					                              IDE/JETRO-ECLAC JOINT SEMINAR

Title (tentative): Integration and Industrial Development Strategies: Asia and Latin America in a
                      Comparative Perspective

Organizer: Institute of Developing Economies, Japan External Trade Organization
United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean

Date: March 3, 2010

Venue: Sala Celso Furtado ECLAC, Santiago de Chile

Objectives: This seminar aims to discuss industrial development strategies in the current
economic environments, sharing experiences of East Asia and Latin America. How
to overcome the latest financial turmoil is an urgent issue common to developing
countries. Developing countries were demanded to get through the recession,
mitigating the overdependence on markets in developed countries. One of the ways
to approaching this difficulty is to promote the economic integration and South-
South cooperation. It is recognized that they are crucial to realize the potential for
local market development and consolidate industrial foundations. International
organizations are expected to take coordination roles in promoting necessary joint
actions. In the case of East Asia, China and India are becoming an engine for
regional economic growth and revitalizing economic activities. The Government of
Japan established Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA)
with the strong support of IDE-JETRO. ERIA is an international organization
playing a role of think thank for ASEAN and provides policy recommendations to
East Asia Summit leaders to promote the economic growth and narrow gaps in
economic development. On the other hand, as is well known, ECLAC has played a
leading role to promote development in Latin America and the Caribbean since its
foundation. The seminar will provide an important opportunity to share information
on current issues in East Asia and Latin America and exchange experiences and
strategies necessary for future industrial development in both regions.
