                                                                                                                                                        Award-winning cancer specialist Dr. Steven Rosen has been director of the
                                                                                                                                                     Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University
                                                                                                                                                     since 1989. Listed as one of Chicago’s Top Doctors and America’s Top
                                                                                                                                                     Doctors, Dr. Rosen was the natural choice to treat Chicago’s first lady, Maggie
                                                                                                                                                     Daley, when she was diagnosed with cancer in 2002.
                                                                                                                                                        Last year Rosen and the Lurie Cancer Center, along with Feinberg School of
                                                                                                                                                     Medicine and Northwestern Memorial Hospital, created the groundbreaking
                                                                                                                                                     Brain Tumor Institute, with codirectors Jeffrey Raizer and James Chandler lead-
                                                                                                                                                     ing teams of faculty clinicians and scientists focused on identifying and treating
                                                                                                                                                     brain cancers early, determining factors that contribute to their development,
                                                                                                                                                     researching new therapies and drugs and developing new treatments.
                                                                                                                                                        “Creation of the Brain Tumor Institute firmly establishes Northwestern as a pre-
                                                                                                                                                     eminent resource in efforts to help us improve care for patients,” says Dr. Chandler,
                                                                                                                                                     who is also Northwestern Memorial’s surgical director of neuro-oncology.
                                                                                                                                                        Doctors at the center are working toward treatments to enhance and pro-
                                                                                                                                                     long the lives of tumor patients like Anna Moukhina, a 32-year-old woman
                                                                                                                                                     who died this spring of glioblastoma, the most common malignant brain
                                                                                                                                                     tumor, two days after her hospital-bedside wedding ceremony.
                                                                                                                                                        “Currently less than one-third of adults survive five years after being
                                                                                                                                                     diagnosed with a primary brain tumor,” says Dr. Raizer, director of medi-
