PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Multicultural Public Speaking Competition Success! - Congratulations to our Multicultural
Public Speaking Competition representatives. They competed on Tuesday at the local finals at
Gerringong PS. Our Junior speakers, Ava Riddell and Hannah Robinson performed very well
with Ava eventually winning! In the Seniors, Monique Mendicino was awarded a Highly
Commended whilst Belinda Lewthwaite won! What a wonderful achievement for these hard-
working children of our school. I would also like to thank Mrs Wigny for her time and effort in
preparing our girls so thoroughly. Congratulations everyone!

Director-General Visits Shell Cove - Last Thursday, our school was visited by the Director-
General of Education in NSW, Mr Michael Coutts-Trotter. After meeting our office staff and
some members of our school P&C executive he then was taken on a brief tour of our school, led
by three of our students, Caitlin Garcia, Jordan Lide and Jayden Vezinias.
He visited Mrs Davis and Class KR where he spent some time joining in with their numeration
activities and talking to the children about what they were doing. He then travelled via our
school library to Mrs Wigny and Class 3W. He participated in some space and maths activities
before we opened the doors to Class 3R where Mrs Rose led Year 3 as they sang Mr Coutts-
Trotter our school song. Three of our students, Rebecca Farrell, Brianna Burford and
Charlotte Stojanovic then presented the Director-General with a beautiful piece of artwork
which they had specially prepared. Mr Coutts-Trotter was obviously appreciative of this
beautiful gift and I would like to especially thank Mrs Wilson for showcasing the skills and
abilities of our children in such a wonderful way.
I would also like to thank the staff, students and community of our school for showing Mr
Coutts-Trotter that Shell Cove PS is obviously a very special place to learn.

Reporting to Parents - Tomorrow we will be distributing our Semester 1 student reports. If,
when you receive your child’s report you would like further information, please do not hesitate
to contact our school to make an appointment with the teacher for further details. Those
Stage 3 children who are attending the Canberra overnight excursion will receive their reports
on Monday.

BER Progress - On Monday after recess we finally began using our new COLA! This welcome
change does necessitate a few changes to our daily routines.
In the mornings we would like all children to take their bags to the COLA area when they
arrive at school. They will then stay in the COLA area until the bell goes at 9.00am. Children
can then take their bags and wait quietly outside their rooms for their teacher.
In the afternoons we would like our parents and carers to wait in the COLA area for their
children. Teachers in Kinder and Years 1 & 2 will take their classes to the COLA in the afternoon
at bell time. Now that we are able to use our COLA and passageway again our new arrangements
should alleviate the congestion evident in the afternoons.

Absences - Looking at all our children’s reports over the last couple of weeks it has become quite
apparent that a significant number of our children have had a large number of absences in
Semester 1. We realise that sometimes absences are unavoidable. Children obviously need to stay
home when they are unwell and families sometimes need to travel outside school holidays.
If your child is absent from school please ensure that they return to school with a signed note
explaining their absence. Any absence from school must be accounted for and attendance at
school is a legal requirement. Your assistance in facilitating this is appreciated.

Pedestrian and Road Safety Around Our School - Last week I noted that we had contacted the
RTA to explore the possibility of getting a crossing supervisor for the mornings and afternoons
for our crossing on Stradbroke Avenue. I have received correspondence from them indicating that
they will be surveying our local traffic conditions in both mornings and afternoons in Term 3.

                                      Thought of the Week
“Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on
trying even when there seemed to be no hope at all” – Dale Carnegie (American writer and lecturer)

MULTICULTURAL PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION
Last Tuesday Hannah Robinson, Ava Riddell, Monique Mendicino and Belinda Lewthwaite travelled to
Gerringong Public School to participate in the Multicultural Public Speaking final for our area. Ava
and Hannah participated in the Years 3 and 4 section and Monique and Belinda took part in the
Years 5 and 6 section. It was an amazing field with 12 contestants in each section from
neighbouring schools.
Congratulations to Ava who won the Years 3 and 4 section with her speech titled, “Every Family
Has a Story” and a huge round of applause to Hannah who also presented her speech in this section
too. In the Years 5 and 6 section we blitzed the field with Belinda winning this section with her
speech titled, “When does a Migrant Become An Australian” and Monique gaining Highly
Commended with her speech titled, “Multiculturalism in the Media.”
All girls were absolutely awesome in their delivery and content of both their impromptu and
prepared speeches and as facilitator of the girls I was so proud of not only their amazing
achievement but also their dedication, commitment and outstanding effort to public speaking
leading up to and on the day.
Special thanks also to Ms Willis and Mrs Thiering for their help and commitment to Public Speaking
at Shell Cove School.
Ava Riddell and Belinda Lewthwaite will progress to the next round, the Illawarra and South East
Region Final, and we wish them all the best.
CONGRATULATIONS Ava, Hannah, Monique and Belinda – YOU GIRLS ROCK!!!!!!!!!
