Food Packaging & The Environment
As most people don't have a farm or food processing plant in their back yard, there needs to be a way to get food from its point of production
to the people who eat it. In many cases disposable food packaging is a key component that helps this happen. While this disposable
packaging performs many useful functions, such as containing, protecting, and preserving food, it also has a downside in its impacts on the
environment. This programme examines: * the functions of food packaging * the role of recycling in minimising the impact of food packaging
on the environment * the concept of the life cycle of a product * alternatives to disposable food packaging * the packaging covenant * HDPE
plastic milk bottles and liquid paper-board milk cartons as a comparison of two packages for the same product.

Food-Borne Illnesses & Their Prevention
Most of us have suffered the symptoms of a food-borne illness at some time, but probably labelled it a 'bug' or the '24-hour flu'. This
programme takes an in-depth look at the practices that anyone who handles food should follow to prevent the spread of bacteria and to
ensure that the foods we eat are safe and enjoyable. Viewers investigate the causes, symptoms and treatment of food-borne illnesses, with
emphasis firmly focused on prevention. Viewers learn how to recognise the symptoms associated with food-borne illnesses - such as those
caused by Salmonella and E. Coli bacteria - why they make people sick, how long an illness should be expected to last, safe and proper
treatments, and when to pay a visit to the doctor's surgery. Almost all food-borne illnesses can be avoided if those involved in food handling
are educated about the causes and the proper procedures to avoid contamination - and this informative programme can be of great help in
getting this important message across!

Gluten-Free Foods
Have you ever wondered how bread gets its soft springy texture? It’s not the yeast – although that helps. Nor is it the starch, the fat or the
sugar, although they all have a part to play. In fact, it’s a unique protein called gluten. Paul Smith and his company have been developing
gluten-free flour and products for almost ten years and will show viewers the characteristics of gluten, causes and symptoms of coeliac
disease, the effect of bread ingredients on gluten and the production and marketing of gluten-free products.

Bill Nye Series
Bill Nye knows how to provide easy access to hard science. What’s his secret? A fast-paced approach blending humorous hijinks
and hands-on activities with real-life situations, with a focus on illustrating and reinforcing key concepts in a really enjoyable and
totally non-boring way! Bill encourages young students to ask interesting questions... then shows them how to discover
fascinating answers.

Digestion
Bill Nye the Science Guy uses a fast-paced, humorous delivery to explain to viewers how the body's digestive system is like a finely-tuned
machine that turns food into energy... They say that your food is no more inside you than a pencil is inside a donut, when it’s poked through
the hole! Instead of the food going ‘in’ you, food goes ‘through’ you. But, all the energy you get to live and grow comes from your food. All the
chemicals that become your body and brain as you get bigger, come from your food. You get these vital chemicals through a process called
‘digestion.’ Your body breaks food down and grabs all the nutrients you need from it. Then, your body gets rid of what’s left over. Digestion
starts in your mouth. You begin breaking food down by breaking it into pieces with your teeth and jaw muscles. Your saliva (your spit) is full
of chemicals that react with the chemicals in food and make them break apart. Then you swallow. Your food goes down a tube (your
esophagus) to your stomach, where powerful hydrochloric acid breaks it down further into a mushy mash we call chime (kime). From there,
the chime goes into your intestines, and that’s where your body starts to absorb the nutrients you need... The complicated process of
digestion is wonderfully demonstrated by a steam engine that runs on cornflakes!

Bill Nye Series
Nutrition
You are what you eat! That's right - everything from your eyeballs to your elbows is made of food! Bill Nye tells us what kinds of nutrients are
in each bit of grub and which foods are best for healthy bodies... Bill is bustling with activity. He grew up from a baby, for one thing. Now, he
bikes. He can walk really fast. He even dances. What's his secret? Food, food, and more food. It's important to give your body enough food
every day. Food is a body's fuel, and just like a car, your body needs food to make energy and keep going. One cannot live on potato crisps
and soft drinks alone! A balance of food from all the major groups is essential to good health. And don't forget breakfast - watch the
programme to find out how this important meal got its name. All food, whether it's protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, or minerals, is made
of chemicals. When your body gets a hold of these chemicals, it recombines them and makes energy. Different types of food make different
amounts of energy, which are measured in calories. How do scientists figure out the amount of calories in food? In this episode, Bill will
reveal the secrets of the bomb calorimeter - an instrument of food science. If you're hungry for science, the ‘Nutrition’ episode is food for
thought - or thought for food?

