FAMILY & FRIENDS AND CORPORATE TEAMS
What is a team?
A team is a group of fundraising walkers who join together under a Team Captain to raise funds for the Walk for
Lupus Now. Teams can be any size, although the LFA-DC/MD/VA encourages Team Captains to aim for a
minimum of 10 members. Teams can be made up of family and friends or can be recruited at work, at
school or at your place of worship. Teams typically come up with a meaningful name and often design a Team
T-shirt to be worn on the day of the Walk.

Who can be a Team Captain?
Anyone can be a Team Captain! The best Team Captains are energetic, enthusiastic and motivated. Large
organizations will often have multiple teams and compete against one another.

What does a Team Captain do?
Successful Team Captains begin with a goal – both a monetary goal and a ―people‖ goal. We encourage each
walker to raise at least $100, so strive to recruit 10 fundraising walkers who together raise $1,000. Team
Captains should motivate their members, encourage fundraising and share important information as it is received
from the LFA-DC/MD/VA. They should also maintain frequent contact with their members to ensure success.
You can always encourage your team to talk with Alle Taylor, Development Intern, about any questions
they might have or for fundraising advice. Her number is 202.223.1828 or you can email her at
development@lupusmdv.org.

How do I get started?
     1. Go to www.dclupuswalk.org to register your team or mail in a team roster. You can also go to
www.lupusdmv.org and click on the Walk for Lupus Now button on our home page.
     2. If using the online option set up your team page (see pages 4-6 for instructions).
     3. Invite others to join your team – be sure to share your goals and why you are a Team Captain. The
website offers the option of sending out emails through the website, but we find that people have the
most success sending out emails from their personal account with a link to www.dclupuswalk.org.
     4. Check on the progress of your team members and let them know that they can contact Alle Taylor,
Development Intern, at 202.223.1828 or development@lupusdmv.org with any questions!
     5. Have FUN and feel good knowing that you are playing an important role in the lives of those with
         lupus.

                                 BENEFITS OF TEAM PARTICIPATION
   • Team participation increases your visibility in the community. It sends a strong signal that you, your friends,
family, co-workers and employees care about the health and welfare of your neighbors. In short, it’s good
     public and community relations!

   • Team building is a great way to build employee morale. It demonstrates that your company wants to play an
important role in supporting worthy, charitable causes.

   • Team participation costs your company very little since funds are raised through individual donations
gathered by team members from co-workers, families and friends.

   • Team building often enables a company to generate a far larger amount of money for supporting people
affected by lupus than would otherwise be possible through a direct corporate donation.

   • Walk for Lupus Now is about family and friends supporting people who live with lupus. Organizations,
schools and companies can all form teams even if they are not personally touched by the disease.
                                    FOUR STEPS TO SUCCESS
Step 1 - Set a Team Fundraising Goal: Most people work harder when they have a specific goal to meet. Set a
team goal that is attainable yet challenging. Encourage each participant to set their own dollar goal (a suggested rule
of thumb is a minimum $100 per team member). Keep track of your team’s progress and report successes
back to everyone. Share ideas with one another. Remind your team that the donations they collect will support
the programs, services and research for the Lupus Foundation of America – DC/MD/VA Chapter!

Step 2 – Recruit Participants: Anyone can join your Walk Team - family members, friends, co-workers,
ANYONE! Ask those you’ve already recruited to invite their network of friends to join. Don’t forget to ask
people you know through church or temple, networking groups, social groups, etc. Each member of your team
must register online or by completing and mailing in an Event Registration Form (photocopies accepted).

Step 3 – Communicate: Staying connected to your team keeps their enthusiasm and momentum up and gives
everyone an opportunity to share their successes and fundraising ideas. The best way to stay connected with your
team is through email, if possible. Some suggestions include: weekly e-mails, telephone updates and at least
one team gathering.

Step 4 – Fundraise: Raise donations by asking for support from family, neighbors, friends, business contacts and
co-workers. With your help, LFA-DC/MD/VA will continue to lead the fight against lupus!

                                     OTHER FUNDRAISING TIPS
Sponsor yourself! Make your contribution when you register.

Ask your employer if employees donating $5 can benefit from a Walk for Lupus Now Jeans Day.

Ask your religious organization or company to include a newsletter article about your participation
       inviting pledges and team participants.

Use the Walk website or send emails through your personal email provider. Add a tagline to your email
signature and be sure to include the link www.dclupuswalk.org.

