The University of South Dakota established the Missouri
River Institute to develop and promote research,
education, and public awareness related to the natural
and cultural resources of the Missouri River Basin.

The 59-mile segment of the MNRR is a braided stream environment bordered by a reservoir
  environment on the upper end and a channelized river environment on the lower end .

What does the MRI do?


Research:

• Promote interdisciplinary research
• Contribute faculty, student, equipment, and funding
  resources

Education:

• New education opportunities for river studies at USD

Outreach:

•Promote understanding of and interaction with the river
Who is the MRI?
MRI utilizes a diversity of expertise at
the University of South Dakota
Biology -- riverine ecosystems, aquatic ecology.

Earth Science & SD Geological Survey -- river geomorphology, geology, and
sedimentation.

History -- cultural and political history of the Missouri River.

Contemporary Media and Journalism – communicating water resources issues to
stakeholder groups and increasing public understanding of science.

Anthropology -- cultural history and artifacts in the Missouri River Basin.

Chemistry -- analytical chemistry; research of water sampling techniques.

School of Law -- water law and policy issues in the Missouri River Basin.

School of Education -- development of K-12 education, teacher education, and education outreach.

School of Business -- economic analysis of ecosystem recovery costs and sedimentation solutions.

Computer Science -- website design and advanced website programming techniques.

MRI -- graduate and undergraduate research assistants to conduct river research.
MRI collaborates with a variety of other institutions
