DATA COLLECTION: SUSPENDED PARTICULATE MATTER (SPM) - INDIVIDUAL DATA (a separate set of templates available for the a

Introduction
The data collection templates in this file were developed to facilitate collection of information into the EMPODAT – pan-European web-based database of chemical pollution data on emerging
substances in environment and their ecotoxicity (for more information visit the website of the EU FP6 project NORMAN; www.norman-network.net).

The data can also be entered into the database directly or edited via the on-line interface at www.ei.sk/norman_new/empodat (Add new entry or Edit the database). Login and password can be
obtained by registering into the EMPOMAP database as a member of the NORMAN network on the NORMAN website.

Why so much information?

A lot of metadata are required to be able to judge the quality of the reported data and their temporal and spatial distribution. The amount and format of the requested metadata represent a MINIMUM
information needed to ensure compatibility with the future upgrade of WISE (Water Information System for Europe; http://water.europa.eu/) database and other major environmental databases.

Please, beware that ALL OBLIGATORY FIELDS MUST BE FILLED IN otherwise the data will not be accepted by the database at the automatic upload.

Why only the emerging substances from the built-in drop-down list can be reported?
The latest list of emerging substances created within the NORMAN network is in the Worksheet „Emerging Substances 2009 March“ (also available on the NORMAN website). The list is being
upgraded on a regular basis and any suggestion to include NEW SUBSTANCES from the side of the data providers is welcome. Please, contact us with your proposals at projects@ei.sk.

Instructions for filling out data collection templates

How to proceed at filling in the information?
1) Start by filling in the template Data source . Please, note that the information on the data owner will have to be cited by anyone using the data as a precondition for their export from the
database.
2) Continue with filling the site description and concentration data in the appropriate template Analysis... Separate templates for surface/ground/waste water data with different sets of metadata are
available.
3) Finalise the procedure with providing information in the template Analytical method . Concentration data of each substance in each of the matrices reported should be accompanied with a
unique method description. Also, a change of the method over the time should be documented.

Useful hints – how to fill in drop-down list cells?
Cells with drop-down lists can be filled in the following way:
1) Selection from the drop-down list - recommended for (at least) the first data line.
2) The same data can be pasted down from one cell to another (e.g., choose a cell, put the cursor on the right bottom corner of the cell until you can see a thin black cross. Click the left mouse
button and keep it down while moving the mouse downwards; release the mouse button at the last cell to be filled in).
3) The data can be typed in also to cells with drop-down lists but the text must be EXACTLY the same as it is given in the drop-down list, otherwise an Error message occurs (not recommended
without filling in the first data line; cf. 1 above).
3a) If an item has already been used, you may enter the same text in the following rows by typing in first letters of the word - Excel offers you the needed item; it can be accepted by pressing "Enter"
(e.g,. choose "Water" as Sample matrix ; write "W" in the following row, press Enter to choose "Water" again).
Useful hints - how to add rows to the tables?

Each table contains at the end a grey coloured row filled with "x"-s. If you need additional rows to any of the table, please, insert rows right above this grey one the following way:
1.) Leave the last row EMPTY.
2.) Select the whole grey row with "x"-s (or the first cell of it).
3.) Insert ONE row by choosing "Insert" at the heading, and "Rows" from the drop-down list.

4.) Insert any additional rows by pressing "F4" button. (Repeats the last step.) Holding F4 pressed down causes repeated row-insertions (use if you need a lot of additional rows, i.e. more than 20).
5.) Select the cells of the last row with formulas (i.e. the one you left empty at step 1.)
(i.e. Select the first cell of the row, press the left mouse button and keep it down while you move the mouse to the end of the row. Release the mouse button when you selected all the cells in the
row.)
6.) Copy down the selected cells to the created rows. (Instructions are the same as at "How to fill in drop-down list cells, step 2.)

Useful hints - How to delete data?
Please, do not delete whole rows!
Please, do not delete (or change) any of the grey cells.
If you would like to delete data, please use the Delete button at selected CELLS only.

Useful hints - How to re-arrange data
In case you re-arrange data (e.g. alphabetically), please move Serial number with the row.

indicate the depth range (e.g. 1 to 10 for 1 to 10 m range). For depth integrated sampling, indicate the
aggregation method used to calculate the depth-averaged concentration (text).

Enter value of Collection distance in km.
Enter value of Total organic carbon in mg/kg.
Fill in the Serial number of the matching row in the Analytical method worksheet with the method used
to obtain the data. This is particularly important in case more than one method has been used to
analyse one compound in one matrix.
Fill in the Serial number of the matching row in the Data source worksheet with the information on the
provider of the data. This is particularly important in case more organisations/laboratories/authors were
involved in producing the data.
This field is filled in already. Please, move this cell with the Row in case you re-arrange the table.
