                                 Greetings!

In this Summer 2010 Program Guide, you will find information on a variety
of Library programs and events to entertain the entire family! We will be
offering a wide range of events for children, teens, adults and families!
Programs include Storytimes, Adult Computer Classes, Genealogy Work-
shops, Movie Nights, and special events by local performers and organiza-
tions. The best part is that all of these events are FREE! Check our online
events calendar at www.npl.lib.va.us regularly for program updates.

Summer Reading and the Summer Reading Program @ NPL!
The idea is simple, children who read throughout the summer stay on
course, and kids who do not read during the summer slip backwards.
When children go eight weeks without opening a book, it can actually
make the act of reading even more difficult when they return to school
in the fall. This is because children lose over two months of learning
when they don’t read over the summer. Thus, when students start back to school in the fall,
they aren’t reading on the same level they were when they left in June. So, how can you help keep reading
a priority over the summer? Here are a few suggestions:

• Sign	up	for	Norfolk	Public	Library’s	Summer	Reading	Program!	We	have	reading	programs	for	all	age	groups,
from	babies	to	adults.	SRP	is	a	fun	way	to	incorporate	reading and	related	activities	into	summer	family	time.
• Establish	a	regular	time	for	reading	in	your	home	for	all	members	of the	family.	Offer	to	read	at	bedtime	or	after
dinner.	Even	10	or	15	minutes	a	day	is	very	helpful.
• Read	a	chapter	book	aloud	to	the	entire	family.	Even	older	children	will	come	to	look	forward	to	this	special	time
	       together.
• Motivate	your	children	to	read	by	being	a	good	role	model	and	reading	yourself.
• Create	a	literacy-rich	environment	in	your	home	by	keeping	a	good	supply	of	reading	materials	within	easy	reach
	       of the	whole	family.

The theme for the 2010 Summer Reading Program is Hooked on Reading! The program consists of
weekly events, reading incentives, and prizes. This year we have 4 different reading groups: Baby Starfish
(for parents & babies); Hook A Book (for ages 5-12); Submerge Yourself (for ages 13-17); and Reading-
It’s A SHORE Thing! (for adults 18 and up). Stop by your local library beginning June 21 and register
for the Summer Reading Program- it’s free, fun & easy!

For more information about the Summer Reading Program and for updated program information, please
call the Children’s Department at 664-7323 ext. 43744 or go to www.npl.lib.va.us.

     The Norfolk Public Library Foundation
The Norfolk Public Library Foundation was founded in 1995
by a group of Norfolk citizens concerned with improving and ensuring
the quality and vitality of the library system for present and future generations.
The Foundation has created several endowments to enhance and improve collections,
technology, programming, and bricks and mortar. The need to enhance and preserve the
Sargeant Memorial Room collection prompted the Norfolk Public Library Foundation in 2007
to announce that they were going to raise 1.5 million dollars over the next 10 years to endow
the SMR. For more information about the NPL Foundation, or should you require
professional assistance in structuring a lifetime or testamentary gift, please call
                             (757) 664-7328 ext. 307, or visit our website at
