Unpublished Papers

Democratic Hierarchies in the Workplace (1991), dissertation, Cornell.
An examination of how attempts to apply democratic ideals to ownership and management of
firms shape structure and process in groups. Ethnographic research in six case studies
                                                                             Viggiani, p. 8

Unpublished Papers, cont.

suggests patterns of response to hierarchy: areas of tension and contradiction (accountability,
authority, ownership) as well as procedures or mechanisms (attention to values, commitment to
process, use of democratic repertoires and rituals) used to preserve such organizations over time.

Doctoral research papers (1985): "Beyond the Masculine Metaphor: Organizational
Transformation and Gender" and "Power, Affect and Gender", for Carol Gilligan
(Adolescent Development) and Chris Argyris (Theory & Methods of Consulting), Harvard
Graduate School of Education; and "Scientific Management and Masculine Metaphor: the
Life and Times of Frederick Winslow Taylor" for Evelyn Fox Keller (Gender and
Science), MIT

Cooperative Consciousness: An Inquiry Into the Psychological Dimension of Participatory
Democracy (1984), unpublished M.A. thesis, 1984. Explores how psychological
dynamics of equality and empowerment may be elucidated by an analysis of gender-related
modes of thought, feeling and action. Participant/observation case study suggests how
"self-in-separation" and "self-in-connection" modes may facilitate or prevent organizational
democratization
