History of Modern Lebanon
Instructor: Dr. Fawwaz Traboulsi
Summer 2011
Date and Office Hours: Tuesdays, April 12 to June 28. 6 Hour final block
End June (Friday or Saturday Afternoon)

Course Description: This seminar is devoted to the study of the modern
history of Lebanon from the Emirate in the 17 th C. to the end of the 1975-1990
wars. It will follow a multi-disciplinary approach to highlight the developments
leading to the emergence of the State of Greater Lebanon, the French
Mandate, and the social, economic and political developments since the
country‟s Independence in 1943. Special emphasis will be given to the civil war
of 1975-1990.

Course Requirements: Students are expected to read and report in class on
the assigned material and research a term paper on a selected topic related to
the course to be presented and discussed in class.

Required Texts:
- Traboulsi, Fawwaz, A History of Modern Lebanon (London: Pluto Books,
2007).
In addition to the required text, additional reading material from a variety of
sources will be made available to the students.

Grades: The final grade will be based on attendance and class participation
and on a research paper on a theme related to the seminar‟s topic presented
and discussed on class.
