                                  Become a Kentucky Saver Today!!!
In approximately 8 weeks many of us will go through the tradition of making a new years resolution. And
year after year, saving money and getting out of debt remain one of the most popular resolutions. The question
remains – what‘s stopping you? Take action today and work towards your financial goal by ―starting small
and thinking big.‖
Start Small: What‘s the secret to saving? Spending less than you earn is the key to saving money and
avoiding debt. By making small and manageable changes to your lifestyle, you can further decrease your
expenses. Tackle a few spending ‗vices‘ at a time rather than radically altering your lifestyle. Some easy ways
to save:
Rethink the ―essentials.‖ The latest-and-greatest cell phone, video game, or computers are nice to have,
but by no means necessities. Buy what you need, not what you want.
Turn saving into a game – roll your spare change, mail in rebates, sell unwanted items – do whatever you
can to get closer to your savings goal!
Save automatically. Have a portion of your paycheck (as little as $25) transferred automatically to your
savings. Chances are you‘ll never even notice the difference.

Think Big: Individuals with a savings plan are 50% more successful than those who don‘t. Take the
opportunity to join America Saves and create your own simple savings plan for free.
America Saves members also have access to the ―My Savings Tracker‖ which can help
you track progress towards your savings goal. Need help figuring out what to save for?
Create a $500 or more emergency fund to meet unexpected expenses.
Save for Holiday presents rather than relying on credit.
Pay off credit cards and other high-interest debt.
For a little assistance become a Kentucky Saver Today. Please fill out the form
provided in this newsletter (page 9) and mail to Jennifer Hunter, University of Kentucky, 319A Funkhouser
Building, Lexington, KY 40506-0054, and begin receiving information, advice, and encouragement on how to
pay down debt, build an emergency fund, save for a home, save for an education, or save for retirement.

                                From the President’s Desk
Dear Friends,
Wow! Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner. Can‘t you smell the baked turkey and dressing?
On September 30, at the Hardin County Fair facilities, the ―Progressive Agriculture Foundation ‗Safety Day‘‖ was hosted by
the Hardin County Extension Council and Bonnie Jolly. It was a most successful event for Bonnie Jolly and her team. Thank
you, to Carol Parrett (Rineyville Club) and the Hardin County Extension Homemakers for your help in making this event a
success.
Also on September 30, in the Hardin County Extension Auditorium we held our annual Cultural Arts Exhibit and Judging for
Hardin County Extension Homemakers. See in this Newsletter the number of entries and winners. Thank You Hardin County
Extension Homemakers and Debbie McQueary, for this successful event.
October 8, seventy-three Hardin County Extension Homemakers attended the annual Lincoln Trail Area Extension
Homemakers meeting held in the Lodge at Rough River State Park. The speaker, Susan Dyer, author of Lincoln‘s Advocate,
―The Life of Judge Joseph Holt‖, told how she became involved in writing this book and working to preserve Judge Joseph Holt‘s
House. We enjoyed her guided tour of Judge Joseph Holt‘s House. Also, at this meeting we were well represented in the
Cultural Arts Exhibit and Judging. Twenty-five Blue Ribbons were awarded to Hardin County Extension Homemakers. We have
many talented members! These winners are eligible to send their items to the State Meeting. At this meeting, HCEHA, Martha
Thomas received the honor of being elected the Lincoln Trail Area 2nd Vice President Officer. Martha, Congratulations! We are
glad to have you represent us. Thank you!
October 10-16, was Kentucky Extension Homemakers Association Week. On October 12, Teran Ransom, Hardin County
FCS Agent, and I attended Hardin County Fiscal Court, where, once again, Hardin County Judge/Executive Harry L. Berry,
honored us with a proclamation proclaiming this same week, Hardin County Extension Homemakers Association Week.
We were happy to receive this acknowledgement for each of our members. While we were there, we presented Judge Berry
and the court a large presentation check showing the monetary value of Hardin County Extension Homemakers‘ 2009
community service volunteer hours. The monetary value of 42,253 hours, equaled $852,243.01. Yes! The court was impressed
of our value. Just imagine, if every HCEHA member turned in their volunteer hours what an impressive figure we could present
to the court and the community. To each of our members, ―thank you‖, for your time and talent! During this week we were
honored at the Hardin County Extension Office, in an article in ―The News-Enterprise‖, and on the marquees of Don Lumber,
Ride-Wright Tires and First Class Car Care.
November 9 is Farm/City Day. This year we will be visiting Agri-Businesses. Hoping to see you there.
Don‘t forget our HCEHA Scholarship Fund Raiser, the Holiday Bazaar, November 13. Hardin County Extension
Homemakers Clubs are asked to donate soup-chili, potato, etc. and baked goods to sell to the vendors and customers. NOTE:
Please let Maxine Warnshuis, 270-369-6298, know what kind of soup you plan to bring.
Reminder: 1)to continue with the 2 HCEHA projects-electronic recycling program and collecting pull tabs; 2)to keep the
membership drive going; 3) to be vigilant in filling out the KEHA Program of Work Report for the year of July 1, 2010 through
June 30, 2011.
In closing, I wish for you the special pleasures of Autumn and the special blessings of Thanksgiving. Please grab your STAR,
hang onto your STAR, and keep your STAR shining brilliantly. And remember ―All Things Kentucky/All Things Hardin County‖.
Sincerely,

Pat Mueller
Hardin County Extension Homemakers President
