Dear friends and members of the Hellenic Educational Society,

You are kindly invited to participate in the INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
                      “EDUCATING INDIVIDUALS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS:
A CHALLENGE FOR SCHOOL AND SOCIETY”
Co-Organized by:
Hellenic Educational Society
Hellenic Society of Special Education
Macedonia Branch of the Hellenic Educational Society
School of Philosophy and Education of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
Department of Educational and Social Policy of the University of Macedonia
Department of Theology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
Department of Primary Education of the University of Western Macedonia
Thessaloniki Branch of the School of Pedagogical and Technological Education.

The current social and economic changes worldwide require the provision both of knowledge and
capabilities that will enable students to envision and create new opportunities in the field of
education, employment and coexistence. In this context, the school has to develop active learning,
critical thinking, social solidarity and cohesion as well as respect for the human rights.
People with special needs have little opportunity to learn and often experience social exclusion due
to the limited number of specialized educational programs, the inadequacy of educational structures
and the inability of the school to fulfill its role in the socialization of students. For this reason, the
revision of school policy is an urgent necessity and a challenge for society.
The International Conference “Educating individuals with special needs: a challenge for school and
society” will be completed on 3 December, the International Day of People with Special Needs. The
Conference aims to provide an opportunity for scientists, researchers and teachers to raise concerns
                                                                                                     3

and research data through the exchange of ideas and the in-depth analysis of an issue with many
social and political implications. We also hope that the Conference will contribute to the
preservation of the rights of people with special needs and promote their demands for equal
participation in education and social life.

Conference topics:
 Institutional, philosophical and historical framework for the education of individuals with special
   needs
 Screening, assessment and diagnosis of the abilities and difficulties of individuals with special
   needs
 Educational programs and teaching methods
 Education of individuals with special needs in the mainstream school
 New technologies in the education of individuals with special needs
 Social and emotional aspects of the education of individuals with special needs
 Vocational training and social inclusion in the education of individuals with special needs
 School – family – community partnerships
