1. What does USB mean?
USB is the abbreviation for “Universal Serial Bus”, an interface system for the PC to
connect peripherals such as a keyboard, mouse, etc which had been developed by
Intel. USB is generally Hot-Plug or Plug & Play applicable. This means, USB devices
can be connected and removed while being operated by Windows. The operating sys-
tem usually recognizes the change-over and activates the corresponding drivers. The
connections are downwards compatible, i.e. older devices will all the same still be opera-
ted. The data transfer rate here however only corresponds to the slowest connected device at a time.
2. What is a USB drive?
In the German speaking area it is a USB device which serves as replaceable memory medium, i.e. the
takeMS MEM-Drive Mini. USB drives are drives and memory media as a whole. Also common designati-
ons are USB memory stick or the English term USB flash drive. The designation memory stick is confu-
sing since also a patented memory media of the company Sony has this designation.
3. How do I use a USB drive?
Most of the new USB drives are installed ready-for-operation. This also applies for all takeMS USB
drives. This way they are quite easy to handle. Simply plug in and there you go. Windows will automati-
cally recognize the USB driveas a so-called removable medium. Now you can read or save data easily
and almost as rapidly from and to the drive as if you would work with a hard disk. Caution: If the stick is
pulled off the USB connector too quickly, you risk to loose data. It is better to wait a few seconds after
saving before pulling out the stick.
4. Do the memory sticks work on any USB connection?
In principle, yes. However, it should be a USB-2.0 connection. For about 4 years now this is a standard
on all new PCs and notebooks. In fact the USB sticks can also be used on older PCs with USB-1.1 con-
nections. But the reading and writing of data will then take about ten times longer. For PCs with the
operating system Windows 98 you need to install a driver before using the drive. You will find most of
the drivers on the Internet site of the manufacturer at takeMS under the button Support on the cor-
responding product site.

5. What else can USB drives do?
There are several additional programs. With these you can even get more out of each USB drive. You
will find the necessary software for sale or it will be attached to the drive. All takeMS MEM-Drives are
already equipped with the software Carry it Easy +Plus - takeMS Edition. It will make your work much
more comfortable. Did you find a interesting website during your working time and you want to have this
bookmark at home as well? No problem, with a few clicks you can synchronize your internet favorite
using your takeMS MEM-Drive and you can take it home. With Carry it Easy +Plus you can synchronize
your Microsoft Outlook or Outlook-Express on different PCs or notebooks or just take away your Out-

6. Why is my USB drive so slow?
◊ This might happen because of the flash memory used by the manufacturer. If you do
attach importance to the speed, you should look out for the manufacturer’s data. In
this case, the indication of the writing speed is important. For the better identificati-
on takeMS is using the item appendix high speed.
◊ It may of course also occur that the PC and the USB drive cannot agree on the high speed mode of
USB 2.0. If you plug in a USB-2.0 mass storage device into a USB-1.1 port, some Windows-XP ver-
sions will even deliver a corresponding note.
Other sources of error may be:
◊ When installing the XP service pack 2, it may occur that the special driver of the USB interface had
been replaced by a standard driver.
◊ Some combinations of USB hardware, driver and USB peripherals do not harmonize.
◊ For the USB peripherals, it is important to firstly install the drivers (if necessary) and then to plug in
the device. This order will prevent Windows from installing a generic driver which had been delivered
together with Windows and which is not working correctly.
◊ It may also be an electronic problem, in particular if the USB connector is not directly mounted on
the motherboard.

7. What does U3 mean?
U3 is a software and hardware standard developed by the memory manufacturers in order to execute
appropriate programs without previous installation on a USB stick under Windows 2000 (with Service
Pack 4), XP and Vista. These special USB sticks are also called U3 sticks. By exchanging the U3 soft-
ware, you can use the USB stick in the same way as a USB-CD drive where any kind of programs may
be located. This way, there is also however the danger that you may loose. passwords, favorites or do-
cuments saved on the PC or notebook with the USB drive only by pluggin in the USB drive without
using the keyboard or the mouse.
8. Which safety problems can occur with USB drives?
At first glance, it seams that the only danger is that the USB drive might get stolen. Se-
cond, the USB drives are bringing a general safety problem of the USB into focus: It is
difficult to lock up the data! This means the skimming from PCs or notebooks.
Up to now it had been sufficient if a PC had neither been equipped with a disk drive nor
with a CD burner and if the housing had been locked and if the network did not accept
any PC. With the USB-port and the USB drive, you can now not only get data out of the
PC, but also circumvent lots of safety mechanisms – at the latest when the PC can boot from the USB.
USB drives can be used without there own drivers and it is not possible to leave out the USB: How
would it then be possible to connect a keyboard and a mouse, since the PS/2 connection is pretty much
obsolete?

Secure it easy (available together with the takeMS MEM-Drive Firewall) you can protect USB-ports on
the PC. This software allows protecting office or private PCs and notebooks from unauthorized access
by USB drives, digital cameras, portable MP3 players or external hard disks. Only portable data devices
which have been authorized by the PC administrator or user can be used on the PC or notebook. The-
se authorized devices are classified as “Trusted Devices“ and saved in a list (White List). If a non-
authorized device is connected to the PC, an e-mail will be send to the PC administrator or user which
will inform him about the unauthorized access. This way, this software is acting in the same way as a
Firewall for your USB-ports, it will protect you from data theft via the USB-port, but it will also protect

9. What do you need to keep in mind for the memory and
housing sizes?
Only a few years ago 512 MB USB drives have been the big hit. Today they are insignifi-
cantly less expensive than their big brothers of the 1GB type. 1 or 2 GB flash memories are practically
sufficient for any user, at least if the stick is used to transport data from A to B. About 320 songs in the
MP3 format can be recorded on a 1 GB stick. However if you also want to take movies with you, you
should use larger types. At present you can buy 8 GB types at a moderate price from takeMS.
Not only the size of the memory is quite relevant, but also the size of the stick itself.
If the housing of the stick is excessively voluminous, it will block other USB-ports when it is being used
and will this way prevent you from using other USB devices. Therefore, when purchasing a USB drive,
make sure that it is narrow and slick.
10. Which stick is the right one for me?
You should make sure for yourself if you are satisfied with a
slower type or if a high speed USB drive is more appropria-
te for your applications. The price is based on these proper-
ties.
Do you need the stick for the simple data transport and da-
ta exchange or do you use it as a video store? Depending
on your use you should select the required capacity. And
