How does the infrastructure work?                                          60 months

The CREW federation is built starting from existing testbeds at four
different physical locations:
• A heterogeneous ISM test environment at IBBT incorporating IEEE
    802.11, IEEE 802.15.1, IEEE 802.15.4, USRP software radios;
• A licensed cognitive radio testbed (including TV bands) at TCD that is
    based on the IRIS reconfigurable radio platform and the USRP;
• A wireless sensor network test environment at TUB incorporating
    Tmote Sky and eyesIFXv2 sensor nodes, Wi-Spy spectrum
    analyzers, USRP software radios and BEE2 FFGA platforms;
• A LTE cellular test environment at TUD incorporating a complete
    LTE-equivalent base station infrastructure and SDR mobile user
                                               In addition to this, advanced sensing platforms developed by IMEC and TCF will be integrated
                                               at several locations in the CREW federated platform, enabling high-sensitivity detection and
                                               identification of interferences.

                                               CREW will physically and virtually federate components by linking together software and
                                               hardware entities from different partners using a standardized API, realizing advanced
                                               cognitive sensing functionality. In addition, the CREW federation will establish a
                                               benchmarking framework, enabling experiments under controlled and reproducible test
                                               conditions and providing methodologies for automated performance analysis, allowing a fair
                                               comparison between different cognitive concepts or between subsequent developments. Data
                                               sets created under benchmarked conditions according to a common data structure enable the
                                               emulation of CREW components in other experimental or simulation environments.

                                               What can be tested and how?
                                               The CREW facilities and federation allows the experimental validation of cognitive radio &
                                               cognitive networking concepts for the following usage scenarios:
                                               • Radio environment sensing for cognitive radio spectrum sharing: focus of this usage
                                                  scenario is to match the federated sensing hardware, the XCVR API and novel sensing
                                               • Horizontal resource sharing between heterogeneous networks in ISM band: this usage
                                                  scenario will investigate techniques for advanced resource sharing in typical
                                                  home/office/public building environments, densely populated with various wireless ISM
                                                  band devices;
                                               • Cooperation in heterogeneous networks in licensed bands: this usage scenario will focus
                                                  on cooperation in heterogeneous networks in licensed bands;
                                               • Robust Cognitive Sensor Networks: the main objective of this usage scenario is the
                                                  investigation of the robustness of cognitive radio solutions in cognitive Sensor Networks
                                                  (CNSs) in order to achieve a certain QoS, while ensuring non-interference;
                                               • Impact of cognitive networking in primary cellular Systems: this usage scenario will
                                                  integrate sensing agents use in an LTE cellular environment, which operates as primary

                                               The CREW platform offers 3 modes of operation:
                                               • Mode 1 - Individual CREW testbed usage: this mode offers the common CREW portal with
                                                 clear and uniform information about access and usage of each testbed, usage scenarios,
                                                 feedback on user experience & results
                                               • Mode 2 - Single CREW heterogeneous testbed usage: this modes allows physically
                                                 hosting of nodes from one testbed in another, hence creating new nodes from
                                                 combinations of CREW hardware/software components
                                               • Mode 3: Multiple sequential CREW testbed usage: this mode enables the capturing of
                                                 data/behaviours from one CREW testbed and replay for emulation or post-processing
                                                 purposes on a second CREW testbed

                                               Usage Information
Future Internet Research and Experimentation

                                               The basic CREW federation aims to be operational at the end of the first year for external use.
                                               Through two open calls (of which the first call be organized near the end of year 1 and the
                                               second call near the end of year 2) external experimenters will be attracted leading to an open
                                               and demand-driven expansion of the federation and its usage.
