.
Loans are allocated primarily on a needs basis to students unlikely to be able to access alternative
forms of assistance (parental help, bank loans, etc). Loan funds available for allocation each year
are limited
SECURED LOANS
For students able to provide a suitable guarantor, the terms and conditions are similar to long term
loans currently available through Student Financial Aid; however, the maximum amount has been
increased to $6000.
NON SECURED LOANS
For students unable to provide a guarantor, a non secured loan is available. There will be an
establishment fee of 10% of the loan amount. The establishment fee does not need to be paid
upfront but can be deferred and repaid with the principal.
INTEREST RATES
No interest will be charged provided the agreed repayment schedule is met. The intention of the
University is that loans are interest free, however interest can be charged if the loan is in default.
REPAYMENTS
Repayments will commence after course completion and it is expected that loans be fully repaid
within two years.
APPROVAL OF LOANS AND APPEALS
All applications are considered sympathetically, but loan funds are limited and it is not always
possible to give full approval to every loan application. In regard to the approval of loans, the
decision of the Student Loan Fund Committee is final. However, if your initial application is not
approved, you do have the right to provide additional information to the Committee, in writing, and
to request a reconsideration of this decision.