This nine-part series uses physiologic animations and illustrations, microscopic imaging, expert commentary, and footage of the
body in motion to provide a thorough overview of the amazing human machine. Marvellously detailed, yet readily understandable.

Digestion and Nutrition
This programme examines the chemical structure of food and the human body’s ability to convert food into fuel and raw materials. Major and
minor nutrients are defined, catabolism and anabolism are contrasted, and the function of the digestive tract at the cellular level is
scrutinized. The sequence of physical and chemical processes that facilitate digestion is also illustrated, spotlighting each constituent
anatomical system: mouth/oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. A segment on healthier eating concludes the
programme.

The Human Body In Action Series
The human body - we all have one, but how much do we really know about it and all of it's intricate systems? This series starts
with an understanding of cells, then looks at each of the body systems in detail, how they function, how they are maintained and
how they interrelate. The overall structure of the human body and basics of good health and nutrition are also covered. Through
extensive microphotography, animations, diagrams, experiments and investigations, students will fully understand how each of
these vital systems operates and interacts.

Digestive & Excretory Systems
'Digestive & Excretory Systems' teaches students that, in order to be of use to our cells, food needs to be broken down and absorbed into the
bloodstream. This is the job of the digestive system, a complex series of tools that includes teeth, saliva, bile, acids and enzymes designed
to reduce nutrients to a form that can be delivered to cells. But, just as rubbish must be taken out at home, waste products and indigestible
materials must be removed from the body. Viewers will learn that this is the role of the excretory system, which includes the liver, lungs,
kidneys and even the skin! The programme features a visit to a kidney specialist and a hands-on activity that tests the digestive action of
acids and enzymes.

Teen Health Series
This series is an invaluable award-winning resource for PSHE and health education classes, dealing with many sensitive, delicate
issues commonly faced by young people. The programmes combine expert interviews with young adult testimonials, discussions
amongst groups of teenagers, and graphics to keep the pace lively and informative. Subjects are presented with an emphasis on
preventive health and awareness, focusing on those who have experienced a difficult situation or medical condition and the
strategies that can be used to overcome or deal with the issues involved.

Eating Disorders
Anorexia Nervosa (self-starvation), Bulimia (a pattern of binge eating and purging), and compulsive overeating are serious eating disorders
that tend to affect young women and to a lesser extent, young men, who may succumb to them as a way to gain control over their bodies,
and consequently, their lives. Becoming isolated and secretive, victims of these disorders often deny their illness and impede attempts at
treatment. As their physical symptoms progress, they may require hospitalisation and a lengthy course of psychotherapy. In this programme,
compelling interviews with several young people who have suffered from Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia, and compulsive overeating provide a
living portrait of these devastating diseases. Experts in the field discuss the treatments available, the causes and symptoms of the diseases,
and techniques for prevention and detection.

Nutrition & Diet
Good nutrition is the foundation for our entire lives. Our food intake and the habits we form as we become responsible for our own diet during
adolescence greatly contribute to the state of our health in later life. It should come as welcome news to teenagers that in a healthy diet,
there is room for ice cream, pizza, even the occasional chocolate bar! Good nutrition doesn't mean a diet limited to specific 'health foods', but
a reasonable, balanced approach to everyday eating. By following the guidelines of the 'food pyramid', eating well becomes a matter of habit.
Coupled with sufficient exercise, good health is likely to follow. In this programme, a registered dietician and a nutritionist work with young
people to explain the principles of good nutrition and to demonstrate good eating habits, from reading product labels to selecting menu items
and preparing food at home.

The Development Of The Dwelling House
Our homes are the result of a continuous development down the ages. In prehistoric times, when man first sought a sheltered place to live,
he made use of natural caves. Where caves could not be found he began to construct shelters, often digging a shallow pit and covering it
with skins or a rough thatch supported by sticks, rather like a crude tent. These first man-made homes have almost entirely disappeared,
except for the shallow circular depressions that can still be found on many of our open downs. However, sufficient remains of early dwelling
have survived, some going back more than two thousand years, to enable us to trace the way in which man's skill in building his home has
developed from very early times down to the present day.

