2009 OHIO STATE SOFTBALL WINTER SOFTBALL CAMP GENERAL INFORMATION CAMP SESSIONS are open to campers of all ages and skill levels. When possible, campers will be grouped by age and skill level. PITCHING I: Drills & Fundamentals — This session will stress the fundamentals of throwing fastpitch. Instruction will be geared toward increasing speed and gaining control of the fastball. Instruction on the change-up pitch will also be included along with several different grips and styles. A catcher is recommended but not required. There is a separate session for catching instruction. PITCHING II: Advanced Movement — This session is targeted toward pitchers that want to build their pitching repertoire. Several different grips and techniques of throwing the drop ball, curve ball, change-up, screwball, and rise ball will be presented. The purpose and strategy of each pitch will be discussed. A catcher is recommended but not required. There is a separate session for catching instruction. CATCHING I: This session will focus on the proper defensive techniques of the catching position. Catchers will receive instruction on stance, blocking balls, throwing to bases, pop-ups, signal calling, and knowledge of the strike zone rules. Game defensive strategy will also be discussed. Catching session on Saturday and Sunday will cover the same information. This session is separate from the pitching sessions. HITTING I: This session will focus on the proper fastpitch hitting technique. Athletes will have a chance to practice the proper hitting techniques through various drills including t-work, soft toss, hitting machines, etc. Bunting and slapping will be instructed. Hitting session on Saturday and Sunday will cover the same information. FIELDING I: This session will focus on the proper defensive techniques of the infield and outfield positions. Instruction for all fielders will include throwing, fielding, and position responsibilities. Team defensive strategy and play making will also be discussed. Indicate which position you want on the registration form. There will be NO instruction for the pitching and catching positions in this session. Campers will also be able to purchase lunch (pizza by the slice) each day from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. REFUNDS A full refund less a $35 administrative fee per instructional session will be issued for any cancellation received at least 2 weeks prior to the start of the camp session. Any cancellations received less than 2 weeks prior to the start of the camp session will not be eligible for any refund. Cancellation notices and refund requests must be submitted on the Refund Request Form available at ohiostatebuckeyes.com/ camps. The camp fee cannot be transferred to any other Ohio State sports camp or camper. THE EXCELLENCE. 2009 OHIO STATE SOFTBALL BUCKEYE SPORTS CAMPS WINTER SOFTBALL CAMP FEATURING THE OHIO STATE SOFTBALL COACHING STAFF LINDA KALAFATIS Ohio State Head Coach Named the 2007 Regional Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, the Ohio State coaching staff is among the most accomplished and respected in the nation. Led by head coach Linda Kalafatis, who is Ohio State’s all-time winningest coach, and assistants Ali Viola and Erica Beach, who are former collegiate All-Americans, the Buckeyes are in good hands and have the hardware to prove it. Kalafatis, who will be in her 13th year at Ohio State in 2008, has guided the Buckeyes to four NCAA tournament appearances (2002, 2004, 2006, 2007) and is one of only four Big Ten coaches with more than 600 career wins. Eight times Ohio State has won at least 30 games under Kalafatis, including the last five-consecutive years. ALI VIOLA Ohio State Assistant Coach Viola, who is entering her fourth season at Ohio State, was a three-time All-American shortstop at Nebraska and brings ten years of collegiate coaching experience to the 2008 Buckeyes. In addition to coaching Ohio State’s infielders, Viola works primarily with hitting and coaches first base during games. Erica Beach is in her third season as the Buckeyes’ pitching coach. She was a two-time All-American pitcher at Arizona State and currently plays professionally with the New England Riptide in the NPF.
