Supreme Board Votes $150,000 for Wheelchairs for Haiti

At its quarterly meeting on Feb. 6, the Supreme Board of Directors voted to donate $150,000 for the purchase of 1,000
wheelchairs for distribution to those whose limbs have been amputated or have otherwise become disabled in Haiti. The
Order will work through the Global Wheelchair Mission to get the wheelchairs to Haiti as soon as possible. The Supreme
Council had earlier donated $50,000 to Catholic Relief Services for Haiti relief. In addition, Knights of Columbus dona-
tions from state and local councils and from individual members for Haiti earthquake relief exceeded $400,000 as of
February 8. Approximately $372,000 of the total came from the United States and more than $29,000 came from Can-
ada. The period during which on-line donations to the United in Charity Fund will be earmarked for Haiti relief has been
extended to Feb. 15. Donors may also send checks, which should include the words “Haiti earthquake relief” on the
memo line.

                                                 NEWS FROM STATE
My Brother Knights of Texas
Marietta and I personally invite you and your family to join us at our 106th Annual State Convention. This year we will be
in the Beautiful City of Corpus Christi on April 30th –May 2, 2010. What a great way to celebrate our Year of the Priest in
the city named for the Body of Christ.
The local convention committee has been working very hard to make this convention a memorable one for all our
Brother Knights and their families throughout Texas. Here are a few of the highlights of the upcoming convention. On
Friday morning, there are two events from which to choose. For the golfers, there is golf tournament. For the fishermen,
there will be a charter fishing cruise. On Friday morning there will also be a Clergy Seminar hosted by our State Chap-
lain the Most Rev. Placido Rodriguez and Associate State Chaplain Monsignor Peter Flood. This seminar is for all
clergy. We ask that you contact your priests/chaplains now, and ask them to please put this on their calendar. Immedi-
ately following the Clergy Seminar we will have a Clergy Luncheon for all our clergy.
On Friday afternoon we have planned the Awards Ceremony. Please make plans to attend this important event. Please
help us congratulate all the work done by the various individual Knights and their councils. Following the Awards Cere-
mony we will celebrate our Opening Mass. We will close the day on Friday with a Family night at the Aquarium. Please
get your tickets in advance. Your family will really enjoy dining surrounded by beautiful scenery.
On Saturday morning the Convention Business Session begins with the State Deputy’s Report. Everyone is invited to
listen to the State Deputy’s Report. Following the Report, the Business of the Knights begins. While the men will be busy
in the business session, the ladies will be enjoying the Saturday Ladies Luncheon. Marietta invites all the ladies to join
her and the rest of the lovely ladies to this function. Saturday evening will be our Memorial Mass followed by our State
Banquet. Sunday will be another business day for the men. The ladies are invited to attend the Ladies’ breakfast with
Marietta. Immediately after our convention closes, Executive Secretary, Michael McLaughlin will meet with the elected
Supreme Convention Delegates and those interested in attending the Supreme Convention. The 128th Supreme Con-
vention will be in Washington D.C. August 3-5, 2010.
Each council is entitled to seat two delegates. Therefore, it is important to elect your delegates early so that you may fill
out the registration forms. Anyone who wishes to attend the convention is invited to join us for a fun filled weekend in
Corpus Christi. There are so many things to do and see in Corpus Christi, we hope that you will make it. Marietta and I
look forward to sharing Corpus Christi and all its wonderful sites, sounds, and tastes with all of you.
Fraternally yours, Javier and Marietta Martinez

                                                 INSURANCE NEWS
AN ECONOMIC MUST

Do you have seat belts in your car? Of course you do! How many do you have? Aren’t you certain that you have one for every
member of your family? Would you buy an automobile that only provided one “belt” – that being for you?
But would you believe that family after family with whom I visit are running along with one “belt” of insurance on the father.
Somehow, the common opinion seems to be that death will strike only the father – not the mother.
Today, insuring your wife’s life is an economic must. With “wife insurance,” should death occur, you have a fighting chance to
retain at least a semblance of a home for your children.

and our Field Agent Brother Leo for his informative program.

• At our February meeting we presented our Knight of the Month Award to Brother Cory Burkhalter for his many contributions. He has
participated in every event we have put on since joining our Order and has worked very hard. He also was our top brisket salesman.
    Great job Brother Cory.

• Council received 2 more awards at the meeting. DD Brother Gary presented the council with the Vocations Support Award and the very
prestigious Lone Star Award for Excellence with Distinction. Great job to everyone and congratulations on receiving these awards.

• Also on January 17th, we had 2 Knights go through their 2nd and 3rd Degree Exemplification ceremony in Angleton. Congratulations to
Brothers Tom Sanford and Chris Agostinelli for finishing their journey to full Knighthood. I want to encourage all of our Brothers that are

                                DISTRICT DEPUTY’S REPORT
                    Worthy Brothers,

I would like to start off by saying that I am so proud of District 75. The councils in
this district have responded to the call and are at the top of the list when it comes to
participation in local, diocesan, state and even worldwide events. By the time you
read this newsletter, councils in District 75 will have 100% participation in the Coun-
cil and District sponsored Free Throw Contest. All councils will have 100% participation at our Di-
ocesan Conference held in Rosenberg on January 16th and 100% participation in our diocesan
sponsored Clergy Appreciation Night. Also, all councils will be receiving the State’s Quick Start
Award for having met their state charities goal before December 31st and many councils have
stepped up to donate to Catholic Relief Services to help out our brothers and sisters in Haiti in their
time of need. Way to go District 75!

February will offer us many more opportunities to come together as Knights and brothers. Many
councils will be starting their Lenten Fish Fries this month and with that comes the opportunity to
meet catholic men that are not members of the Knights of Columbus. I urge you to use this time to
introduce the Knights to these men and their families by promoting the many good works that your
council participates in. Also, do not overlook the young men from ages 10-18, they may be inter-
ested in joining a Squires Circle. I encourage you to order now, the literature, pictures and posters
that can help you be successful in your recruiting efforts.

As a reminder, there will be a Squires Investiture on Saturday February 20th at Council 4204 in
Sugar Land and there will be a Major Degree (2nd and 3rd) on Sunday February 21st at Council 2801
in Rosenberg. Please contact your Grand Knight or Financial Secretary for more information.
Spring is just around the corner so make sure you stay informed by attending your council meetings
and checking the newsletter for updates on the many upcoming events.

For all of you Brother Knights that will have a son or daughter graduating this May, I encourage you
to explore the many scholarships and grants that are available through the Texas State Council and
Supreme. The deadline for submission for many of these offerings is March 1st so do not delay in
getting your paperwork in. If you need more information, simply email me and I will be happy to
point you in the right direction.

God bless you and your families,
Gary Blanchette District Deputy #75
