                                                                                          each other and may need to be converted. This also means that any applications say for SMS
                                                                                          replies, or results transmitted by SMS need to be developed for a range of operating systems,
                                                                                          thus limiting the educational uses of mobile phones.
                                                                                          File Type. The mobile video uses a 3GP format which Quicktime plays but needs to be
                                                                                          converted to WMV or similar to work on web pages or on a PC. Whatever program is used to
                                                                                          play the video, it can only be played in a window the same as the original size. It can‟t be resized
                                                                                          unless converted which adds greatly to the file‟s size. However, network capability has not quite
                                                                                          kept up and as a result; bandwidth is not yet good enough for mobile online learning. Coverage
                                                                                          and signal problems are still issues in many areas and when travelling this limiting the appeal
                                                                                          and use of mobile devices.

                                                                           A training database exists for Clams and permission has been sought for this to
                                                                           be used for our project. The WSI CMS officer, Meg Javernig is being provided
                                                                           with a PDA by the Institute and Bronwyn and Meg will liaise to provide training
                                                                           for WSI project staff.

                                                                           Bronwyn is also to work on developing a training program to be implemented
                                                                           using Adobe Connect Professional (and recorded) so that other interested
                                                                           Institutes can take part. Both NSI and NCI have expressed interest in the
                                                                           CLAMS on PDA training.

                                                                   Due to the late installation of the software, the Clams on PDA project will need
                                                                   until December 2007 to complete. It is felt that more time is needed to fully
                                                                   trial the software and the use of the PDAs in the field.

                                                                   The question has arisen as to whether the PDAs are robust enough for use on
                                                                   work sites. We have had a casualty which was swept off a desk by a student
                                                                   and this is probably too costly to repair. However, it is significantly less costly
                                                                   than a laptop would be in this instance.

                                                                   The project for development of templates on PDAs is progressing with the
                                                                   appointment of Deborah Pentecost. A meeting has been held with C&J staff
                                                                   and further meetings are planned with Manufacturing at Mt Druitt.

                                                                   To catch up teachers from NSI who are knew to the project, Bob Thurlow from
                                                                   WSI has also provided initial training on the use of PDAs to NSI. Bob’s time was
                                                                   funded by WSI as a good will and cooperative gesture. It is anticipated that
                                                                   future PDA training sessions will be open to both WSI and NSI teachers.

                                                                   The C&J teachers have collected some wonderful photographic evidence of
                                                                   students at work and we hope to have some of this evidence uploaded to a
                                                                   SharePoint site by the end of the TAFE Easter holidays.
