      • Military: 1897, Minden, Germany, Prussia. As translated by Ann Hunter:
      It is the discharge paper for HANS HEINRICH LUKE. Unable to decipher,
      what his rank was. He was born on the 3rd of May, 1875 , in Lugde,
      County of Hörter. Stationed in Minden, Germany, Prussia, from October
      16th, 1895, until September 21st, 1897, in the 8th company of the
      Infantry Regiment Vogel von Falkenstein (7. Westphalia) #56. During his
      tour of duty he conducted himself well. Signed in Wesel, the 26th of
      September, 1897, by his captain and company commander.

      brother Aug Spelker in Greensburg, PA. Also his Petition states that he
      arrived in Pennsylvania on this date.

Apr 1902 - Dept of Interior sends letter to Atty General recommending criminal
proceedings against Catherine Bear, now Baird, wrt her claim for widow's
pension.
Mar 1903 The U.S. Attorney who investigated the case, in a letter to the Attorney
General, did not feel that the Government should be put to the expense of a
trial. "THe woman has remarried, is beyond middle age, is teh mother of a large
family, is poor and ignorant, and, above all is being prosecuted for a crime by
which she has profited nothing and by which the Government has lost nothing.
Taking evreything into consideration, I have a doubt as to our ability to convict
this woman which amounts almost to a belief that we cannot do so. But taking
the conviction as granted, I am confident that the Court, in view of the
circumstances, would not feel called upon to sentence her."
Jun 1905 - appears that this is when pension for Sanford Baird 1st approved.
1905-summer 1907 - Annie lived with Andrew and Mary Mitchell or they lived
with her because Sanford had left her. Annie referred to living with Grandma
Mitchell.
Summer 1907-Jan 1908 - Sanford returned and they settled their differences and
went again to house "keeping again."
Apr 1908 - He returned again and they moved to Hempsfield Twp until Nov
1908.
Nov 1908- 1910 - they lived in Alverton PA
Aug 1910 - Annie C states that Sanford left her at this time. In a later statement,
he said that he left her because "a disagreeable, unbareable, drunken, debased
woman, that she was not of good morals. And I believe cohabited with other
men, which I can prove by the following parties, if you wish to investigate: Mr
William Bowers... Mr Iziah Brown... Dr. Gilbert... and Mr. Charles Johnson.

Sep 1911 - Sanford defends his pension with statement listed Aug 1910 above.
The statement was not considered sufficient without corroboration.

Feb 1925 Conclusion of the special examiner was "Her ideas of morals may not
have been of the highest grade, but it does not appear that she has forfeited title
by misconduct since the soldier died. She is aged, bent over, and almost
repulsive in appearance. Recommendation:- For consideration"
Mar 1925 - Pension granted of $30/ month effective May 1924.
Jan 1927 - Annie died. Pension of $30/month dropped from rolls.

Note: In several statements he stated that her maiden name was Catherine
Claycom, although their marriage license and return states her parents are John
and Elizabeth Young. 4

      • He served in the military as a private in Company I, 54 Pennsylvania
      Military Infantry from 1 Jul 1863 to 17 Aug 1863. 4 He refers to it as the
      54 Regt Penna Emergency Militia (Call of Gov Curtin).

• He was employed from 1865 to 1897. 4 As stated in 1897 disability
claim:
From 1865-68: unable to do manual labor due to piles and diarrea
1868-1885: worked at farming, able to work 1/2 days work
1885: sick all winter and unable to do anything
1886: worked on a farm, able to work 1/4 time
winter 1886-87: sick all winter
Since, able to work 1/4 except last two years he was totally disabled.

• He served in the military as a private in Company I, 11 Pennsylvania
Volunteer Infantry from 12 Apr 1865 to 1 Jul 1865. 6 Enlisted at
Greensburg, PA on 12 Apr 1865 for one year. Physical description was 5' 6
3/4", hazzel eyes, brown hair and fair complexion. As of 13 Apr 1865 roll,
he was paid $33 1/3 bounty and was due $66 2/3. In the remarks "Gets
$530 Cash local bounty. April and July Company Muster Rolls indicate that
on 15 April he "in account with the U.S. turned in $543.00 to John Allison
Addl pay master U.S.A at Pittsburg, Pa."

