FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Notre Dame Academy Starts School Year with New Partnership with The University of
Toledo for Online College Classes
Notre Dame Academy (NDA) students will start the 2010-11 school year with even more
college credit opportunities thanks to a unique partnership with The University of Toledo (UT) to
provide 23 online classes. The online classes are open to sophomores, juniors and seniors who
meet the academic criteria.
“Online courses in college are now the norm. Most students will take at least one online
course in college. Some successfully handle it while others can struggle without the structure of
a classroom. Our goal is for every student to complete at least one online course prior to high
school graduation so they can learn the skills to be successful,” said Kim Grilliot, principal of
Notre Dame Academy.
A goal of the program is to teach students while in high school how to effectively
complete an online class. Online courses will be part of a standard class period but each student
will work on the course of their choice on their own. A faculty facilitator will be on site to help
them through the online process.
“What makes this program unique and conducive to high school students is having a set
classroom period to do the online work and a faculty facilitator available to guide them through
the process. The faculty facilitator will question and provide feedback, assess the student’s
progress, encourage them when it is needed and propel them further into the content. It tilts the
online process strongly in the student’s favor,” she explained.
With over 20 courses to choose the classes cover the areas of business, the arts, social
sciences and science. There will be no charge for the classes and students will receive college
credit upon successful completion of the course.
“Working with The University of Toledo we reviewed hundreds of courses and selected
23. Students can explore a special interest they have or get a jump start on core classes for a
college major such as business. Each year we will review and add courses based on student
interest,” she said.
“Notre Dame Academy offers a rigorous, college-prep curriculum which puts juniors and
seniors in a good position to transition to a university-level course. The University of Toledo
offers the perfect blended experience where students can take advantages of the resources of
online classes but can still have the opportunity to have face-to-face interaction on a college
campus,” explained Kevin Kucera, associate vice president for enrollment services for The
University of Toledo.
