PrinCiPal’s message

Dear Parents, Students, Community,
With only two months underway, the momentum of the year is already racing along!
Thanks so much to all the generous parents who donated supplies, paper, and other
goods to our teachers at Back-to-School Night! The turnout of parents and students was
inspiring. And speaking of incredible turnouts, this year’s Nightmare Haunted House
not only earned a very impressive rating (see http://www.hauntedbay.com/reviews/
SVHS2007.shtml), with only a three day run, the Nightmare spooked a record number
of little goblins. And the profits go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Congratulations Nightmare Crew!
All students are required to conduct 60 hours of community service, in order to fulfill graduation
requirements. While this requirement is often perceived as a challenge to students, our students rise to this
challenge in the scope and variety of contributions that they make to their community. Some students weigh
into this process that they accumulate far more than minimum required number of hours. One restriction we
apply is a limit of 15 hours towards the same purpose. This limitation is designed to insure that students are
engaged in a variety of experiences. If your student is challenged in identifying community service projects,
have them check by the Career Center. We post a variety of pre-approved projects and have suggestions on
other possible projects to get started. If your student has not yet gotten started on Community Service, the
Career Center is a great place to begin. And IB students have 150 hours of a combined Community-Action-
Service. See Mr. Crawford for more details on this requirement.
Have you been infected with Falcon Fever yet? Falcon Spirit has been steadily growing this year. And you
can join in at the wind down of the Fall Season sports. Our Falcon athletes have been turning in incredible
performances in Cross Country, Ladies Tennis, Ladies Golf, Ladies Volleyball, and Football. November brings
playoffs and end-of-season tournaments. Put on your Maroon and Gold and join the excitement!
Is the family car getting a little weary? Check out the raffle opportunity to win a brand new 2007 Subaru
Outback. Tickets are on sale from Falcon Frenzy club members, or in the office. Get yours before the
November 12 Drawing! There are a limited number of 12,750 tickets that will be sold.
This month of school has been marred by numerous serious student illnesses. While we hope such illnesses
never befall any of our students or parents, life has a habit of providing such challenges. Typically, when a
student is absent due to an illness, teachers allow as many days as the students was absent to make up the
work. But your student can keep up by checking the teacher’s homework website, or communicating with
the teacher via email to get assignments. These strategies will reduce your student’s recovery time upon
return to school. Under more serious illnesses, short-term independent study may provide an alternative.
A specific request and Doctor’s requirement for extended absence is required. Under the most serious and
extended illnesses, Home and Hospital will provide for a certificated teacher to deliver and assist in providing
instruction. We take your student’s success as our priority. Regular attendance is the most likely path towards
achieving success. Please join us towards this endeavor.
November will bring some important events to anticipate and participate. Career panels will engage Juniors
to explore and consider career options during U.S. History and HOTA courses. The Parent’s Club will sponsor
“Myths about Getting into College on November 1. Cabrillo College and Career Night planning is underway,
as well as Counselor’s 10th grade counseling events for students and parents. CORE is a new program to be
launched this year in lieu of NCBI. CORE is a program geared to increase our student’s respect and tolerance
for diversity. This program is delivered to Freshman and Juniors. A summary of information will be sent home
soon. For more information, contact Kelly Reiner or Jon Tiffany for a program overview. And just as we close
for the Thanksgiving holidays, the second 6 week grading period closes. Eligibility is announced following
Thanksgiving. The imperative for your students to keep up on their studies remains a priority.
So hang on tight, as the summer gives way to fall and closes in on winter, there is as much happening as ever.
Honored to be your Principal,
Gregg Gunkel

 greetings from tHe svHs library!
Things are winding down from the beginning of the school year rush so we can breath and let you know
a little bit about what is going on at the library. Two librarians are here to serve your students, teachers
and staff at SVHS. The morning librarian is Donna Potts and the afternoon librarian is Cathi Miezio.
We are currently in the midst of clearing prior year text and circulation from student’s accounts. All
students were told as they checked out texts for this year if they still had texts on their accounts from
previous years. We also sent out a bill at the end of September to their home address if the account still
remained open. Announcements have been made periodically and if I see the student in the library, I let
them know. We still have 61 students with balances due. Those students will not receive a progress report
or be able to participate in extra-curricular activities. If this has happened to you, please give us a call or
ask your student what is going on? We need the texts and circulation books back for other students.
As of the end of September, we have over 6,500 books in our collection with about 300 items being
checked out per month. This is in addition to the over 40,000 texts and other teacher materials that we
account for. We have more classes coming in to use these materials for project research. The library is a
happening place.
We have created two wish lists, one at Borders and one at Bookshop Santa Cruz. This is a wonderful
way for parents to help us increase our collection with newer, more exciting reads that our students like.
Please ask at either information desk and the salesperson can help you with your selection. Your students
and the library staff thank you.
We also have two fabulous parents who come in for a couple
hours each week and help out. A BIG thank you to Lisa
Thygeson and LeeAnn Boland. The other parents we have on
our volunteer list please forgive us for not contacting you yet.
As we related, things are winding down and we would love to
have more help. Expect a call sometime soon.
Thank you!
Donna and Cathi
