   Greetings from the Pastor
Congratulations! We have reached another milestone. God has kept us and we are
     growing closer to Him.

Just imagine a Bible Believing Congregation lifting up the Master’s Name for more
than 114 years in one community.

It is possible because of your abiding love and commitment. May you always know
     God’s great blessings.

Special welcome to all our guest and returning members.

     Join us in praise!

                             Heartfelt Thanks!

Church, North Augusta, South Carolina, local pastors and churches, ministers,

                                Church History

By the 1890’s Salt Lake City’s small Black population had gained sufficient
enough numbers as to encourage the formation and support of independent institutions
that provided African-Americans with the opportunity to give greater meaning to their
lives. In addressing their spiritual needs, group of Blacks who identified themselves as
the Baptist Prayer Band, met and held worship services in their homes. By 1892, the
“Baptist Prayer Band” was clearly established as “The Calvary Missionary Baptist
Church” and identified as the “little colored house of worship in the alley.”

In June of 1896, Rev. A. E. Reynolds announced in the “Broad Ax” (a Black
newspaper) that a building located in the rear of a white church was available as a place
of worship for Black Baptists. January, 1898, Rev. D. Jones arrived in Salt Lake City
from Topeka, Kansas to pastor Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. He was replaced in
1901 by Rev. J. W. Washington, an energetic person whose leadership was instrumental
in the church’s growth during his tenure. On Sunday, June 29, 1902, the pastor and
members of the congregation gave an afternoon and evening reception at their new chapel
located at 472 East Second South. In 1911, the Eastside Baptist Church site was
purchased by the Calvary congregation from Immanuel Baptist Church. The first
services were held on February 5th at the 679 East Third South location. Rev. Allen
Newman, pastored the church from 1913 to 1915.

In 1921, under the leadership of Rev. George Hart, the Calvary Baptist Church was
incorporated by the State of Utah. Between 1924 and 1954, Calvary had eight pastors.
In 1951, the Articles of Incorporation were revised and approved by the membership.
The Rev. William I. Monroe served as pastor of Calvary from 1954 to 1967. During his
tenure, the church membership made great strides in terms of its membership and
financial condition. On November 3, 1966 the Calvary congregation joyfully marched
from their former worship place at Third South and Seventh East to their new place of
worship at 532 East Seventh South. Special services culminated the activities of this day.
In 1974, Rev. France A. Davis was installed as pastor of Calvary. Pastor Davis has
served the congregation for a longer period than any of his 22 predecessors. During his
tenure, Calvary has continued her ongoing mission. Rev. Davis and the Calvary
congregation dedicated Calvary Towers, a low-income senior citizen housing complex
adjacent to the church at 532 East 7th South on July 30, 1989. Under Rev. Davis’ tenure,
many improvements have been made. The 10/36 Scholarship Plan was initiated in 1992.
The goal is for each member to contribute $10 per month for 36 months to endow a
scholarship account to enable the church to substantially further the education of our
youth by providing financial assistance. Church pews were padded in 1993 to aid in the
comfort of our visitors, friends and members and in 1993 a public address system was
installed complete with speakers, monitors, sound board, double cassette recorder-player
deck and microphones to assist in making the ministry available to all. Pastor Davis with
support of the congregation earned a Masters of Ministry Degree.

                                           -3-
                     Church History (continued)

The membership and visitors continue to increase resulting in seating and
parking problems. In 1994, we added the 8:00 a.m. worship service to alleviate the
problem. However as our members continue to thirst for knowledge about Jesus
Christ, most stay right through to the 11:00 a.m. service. We continue to have a
greater need for additional programs, worship and parking spaces.
In 1995, a new sign was installed to inform all of our worship times. The
kitchen was also remodeled. By the fall of 1995, it was apparent the Church had
outgrown this present facility. December 1995, the membership voted approval to
purchase land and build a larger church facility. Each member was asked to pledge
and give accordingly as the Lord blessed them.
In 1996, God blessed us to secure approximately 2 1/2 acres of land and we
have constructed a 47,000 square feet facility at 1090 South State Street. This more
adequate space for worship, education, community and recreational activities was
occupied and dedicated in November 2001 with only a limited mortgage. We are
enjoying what Dr. Robert Fowler calls a “First Class” facility. Praise God from whom
all blessings flow. With more than 600 members and many more attending, the
congregation continues to meet spiritual needs first and foremost while also helping
people wherever they hurt. Since everybody is welcomed, our congregation is more
and more diverse with a distinct African American style of worship. We lift our voice
in praise and trust God to speak to our lives.
During the past 12 months, we had an exciting youth oriented revival, had a
wonderful early morning Thanksgiving worship service followed by a complete
Thanksgiving Dinner with smoked turkeys and all of the trimmings for 100+, our
reading and tutoring programs continue to grow. We’ve now added a program called
SuccessMaker for those advanced beyond the Waterford Program. We are in the
process of implementing the Waterford Program in private homes. We are offering
Spanish classes once a week with plans for expansion. Calvary was designated as the
location for Utah Reaching Out, which is a state funded program implemented for
assisting our Katrina families. Zions Bank supports two full ride college scholarships
administered by Calvary Baptist Church and our Sound Ministry is now providing
CD’s and DVD’s of each service along with the regular cassettes and VCR tapes. Our
facilities are being better used with plays, scouts, and sports teams. Our numbers
continue to grow as does our spirit and maturity. We continue to baptize new
members and equip our disciples. Join us in moving on up to “Newness of Life” and
read about us on our website (http://www.calvaryslc.com).
Nobody can deny that God has brought us a long ways. Thank you for your
support and participation in the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. While some have
gone from labor to reward, we are truly blessed to be a congregation that is “ALIVE
AND WELL.” GOD BLESS!!!!!!!!!!!

                       In Remembrance

        November 1, 2005 – October, 2006
On this the 114th year Anniversary of Calvary Baptist Church—our thoughts
reminds us as we travel through this often stormy life, confused and lost in our
circumstance, don’t know where to turn, it becomes clear that we need to turn to our
Heavenly Father. He also experienced the most devastating suffering possible, on
our behalf. Total separation from the Father, He stands beside us now and forever,
to comfort us in all our distresses. We remember the members who are no longer
with us and we offer thanks unto God, our Father for their work and fellowship with
us. We bow in humble praise, because we have had the honor and the privilege of
working with each of them. The sky never falls, no matter how hard it rains, God’s
love never fails, regardless of our pain.

                   The Church Triumphant
Let the Church be the Church, Let the People rejoice.
Oh, we’ve settled the question, We’ve made our choice.
Let the anthems ring out, Songs of victory swell
For the Church triumphant is alive and well.

Let the Church be the Church, Let the People rejoice.
Oh, we’ve settled the question, We’ve made our choice.
Let the anthems ring out, Songs of victory swell
For the Church triumphant is alive and well.

Oh, this ship’s been thru battles before
Storms and tempest and rocks on the shore.
Tho’ the hull it may be battered,
Down inside it’s safe & dry
It will carry its cargo to the port in the sky.

Let the Church be the Church, Let the People rejoice.
Oh, we’ve settled the question, We’ve made our choice.
Let the anthems ring out, Songs of victory swell
For the Church triumphant is alive and well.

Is alive, is alive, is alive.
The Church is alive, alive, is alive.
The Church is alive and well, and well, and well.
