THE SECOND CHANCE SHE NEVER
THOUGHT SHE’D NEED.
“I wasn’t able to finish high school due
to a health condition beyond my control,
so Newstep was my second chance of
getting into uni.
“When I was offered a place in Newstep,
a law degree still seemed an impossible
dream. The staff were incredibly supportive
and understanding of my circumstances.
They went to all lengths to relieve any
pressures, encouraging me to meet my
potential, without compromising the
standard of work required.
“I am now studying a combined degree
of law and arts, including a major in
international affairs. I’ve achieved my
lifelong dream of studying law, and
Newstep has enabled me to do so.
I hope to ultimately use my degree
to assist the disadvantaged, and
to advocate for social justice.”

HOW mUCH DOES IT COST? There is a cost involved when it comes to studying at university,
but don’t let the financial side of things deter you. There are
many payment options, making your goal of a university degree
achievable.
How much does university cost?
Some degrees are more expensive than others and the amount you
contribute depends on the degree you choose, the courses you enrol in,
and how many courses you study. You’ll also need to pay for textbooks
and resources for the course you have chosen to study.
Commonwealth Supported Place
(formerly known as HECS support)
Domestic undergraduate students are Commonwealth supported. This means
that the Australian Government pays for some of your degree, and you pay
the rest in the form of a student contribution (HECS).
Am I eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP)?
To receive a Commonwealth Supported Place, you need to prove that you are:
• an Australian citizen
• an Australian permanent humanitarian visa holder
• a New Zealand citizen residing in Australia for a degree
• a holder of an Australian permanent visa residing in Australia for a degree.
Student Contribution (HECS) payment options
• You can pay in full up-front to the University before the census date.
If you do this you will receive a discount of 20 per cent.
• You can make a partial payment of over $500 (and defer the rest to the
Tax Office via a HECS-HELP loan). If you do this, you’re also eligible for
a discount.
• Alternatively, you can defer all of your student contribution to the Tax Office
via a HECS-HELP loan.
If you defer part or all of your student contribution, compulsory repayment
starts when you are earning over $44,912 (this payment threshold is based
on a 2010-11 income – income thresholds are adjusted annually).
New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent resident visa holders do not
receive a discount and are required to pay their student contribution in full to
the University.
HECS-HELP
To make university affordable, the Australian Government provides a loan to
students under the HECS Higher Education Loan Program (HECS-HELP)
scheme. This loan is available to Australian citizens and Australian permanent
humanitarian visa holders enrolled in Commonwealth Supported Places.
You won’t actually get the money – the government covers the cost of your
contribution by paying the loan amount directly to the university on your behalf.
This is how it works:
• you supply the University with a tax file number, and the debt is recorded
for you with the Tax Office
• once you start working and your income reaches a certain threshold your
HELP loan will be repaid each year through the taxation system
• the amount you have to pay each year depends on how much you earn.

Why the seahorse?
The University’s emblem since 1965 has
been a mythical seahorse, based on the naval
coat of arms of Lieutenant John Shortland,
who chartered and named Hunter’s River in
1797. Our seahorse today looks back to our
heritage and the history of Newcastle; and it
looks ahead, recognising our status as one of
Australia’s most forward-looking universities.
