Westchester Italians’ Protest in NYC to Preserve Homeland a Success
By Carla Rose Arnone
In this day and age, you don’t have to be situated in a particular region of
the world in order to make an impact there. For Westchester residents looking
to stage an effective protest, for example, all that’s required is a team of dedi-
cated individuals and the world spotlight that is often afforded to nearby New
York City. And what better setting than the annual Columbus Day parade on
Fifth Avenue for a busload of 50 Italian-Americans looking to speak out
against a mega-landfill being installed in their hometown 3,000 miles away?
The Harrison-based Comunita’ Andrettese Club, Inc., founded in 1977,
organized last month on behalf of the town of Andretta, located in the
Campania region of Southern Italy, where a 140-acre landfill is proposed for
an area of the town known as Formicoso. The Formicoso landfill project has
an initial capacity of 2 million metric tons of garbage. To combat this, more
than 300 Andrettese families living in here in Westchester County — the
majority of which call Harrison home — formed a committee called
Formicoso Worldwide to call global attention to the situation.
According to White Plains resident and Andrettese Club member
Giovanni Mastrogiacomo, 32, when Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi Members of the Andrettese community staged a protest last