Do a letter-writing campaign. Send a letter to your holiday card list, letting them know you’re walking and
to ask for their support. Make it personal! Explain why you are involved in this Walk and how lupus has
affected your life. Include a self addressed envelope to make it easier for them to sponsor you!

Matching Gifts Program. See if your company has a matching gift program and double your money! To
determine if your business has such a program, ask your Human Resource Department. If your company
does have a Matching Gifts program, obtain copies of the necessary forms, and send them to us to fill out!
Be sure to tell your Team members about Matching Gifts—perhaps their employers have a program
too. Ask donors if their company has a matching gift program, also!

Ask merchants you do business with to support you, such as your drycleaner, gym or hair stylist.

Have an internal company rally as a kick-off for all employees to help recruit participants. It can be
held as a breakfast, lunch or afternoon social with refreshments.

Contests are a great way to promote friendly competition among teams, departments or buildings.

TEN STEPS TO SUCCESSFUL LETTER/EMAIL WRITING
1. Write a letter that explains why you are walking for the Lupus Foundation of America, DC/MD/VA Chapter.

2. Share something personal about yourself or the person with lupus you are walking for.

3. Mail it or email it to family members, friends, co-workers and business associates. Be sure to look at your holiday card
mailing list for people you might have missed.

4. Share your personal fundraising goal in your letter, so that people will know what you’re hoping to accomplish.

5. Include in the letter some information about the important work being done by LFA-DC/MD/VA.

6. Be sure to say that donations are tax deductible and that checks should be made payable to LFA – DC/MD/VA
Chapter. If they need the LFA-DC/MD/VA federal tax ID number, it is 23-7448063.

7. Ask that they please donate by the date of the Walk so that you can turn it in at the event. Enclose a return envelope
if possible. (Donations can be returned directly to you, or they can be returned to LFA-DC/MD/VA and we will
enter them on your team page. Any checks sent to us should be mailed to:

            LFA-DC/MD/VA Chapter
            2000 L Street NW – Suite 732
            Washington, DC 20036
            Attention: Alle Taylor

8. Remember to include on your mailing list any vendors, consultants and people with whom you do business. These
people tend to make much larger donations since they are usually made from a business rather than a personal
   checking account.

9. Be sure to send thank you notes (after the Walk) to everyone who donates to you.

10. Remember, the more people to whom you send letters or emails, the more donations you will raise to help support
the best educational services, research, and programs for people living with lupus in Maryland, Virginia and D.C.
                                       SAMPLE EMAILS AND LETTERS
Below are samples that can be sent to family members, friends, and colleagues to ask them to join your Walk for Lupus Now
team:

Dear Friends & Family,

I recently accepted the challenge of forming a team for the Lupus Foundation of America, DC/MD/VA Chapter’s Walk for Lupus Now, to be
held on Saturday, April 16th at 13th Street NW & Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, DC. The Walk raises funds to support programs and
services to people who are affected by lupus. Walk for Lupus Now is the signature fundraising event of the LFA-DC/MD/VA and is the nation's
largest Walk program dedicated to provide support to those living with lupus. Last year’s event raised more than $270,000 which allowed LFA-
DC/MD/VA to provide free education programs and outreach services to improve the quality of lives for people living with lupus while also
supporting research. This year we hope to exceed last year!

As you may know, my mother was diagnosed with lupus when I was just 10 years old. While she is still doing well managing her disease, I have
seen her go through many tough times, including chemotherapy and fourteen hospitalizations.

I am asking you to help me by joining my team! My goal is to have 10 team members each raising at least $100. We’ll have a great time doing this
together! Joining my team is easy; just go to (we encourage you to find the direct link to your team page—you can email Alle
Taylor at development@lupusdmv.org if you need help or you can tell people to go to www.dclupuswalk.org and click on the
register ―Register Here‖ button. After clicking ―I agree‖ on the Walker Waiver/Agreement, select ―Join a Team.‖ From the drop down box be sure
to select YOUR TEAM NAME as your team.)

Thank you in advance for helping me AND the Lupus Foundation of America! I know we’ll all feel good about helping this important cause!
Most sincerely,
Jane Doe

Dear Friends & Family,

On April 16th, I will be walking in the 5th Annual Walk for Lupus Now to raise funds for the DC/MD/VA Chapter of the Lupus
Foundation of America. Last year’s event raised more than $270,000 which allowed LFA-DC/MD/VA to provide free education programs and
outreach services to improve the quality of lives for people living with lupus while also supporting research. This year we hope to exceed last year, for
the estimated 70,000 people in Virginia, Maryland and D.C. with lupus. My personal goal is to raise at least $2,000. I would also like to have at
least 15 people walk with me. Will you help me reach this goal?