If your students don’t know a seam ripper from a seam gauge, this video is a perfect place to start teaching the skills needed for sewing by
hand. All of the basic tools of the trade are identified, including measuring instruments, tracing wheels and paper, fabric markers, scissors

Bill Nye Series
Bill Nye knows how to provide easy access to hard science. What’s his secret? A fast-paced approach blending humorous hijinks
and hands-on activities with real-life situations, with a focus on illustrating and reinforcing key concepts in a really enjoyable and
totally non-boring way! Bill encourages young students to ask interesting questions... then shows them how to discover
fascinating answers.

Flight
‘Flight’ is the very first Bill Nye the Science Guy programme in the series, and it's where Bill Nye really took off ... literally! Things that fly need
air. Even though we walk through it, breathe it, and sneeze it, air seems to be a whole bunch of nothing. But air is there, and it’s powerful.
Balloons inflate because air presses on the insides and outsides of the balloon. Air pressure in tyres supports the weight of bikes, buses,
trucks, cars, and planes. But air doesn't need to be inside something to exert pressure. Air that moves around pushes, too. What do birds,
planes, kites, Frisbees, and helicopters have in common? They fly because moving air creates lift, or a push up. Aeroplane wings are
shaped to push air down. The momentum of the air going down pushes wings up. Air above the wing gets going faster than the air
underneath. Fast-moving air zips along, without pushing as hard side to side or up and down. The slow air pushes up from below harder than
the fast air pushes down from above ... and you're airborne! Every flying thing, from the tiniest flying insect to the biggest airplane, uses
momentum, and these differences in air pressure, to fly. The pressure force is called the Bernoulli Effect, named after the scientist who
discovered it. Without it, we'd be grounded. With the help of his team of young scientists, and some common household items, Bill Nye
demonstrates how aeroplanes, birds and helicopters create differences in air pressure to develop lift for flying. So don't miss ‘Flight’ - where
Bill Nye takes you up, up, and awaaaay…

Friction
Get a grip - it's Bill Nye’s ‘Friction’ programme, and he doesn't want to rub you up the wrong way! Friction is a force that slows moving things
down and turns the moving energy into heat energy. When two things rub together, like your bike tyres and the road, friction between them
slows you down. There’s also friction in the metal parts of the wheel’s hub – at the centre. There’s even friction between the fibres and rubber
of the tyres themselves as they flex and roll. That's why you eventually stop rolling when you stop pedalling. Rough things make more friction
than smooth things. Rubber shoes on a clean wooden floor create more friction than do hard metal skate blades on smooth ice. Friction also
heats things up. When you rub your hands together, they get warm. You're making enough friction to feel the heat. Friction takes the energy
of your moving hands and turns it into heat energy. Bill illustrates how various types of transport utilise friction, from the use of traction in
trains and the 'roll' of ball bearings in skateboards and cars, to the lack of friction in a hovercraft. A cool home experiment even teaches how
to build a hovercraft in your spare time. Ingrith Deyrup-Olsen, Emeritus Professor of Zoology, University of Washington, (affectionately known
as 'The Slug Lady') shows how slugs' slime helps them stick to, and move across, surfaces. ‘Friction’ with Bill Nye sure is a smooth science
ride…

Pressure
The Science Guy is starting to feel the pressure… When you push something, you're using pressure. Pressure depends on two things - the
power of the push and the area that’s being pushed on. A push on a small area makes more pressure than the same size push on a big
area. Pushing hard on something creates more pressure than a little nudge, naturally. Some things have their own pressure built in. Liquids
and gases always have pressure, and they press in all directions. Think about a balloon. Air inside the balloon pushes on all sides of the
balloon at once - up, down, left, right - in every direction. Liquids like water do the same thing. When you fill a glass with water, gravity pulls it
down making pressure in the glass. The water pushes on the bottom and the sides of the glass. Water pushes up, too - that's why a cork
pushed underwater pops up to the surface. Pressure in liquids and gases comes in handy for stuff like air mattresses, bike tyres, hovercrafts,
and drinking straws. When you suck the air out of your mouth, air pressure above the glass or cup pushes a milkshake into your mouth. Bill
Nye visits Hoover Dam and takes to jack-hammering concrete blocks to explore different types of pressure, whilst special equipment enables
him to scuba dive and explain the effects of pressure under water. In this powerful programme check out fire boats, fancy car hydraulic lifts
and a water jet that pushes water at three times the speed of sound to cut through wood, granite and even titanium. Bill Nye - he's not a
pushy guy, he just wants you to learn about pressure!