Honorably discharged at Washington, D.C. Unit commanded by John
Kimble.
From Sep 1897 statement: During this tour of duty at Richmond, about 1
May 1865 he contracted catarrh and neuralgia in head due to very warm
weather and a great deal of hard marching in April 1865. Also, while his
company was laying in camp at Balds Cross Roads near Washington D.C.
in the State of Virginia during the end of May and the month of June
1865, he contracted piles also brought on by hard marching and
exposure. In 1898, refers to this as the march from Appomattox to
Washington D.C.

Two interesting statements by others in his company:
- His hands and feet were swollen and he asked the surgeon for a pass on
the ambulance. The surgeon replied the ambulances were crowded.
- I saw Sanford S. Baird after the surrender of Lee he was sitting on the
road side his feet was all swelled up that he could not walk and he also
was suffering badly with the piles and catarrh. I saw this on the road
between Richmond Va and Washington D.C.

• He had a residence Jul 1865 - Spring 1885 in Mt. Pleasant Twp,
Westmoreland Co., PA. 4

• He owned land on 2 Apr 1866 in Hempsfield, Westmoreland, PA. 7
Samuel Ruff sold the following land in Hempsfield to Sanford Beard for
$250: 6 acres which were part of a parcel granted to Andrew Ruff in 1827
and recorded in patent book H, Vol. 24, page 193.
He sold this land to Elizabeth Hunter, wife of Jacob Hunter 1 Feb 1867 for
$275.

• He appeared on the census in 1880 in Mount Pleasant, Westmoreland
Co., PA. 8 Appeared with wife Mary and children Harry, Annie, Cora and
Minnie.

• He had a residence in 1890 in West Overton, Westmoreland, PA. West
Overton is P.O. on Invalid Pension application.

• He appeared on the census in 1900 in Mount Pleasant, Westmoreland
Co., PA. 9 Appeared as head of household with daughter Annie and her
family.

• He worked as a coal miner "when able to work" in Apr 1902 in Mt.
Pleasant Twp, Westmoreland Co., PA.

• He was described physically in Apr 1902. 4 5'10", 145 pounds, hazel
eyes, brown hair, light complexion. Permanent marks of scars: Blue mark
on nose, small scar 2" above left eye, 8" scar on shin of left leg.

• He owned land in 1903 in Scottsdale, Westmoreland, PA. 10 Bate Baird,
formerly Kate Bear, and Sanford Baird sold to David Young of Mt.
Pleasant, for $1175, land described as lot No. 15 on Gas Company plan of
lots: having 40 feet frontage on Bridgeport Street and depth at uniform
width of 150 feet adjoinging lot no. 16 on the south and lot no. 14 on the
north.

This land had been transferred to Kate Bear 20 Apr 1893, recorded in
Deed Book vol 211, page 495.

• He had a residence from 1908 to 1922. 4 Admitted to the Central
Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Dayton,
Montgomery Co., Ohio from 29 Oct 1908-20 Jan 1909.

Statement from Central Branch 16 Aug 1911: In May, last, he applied for
readmission to the Western Branch N.H.D.V.S.National Military Home,
Kansas, and may be a member of that branch now. Admitted 22 May-8
Jun 1911, destination on discharge Greensburg, PA.

8 Nov 1921. Admitted to the Central Branch: Annotated Group 3.
31 Mar 1922 Transferred from Central Branch to Danville Branch
N.H.D.V.S. Group No. 3. Discharged 29 Jun 1922. Readmitted 27 Jul
1922-9 Nov 1922.

Notes: Available records do not show whether he was in the Home during
periods when he was a member.
After 1920, when not in the Soldier's Home he lived with Harry and Annie
and their families more than he did with the other children. She lived at
White Station, Indiana Co.

was a laborer at the coke works. Number of weeks in past year out of
work states 52.
