                                       Christian Audigier isn’t afraid of a tight deadline. That fearless attitude is good
                                     because he will have only two months to pull together a just-confirmed New York
                                     edition of his new trade show, When I Move You Move (WIMYM). The event is
                                     scheduled for Jan. 18–20 at the Terminal Stores, located on 11th Avenue between 27th
                                     and 28th streets.

     As of press time, only Audigier-owned brands
 were confirmed as exhibitors.
     Audigier has his own way of doing things. By
 using the constant paparazzi exposure of celebri-
 ties as a form of free advertising for his fashion,
 Audigier built the brands Von Dutch and Ed
 Hardy at lightning speed.
     His approach to his new trade show, which
 debuted Aug. 25–28 at Caesars Palace in Las
 Vegas, is exactly the same: Music, art and celebrity
 entertainment are just as important as product.
     “My company is based on a huge marketing
 monster, so marketing a trade show is the same
 as marketing my brands,” he says. His big celeb-
 rity draw for the next Las Vegas show, scheduled
 for Feb. 16–19? “I’m working on Madonna,”
 Audigier says.
     WIMYM’s debut show exceeded all expecta-
 tions, says Kasandra Carlson, director of trade
 shows and events for Audigier Media. “For a first
 show, it was unbelievable,” she says.
     For February, Carlson hopes to hit 300 exhibi-
 tor booths, up from 144. Expect more denim and
 top-tier brands to fill the 60,000 square feet of

                                                                                                                                                        by far the best as far as the overall
                                                                                                                                                        atmosphere, look and feel goes.”
                                                                                                                                                            Carlson says feedback revealed
                                                                                                                                                        that exhibitors were impressed by
                                                                                                                                                        the quality of buyers. “Quantity
                                                                                                                                                        isn’t always necessarily quality,
                                                                                                                                                        which is what leads to writing
                                                                                                                                                        business,” she notes.
                                                                                                                                                            Combined, Audigier brands
                                                                                                                                                        wrote $60 million in August,
                                                                                                                                                        Carlson says.
                                                                                                                                                            WIMYM also entices buyers
                                                                                                                                                        and exhibitors with a number of
                                                                                                                                                        perks, including free lunch and
                                                                                                                                                        beverages for everyone, an hour-
                                                                                                                                                        long open bar in the evening,
                                                                                                                                                        extended hours from 8 a.m. to 8
                                                                                                                                                        p.m., and entertainment located
                                                                                                                                                        conveniently on-site.
                                                                                                                                                            Naturally, all this doesn’t
                                                                                                                                                        come cheap. Exhibitor rates are
                                                                                                                                                        “basically double” those of other
                                                                                                                                                        shows, according to Carlson. “But
                                                                                                                                                        you get what you pay for in the
                                                                                                                                                        way of amenities, the build-out of
                                                                                                                                                        booths, hotel discounts and things
                                                                                                                                                        that other shows don’t offer,” she
                                                                                                                                                        says. For the August show, the
                                                                                                                                                        average booth fee was $15,000.
                                                                                                                                                            For February, WIMYM will
                                                                                                                                                        seek to improve the energy of the
                                                                                                                                                        show, particularly regarding enter-
                                                                                                                                                        tainment. Two ballrooms were
                                                                                                                                                        used for the last show, spreading
                                                                                                                                                        out and diluting the excitement.
                                                                                                                                                            The show also plans a broader
                                                                                                                                                        marketing campaign; the last show
                                                                                                                                                        included signs on 1,000 Las Vegas
                                                                                                                                                        taxicabs.
                                                                                                                                                            In addition, VIP retailer services
                                                                                                                                                        will be ramped up and will include
                                                                                                                                                        “specialized transportation” to and
                                                                                                                                                        from the MAGIC International
                                                                                                                                                        and Project trade shows and VIP

Browne, however, contends the
show’s benefits go beyond the
tough times. “In good times and
bad, we are a solution—perhaps the
solution—to helping the economy,”
he says. “It could be that one item
you find at our show that can make
your whole season. It gives you the
margin and the relief you need.”
     The Off-Price Specialist Show’s
marketing outreach is directed
toward educating recalcitrant
buyers who may equate “off-
price” with bargain-basement
castoffs. “We are deconstructing
the perception still out there that
this is The Rummage Show,”
Browne says. Last year’s campaign
emphasized trendy fashion and
big-name goods from such names
as James Perse, Sean John,
Tommy Bahama, to name just a
few. The theme for 2009—“This
Is Off-Price”—is designed to
showcase the wide array of items
and demographics covered by the
show’s vendors.
     “We have specialists in all sorts
of categories,” Browne says. “And
our price points are such a boon for
your business.” There are the deep-
discount items—up to 70 percent off
wholesale—for the deep-discount
stores. But there are also brand
names that can help expand and
enliven a boutique’s inventory while
providing a great profit margin.
“Any type of retailer or wholesaler
can benefit spending a day or two at
our show,” Browne says. “You don’t
have to be an off-price retailer. You
can find a great deal on a branded
item and keep it at the same price
level of your other goods to maintain
the integrity of your store and still
have great margins.”
     And, clearly, buyers are getting
that message. Gone are the days
when the show set up shop in
parking lots. Since 2002, The Off-
Price Show took place at the Sands
Expo & Convention Center. This
February, it returns to the luxurious
Grand Ballrooms of The Venetian,
where it debuted a special show
in February 2007 to celebrate its
25th event in Las Vegas. “Location,
location, location,” Browne only