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge Collapse
The Tacoma Narrows is the single point in the 20,000 square miles of Puget Sound where the Washington mainland and the Olympic
Peninsula are close. The first Tacoma Narrows Bridge was revolutionary in its design and historic in its collapse. The failure on November 7,
1940 marked the end of a trend in bridge engineering towards a maximum of lightness, grace and flexibility. Since the turn of the century,
suspension bridge construction valued structural grace and slenderness to achieve an artistic appearance; with its shallow stiffening trusses
and slender towers, the bridge across the Narrows was the epitome of artistry in bridge construction. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge was
known for its tendency to sway in windstorms. The shape of the bridge was much like that of an aircraft wing and under windy conditions it
would generate sufficient lift and become unstable. On November 7, 1940 a large windstorm caused severe and catastrophic failure of the
bridge deck. This opportunist filming of the collapse of Tacoma Narrows Bridge clearly illustrates a disadvantageous, resonant torsional
oscillation. Black & White, Silent.

Bill Nye Series
Bill Nye knows how to provide easy access to hard science. What’s his secret? A fast-paced approach blending humorous hijinks
and hands-on activities with real-life situations, with a focus on illustrating and reinforcing key concepts in a really enjoyable and
totally non-boring way! Bill encourages young students to ask interesting questions... then shows them how to discover
fascinating answers.

Architecture
Build up your science with Bill Nye’s ‘Architecture’ programme… Tower blocks, teepees, castles, and ordinary houses - some kind of
planning goes into all buildings, no matter how big or small! Architects are people who design buildings, and the areas around buildings.
Usually architects draw on a computer (using CAD software) or by hand using a big desktop (a drawing board). The plans show the
dimensions of all parts of a building. Architects try to design with the purpose of the building in mind, but even buildings used for the same
thing can look very different. Normally buildings are a lot more than boxes. Architects use different shapes and materials to make buildings
unique. Columns, arches, and different holes (windows and doors) give a building a personality whilst being useful at the same time. Wood
looks cosy, while steel looks cool. Rounded shapes look soft, and angled shapes look hard. Architects use different shapes and materials to
create a feeling or mood whilst keeping the building useful for people. Bill uses the 'Dollhouse of Science' to demonstrate how architects
design buildings, and travels to Japan to learn how pagodas are built to withstand earthquakes. Be constructive - watch the ‘Architecture’
episode!

Bill Nye Series
Structure
Are you tense? Need some structure to your life? Then tune in to Bill Nye the Science Guy as he explains the science of structures… All
structures give support or create a shape. You can find structures everywhere. Bridges, buildings, chairs, shoes, plants, spiderwebs, tables,
and even your own body are all structures. A structure's shape, size, and what it's made of depend on what the structure does and how
strong it needs to be. When structures give support, they either experience a pull (tension) or a push (compression). Structures in tension,
such as ropes, cables, or balloons are made from stuff that is good at pulling. The materials in tension are usually thin. Structures under
compression, such as elephant legs and building supports, are made from hard stiff stuff. Compared to structures under tension, structures
under compression are much thicker. When it comes to structures, form (the size and shape) depends on function (what it does). From the
'Bungee Zone' in British Columbia to New York Harbour's Verrazano Narrows Bridge (one of the longest suspension bridges in the world),
Bill - our daredevil host - goes to any length to prove the structural principles of tension and compression!

Bill Nye Series
Bill Nye knows how to provide easy access to hard science. What’s his secret? A fast-paced approach blending humorous hijinks
and hands-on activities with real-life situations, with a focus on illustrating and reinforcing key concepts in a really enjoyable and
totally non-boring way! Bill encourages young students to ask interesting questions... then shows them how to discover
