12th July 2009 Ordinary Sunday 15 (Year B)
Cringe Factor
When I was a kid I loved watching Westerns on a Sunday afternoon and re-enacting them with my mates. I always identified with the goodie - the hero of the story. No-one ever wanted to be the baddie. We can end up reading the Bible that way too. I want to cast myself as Peter (on one of his good days) not Judas or Ciaphas or Pilate. So when I was reading the passage from 2 Samuel 6 that’s set down for today, my natural inclination was to identify with David as he came into Jerusalem rejoicing, dancing and worshipping God. I certainly didn’t want to identify with the contemptuous Michal whom Samuel tells us despised David for his unrestrained worship and celebration. She cringed at his behaviour - his lack of decorum. If I’m honest about it though, I can be a lot more like Michal than I’d like to admit. I heard a true story a couple of
years ago about a man in Sydney who had stood almost every day for forty years in George Street seeking to reach people with the Gospel. His approach was to step out in front of people and ask them “Do you know Jesus? If you were to die today would you go to heaven?” When I see someone doing that kind of thing, I cringe. “What are you doing? That’ll never work. You’ll only put people off.” For forty years that man stood there on George Street, asking his questions and never once saw any fruit from his labours other than plenty of abuse and ridicule. I heard his story from a Baptist Pastor whose work took him all over the world. He’d first heard of this man four years earlier from a person who’d come to Christ after being confronted by this quirky old man in George Street in Sydney. The Pastor told that story in a sermon in a church in London and was approached by another person

who’d had the same experience. This happened again and again, in England, India, South East Asia, the US and even Perth. He decided he wanted to meet this amazing Christian servant and was able to track him down through some colleagues in Sydney. By then he was a very old man. He’d had to stop going to George Street earlier that year because he’d become too frail. He had never heard of a single person becoming a Christian as a result of his work but that day the
Pastor told him about the people he had met and the stories he had heard over the last four years and that he estimated that more than one million people had been directly or indirectly impacted for Christ by this man and his confronting questions. When the Pastor asked him why he had persisted for so long without ever seeing any fruit he said he simply did what he believed God wanted him to do. The man died only a few weeks later and when he heard his saviour say “well done, good and faithful servant” I don’t imagine anyone cringed. God be with you.
