       RESEARCH
        - Associate Professor at the Urban Studies Department, Hajj Research Center,
          Umm Al-Qura University (2007-Present) conducting research and teaching
          computing in architecture and urban design/planning, including Computer
          Aided Design (CAD) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

        - Ph.D. Dissertation: “Object-Oriented Data Modeling and Warehousing to
          Support Urban Design”: All over the world, local authorities are moving towards
          managing and storing urban data in digital form. But the data storage devices
          used are heterogeneous and typically include relational database management
          systems (DBMS), GIS and CAD files. As a result, data are present in different

     locations on different platforms and under different schemas. This poses a
     problem for software applications meant to support decision-making in urban
     design that require input from more than one data source. This dissertation
     demonstrates how data warehousing—combined with object-oriented data
     modeling—is able to provide a general solution for this problem. Data
     warehousing is a technique initially developed for business applications, but is
     equally useful for urban design: The data warehouse constitutes a
     communication layer between the urban design applications and data sources.
     It makes the data available through a unified interface that hides the sources
     themselves and represents that data in terms of a general-purpose, preferably
     object-oriented, model. The dissertation also describes an implementation
     prototype of the data model and the data warehouse. The test case of this
     research is the city of Makkah in Saudi Arabia, which faces significant urban
     design and planning issues in connection with the pilgrimage (Hajj) that brings
     millions of visitors to the city every year. (May, 2002).

    - Master of Architecture Thesis: “CAD Modeling for Architectural Heritage
      Recording”: The thesis outline the problem of historic preservation and the
      opportunities that rigorous CAD models provide, describe the particular class of
      buildings in Makkah, and discuss the modeling strategy I employ that takes
      advantage of common elements, symmetry and repetition in the buildings'
      construction, and standard operations in current CAD programs. The thesis
      discusses the tools for architectural heritage recording, construction of CAD
      models of historic buildings, and the systematic analysis of built form. Finally,
      the thesis shows examples of using the method to streamline the construction
      of accurate CAD models. (April, 1997).

    - Research Assistant at the Urban Studies Department, Hajj Research Center,
      Umm Al-Qura University (1993-1995). I was involved in the following projects
      and researches:
           - Films: “Managing People at a Bus Station”, “Managing Parking Lots”:
             both of these video films were directed and edited by me. They were a
             documentation and demonstration of the application of the previous
             applied research. (1995).
           - “Planning and Managing the Use of a Large Parking Area in Makkah”:
             the study was an experimentation of planning and managing the traffic
             and pedestrian movement in parking area near the Holy Mosque in
             Makkah. (1995).
           - “Post Occupancy Evaluation of the Design of a Resting Area for
             Pedestrian Pilgrims”: a research work which included data collection
             (questionnaires), analysis and critique, and then proposing new design
             principles. (1994).
           - “Central Makkah Guide Map 1994”: the design and publishing of a guide
             map of the central area of the city of Makkah, which was distributed to
             decision makers in the city as well as to the public. (1994).

              - “Holy Areas Guide Map 1993”: the design and publishing of a guide map
                of the Holy areas near the city of Makkah (Arafat & Muna), which was
                distributed to decision makers in the city as well as to the public. (1993).