As you know, lupus has affected me and my family, especially in the last year. I was hospitalized in early 2006 with lupus complications, and I was
out of work for three months. There are many more people who are on permanent disability due to this disease. One problem is that no new lupus
medications have been developed in 50 years! The medications we take can have serious and toxic side effects. That's why we need your help in
walking for a cure!

You can donate to my efforts online with a credit card on a secure website. Go to www.lupusdmv.org and click on the link to the Walk website on
the homepage, or go www.dclupuswalk.org. Immediately after making your gift, you will receive an e-mail with tax receipt information. You
can also send a check payable to the LFA-DC/MD/VA to my home address. You can donate directly to LFA-DC/MD/VA, just be sure to
tell them that you are on my team!

Check in begins at 9:00 a.m., and the Walk starts at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 16th at 13th Street NW & Pennsylvania Ave NW,
Washington, DC. This is a fun and festive event for the whole family, and you will be helping to promote awareness for one of America’s most
serious diseases that virtually unknown to the general population! Please spread the word to anyone you believe would support me in the Walk for
Lupus Now. Thanks so much for your support!

Most sincerely,
Jane Doe

Dear Friends,

As you may know, lupus has a personal face for me. My sister, Sue, currently battles this disease on a daily basis. She is one of the strongest people
that I know. She works tirelessly to help people in her chosen profession—nursing. Her kindness and abilities amaze me and to see her struggle some
days to get out of bed remind me that we have so far to go in battling this disease.

In support of my sister, I have decided to walk in the 5TH Annual Walk for Lupus Now to raise funds for the DC/MD/VA Chapter of the
Lupus Foundation of America. Last year’s event raised more than $270,000 which allowed LFA-DC/MD/VA to provide free education
programs and outreach services to improve the quality of lives for people living with lupus while also supporting research. This year we hope to exceed
last year’s total, for the estimated 80,000 people in Virginia, Maryland and D.C. with lupus. My personal goal is to raise at least $2,000. Will
you help me reach this goal?

You can donate to my efforts online with a credit card on a secure website. Go to www.lupusdmv.org and click on the link to the Walk website on
the homepage, or go to www.dclupuswalk.org. Immediately after making your gift, you will receive an e-mail with tax receipt information. You
can also send a check payable to the LFA-DC/MD/VA to my home address. You can donate directly to LFA-DC/MD/VA, just be sure to
tell them that you are on my team!

Your participation helps! Every dollar raised will help thousands of people with lupus in Virginia, Maryland and D.C. Thank you for supporting

Sincerely, Jill Smith

                                                         Corporate Teams
Ask your top ranking official to send an email encouraging participation in the Walk for Lupus Now corporate team. The
principles of team recruitment are no different for company teams than they are for family teams. As a team captain it is your
role to communicate to your walkers, educate them about the LFA-DC/MD/VA and motivate them to become passionate
fundraisers.

       states.

The Lupus Foundation of America, DC/MD/VA Chapter is dedicated to finding the causes of and cure for lupus
and providing support and services to all people affected by lupus.

The Lupus Foundation of America, DC/MD/VA Chapter energetically pursues its mission with objectives designed

           • Heighten public awareness of the causes and consequences of lupus.
           • Advocate increased public and private sector support for biomedical research on lupus.

                                                  LUPUS: THE DISEASE

Lupus is the result of an unbalanced immune system that can be destructive to any organ or tissue in the body,
especially the skin, joints, blood and kidneys. Lupus is unpredictable and potentially fatal, yet no satisfactory treatment
       exists.

Throughout the country, there are nearly 1.5 million people living with lupus, 80,000 in the DC, Maryland and
       Virginia area alone.

It has been over 50 years since the FDA approved a new drug for the treatment of lupus.

More than half of the people with lupus suffer four or more years and visit three or more doctors before receiving a
       correct diagnosis.

While lupus ranges from mild to life threatening, the majority of cases can be controlled with early diagnosis and
proper treatment. However, according to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),
deaths caused by lupus rose by 62% between 1979 and 1998. Among African American women between the ages of
45 and 64, the death rate increased by a staggering 69.7%.

Based on a nationwide poll in April 2005, two out of three Americans know little to nothing about lupus.

Although lupus can occur at any age, and in either sex, it is a disease that discriminates - 90% of people with lupus are
women in the prime of their lives. Lupus is also more prevalent in African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans,
       and Asian Americans.
